Fascinating. My GP drained mine about 15 years ago and removed 2 syringes of fluid. He was a surprised how much he removed but it gave me a lot of relief at the time.
I've had recurring bakers cyst for decades and have never had any fluid removed . I've been told to just deal w it bc I'm prone to them . They can be painful !
A couple of the Orthos out here won't do anything about. They say it's to technical or high risk, something to that affect. That's coming from the group that did 2 meniscus tears on my knees. Mine is really starting to bother me. I've had it for at least 5+ years.
@scott that isn't too surprising, unfortunately. For that reason, it's probably time to find a specialist who feels confident in performing such technical procedures. Feel free to call my office and schedule an appointment. I'm sure I can provide different options than the limited ones you've been given so far.
I went to a vein specialist for a test , while I was there she found the bakers cyst on the back of my knee and she sent the information to my doctor. The doctor told me to make an app for a follow up with my doctor which I did. My doctors only response was they don’t do anything for bakers cysts. I was confused by her comment. I was scheduled to see another doctor and the cyst burst one week prior to the app. My leg felt very tight and had extreme bruising . That summer my friend had one Burst and was rushed into surgery. What is your opinion on not treating Bakers cysts ?
Thanks for the video!! I go see my orthopedic doctor today for a follow up of my MRI. Hopefully this is a options for my Baker's Cyst. Update tore my meniscus and had arthroscopic surgery on it.
Generally, a Baker's Cyst forms when there is an injury or dysfunction in the joint. If you tore your meniscus, there was likely already some dysfunction in the knee which made your knee more susceptible to the injury. Dysfunction could be, for example, laxity in the joint, meaning the ligaments, muscles, tendons, etc. that hold the knee together are a bit weakened and/or loose. Sometimes we can reduce pain and improve function as well or better than a surgery could with regenerative therapies such as PRP or stem cell therapy from bone marrow concentrate. It may be beneficial to get a second opinion from an interventional orthopedics doctor near you to see if you might be able to avoid surgery.
I had a bakers cyst burst behind my left knee, it was excruciating, I couldn't even touch my foot to the ground! Huge bruising down my calf, then 2 weeks later it burst again!
I have a large protruding lump approximately 3" in diameter on the left side of my right kneecap. It's soft and if it press on it its painful. Is this a bakers cyst?
Can't really tell without seeing it in person. But if it's very soft and fluid like, it could be increased joint fluid. Often the knee joint can accumulate a lot of fluid if it's inflamed and you can see it bulge on the sides of the knee or if someone is unfortunate enough it flows into a baker's cyst. Ultrasound in office would quickly show if it's fluid from the knee.
I have a repair surgery meniscus one month,my Dr. Don't want to deal with my cysts, one reason why I have my surgery was my cysts... He told me they will despair by their self, is true? Thank you Dr. For be helpful and kind🥺💖
@gabriela freedland, Baker's Cysts tend to come back if the underlying dysfunction that caused the cyst is not addressed. In many cases a meniscus tear occurs because there is an underlying stability issue in the knee joint, so simply cleaning up a meniscus tear with surgery may not make the joint function better in the end, thus the cyst could come back, as well as future OA. I recommend you find an Interventional Orthopedics trained specialist locally to get second opinion before moving surgery if you can. You can also consult with me via telemed using this link: iowmed.com/booking/

If you have a Baker's Cyst, you'd be more comfortable right after an aspiration like this, but the effects may be temporary if you do not address the underlying cause. So yes, technically you could go right back to sprinting if that's normal activity for you and it doesn't hurt. BUT I would tell you to come back very soon for a treatment of PRP or Prolotherapy which requires some downtime to address the underlying cause of the formation of the cyst, otherwise, it's extremely likely to just come back.
Interventional Orthopedics of Washington I’m dealing with a reoccurring baker cyst right now. My knee has lots of issues. I’m early 40’s played high school and college basketball. Was 275 6,5 back then. Starting to have heel pain near inside of foot now. Also swelling down calf and Achilles area. Knee issues left untreated like mine are no joke. I avoid stairs at all costs. Please people, get the treatment when the doctor says. Avoid problems down the road.

How much is the total treatment on the day the patient was there? Draining the cyst and doing a PRP treatment? Insurance usually does not cover it? What is an average amount of yearly treatments? I’m looking to have this done for my mother. She has good insurance but I’m guessing this is not covered. Thank you
@ross redman correct, insurance does not usually cover these types of procedures and many doctors won't aspirate baker's cysts, to begin with. All of our treatments are customized to the patient's pathology and goals after an in-depth new patient evaluation. What state/city is your mother located in? Happy to help give you some pointers on how to select a doctor to do this for her locally if she's not near Bellevue, Washington where my clinic is located. A good place to start is to look for an MD or DO with formal training in "Interventional Orthopedics".
I need this so bad. My sports Med Dr. will not perform this procedure on me. Stating it is risk of infection and it will return back very quickly. She told me to just go to physical therapy. I am in soooo much pain!!!
@sha lewis where are you located? What I do is less common and many of my patients travel in from out of state for treatment. I'd be happy to consult with you over the phone to see if that's a possibility for you. Please call our office at 425-326-1665.
Get a second advice. I was the same too. My doctor keeps giving me inflammation taplet. Now it's getting worse. I went to see different doctor. He told me this baker cyst needs to come out. So im relief now. But he did say it may come back if knee is untreated.
Just numbing at the site. If you listen closely you can hear this patient talking to me during the procedure stating that he's having no pain. Sedation is not required for this procedure and it can be done quickly in our office with little downtime afterward. If a patient requests it though, conscious sedation is available.

I thought you have to get the sack out too or it will keep coming back! Is that true or not? Maybe it is another kind of cyst that the sack has to come out. I know a lipoma the sack has to come out for sure when the contents are drained.
My knee dr won’t do anything for my bakers cyst, he said I have to wait for it to go away on its own. Other than walking w a walker or cane to t kitchen & bathroom i a have been in bed for 2 months now
Are you open to a 2nd opinion? Traditionally trained doctors such as orthopedic surgeons or sport medicine doctors may approach this problem much differently than someone with my background and training. If you're in a city near Seattle, call my office at 425-326-1665 and we'll be happy to share some more information. Or, seek out a doctor near you on this list: interventionalorthobiologics.org/find-iof-members/
@hira malik, you can't remove a Baker's Cyst that way because it is fluid-filled by nature, not a solid mass. The best way to try to keep it from returning is to improve the overall function of the knee, which is what we do with regenerative therapies at my office.
The numbing usually lasts a few hours and I do it very comprehensively so that the patient feels as little discomfort as possible while receiving the injections.
that is correct if only the aspiration is performed. If you just drain it, it will very likely come back. If a proper treatment is performed in conjunction, however, then the cyst does have a chance of not returning.
