If you want to hear some of my original music you can go here. I need to get back to recording. I did this in my bedroom, all instrument and vocal i did myself in one or two takes. It's really just sketches of song. Todd

'someone's dancing on the box, a former mp, but nobody's watching' - that MP was Anne Widdecombe, who was on the BBC show 'strictly come dancing' at the time he wrote this song. 'Chinless prefect gone godzilla' - that was none other than David Cameron.

omg that's bloody perfect, I didn't know that line was about a specific person but it fits Cameron so well

This track is from Elbow’s ‘The Take Off and Landing of Everything’ album - not just a single as referenced.

This song is a stunning piece of writing. The first half is supposed to jar, to further accentuate the balm of the second half. It’s all about the juxtaposition of a man at the cross roads in his life, choosing between hedonism or homelife, (“I’m having a baby, second thoughts - scotch”). The musical harshness of the first half, with its bipolar vocals and cast of misfits has an alluring and yet sinister air (“it’s a lethal ballet”). The gentleness of the second half documents the acknowledgment of the harm that this life can cause and yet it still holds its charms, “mother, forgive me, I still want a bottle of good Irish whiskey and a bundle of smokes in my grave”. It also discusses the fear of what is left of the man - as a person and an artist - once all the extraneous stimulants are gone (“if I stopped… would the drivel make scribble, make sense and then song?”) and besides, is there not benefit in being able to throw caution to the wind now and again (“perverse as it may sound I sometimes believe, a tip to my lips, just reminds me to breathe”)? Ultimately though for all the superficial pleasures, love wins the day and Garvey uses the most exquisite poetry to illustrate the acceptance of the inevitable, “but there isn’t words yet for the comfort I get from the gentle lunette at the top of the nape of the neck I awake to”. Such a gorgeous, clever slice of music.

Although you missed the best line in the entire piece: if i stopped would the bus ever come? As a former smoker, I know for a fact that buses only turned up when I just lit a cig.

Interesting choice for a reaction Todd. You really are spoilt for choice with Elbow, they are renowned for stunning opening tracks to their albums, Guy Garvey is one of Britain's top lyricists working today and should give you plenty of material for future reactions. Enjoyed listening to your comments.
