  • Lionel first introduced the Torpedo in 1936 and cataloged the 298W outfit in both 1936 & 1937. The catalog depicted the engine & tender as bronze-black in color but made as gun metal gray. Lionel cataloged the Torpedo set again in 1938, but this time as outfit #196W. Lionel introduced the then new in 1938 "Electric remote control couplers". This changed the tender and passenger car numbers to 2265W, 2602, 2600, and 2601.

There are not a lot of newer toys let alone that are 86 years old that perform as well with such a simple construction.😊😊

Beautiful job Al! For something that old and still operating is wonderful. To me, this set looks fantastic. I always liked the Torpedo design. It was the era of that art deco and streamlined look back in the day. I’m honored to own this piece myself that was originally my uncle’s. I hope you showcase this set again on your channel. Tom

I will showcase it again at some point. I still have to get 3 grab bars for the passenger cars and figure out if there is a dry or bad wheel bearing.

@@alsvintagetoytrains7042 That would make for a great continuing series with this set, especially diagnosing and fixing the wheel bearing issue on the passenger car(s). I would entertain seeing that.

I got set#1073 from 1939. I need to feature it on my channel soon. It is a real good running locomotive. It’s my only pre war Lionel set in my collection. I enjoyed your video.

Nice, sounds like a bearing needs lube or replacing.

Yes, I believe it is a bearing. It was well oiled prior to running, but will have to pull the wheels to better see what is going on there.

I wonder if the separate sale locomotive you pointed out was a sales gimmick. After seeing the set was only about a dollar more. It might make you think the set is such a good deal I better rush and buy that set.
