    Check out the in-depth mic comparison video! It’s 54 minutes long and compares the PodMic USB to 26 other microphones with a male and female voice in each example: th-cam.com/video/QkxgSxBv6gQ/w-d-xo.html

      Hey Tom great video, anychance youve heard if Rode or another brand has made the good looking Rode popfilter available separately yet? The one that is included in the USB version.

    Woah - I had no idea that the Rode software will handle multiple USB mics on one computer! I'm too far down other 'Rodes' 😉 at this point, but that's some incredibly useful functionality (and information) right there.

    I can understand why professionals consider these multifunctional mics to be expensive and unnecessary, when they already have a mixer and post production tools. For those of us who don't have a mixer, who want a mic that will work with both XLR and USB, this fits a clear niche. After looking at the price of the MV7, I really wanted to like this microphone. But the sound without the EQ is harsh and thin, very hard to listen to.

    At this point your videos are addicting I watched this one on accident and couldn’t stop until it was over lol. I think it’s a combination of the colors you chose for you colorful set. I wish the price was more competitive. Hard to know what the right price should be though. I am a Sennheiser profile owner and I am very happy with it. So it would have to be pretty close for me to want to "sidegrade". The combo XLR option and software I can say would add to the price a little. How about... 160? Come on, RODE!

    I commented about it under one of your videos around a year ago, but this seems a fitting moment to do it again: FDUCE SL-40. Same functionality as PodMic USB at a *third* of the price ($60 on Amazon when i'm commenting). Solid metal build, looks great, no software. USB-C, 3.5mm and XLR out. Decent sound (to my ear). It's worth getting for a budget mic comparison. When comparable mics are 200-250 dollars it's odd not to hear it mentioned more.

    • @CARfariPark
      @CARfariPark 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I recently mentioned the SL-40 on one of Tom's livestreams. I bought 2 XLR versions just so I could have some inexpensive reasonable sounding mics for some client podcasts. Now that may sound counterintuitive but I wanted to be able to have some well made, lightweight gear that could be chucked in a bag, and carried on trains & planes, without risking damaging my SM7Bs or Procasters. Having recorded 4 casts using the SL40s, I love how they sound, with a bit of EQ via my Rodecaster they really punch above their weight, HOWEVER.... the biggest flaws in the SL-40 are now apparent after many hours of use.... handling noise is awful, they pick up everything - footsteps, desk noise, buttons on jackets - far too much! Secondly, the cardioid rejection is very unpredictable. They behave like a heavy noise gate has been applied. Sometimes they pick up cleanly, then on other occasions they simply fade out the vocal, it's not a fault as I have 2 mics and they both behave in the same way. All said and done, for a solo gig or personal hobby, the budget SL-40s are hard to beat, but the 'professional' qualities seen in mics like the SM7B or Procaster are worth the money, in the time saved in post-production.

    I think from what I'm hearing from the PodMic USB, I would say it sounds good and it's even got an Equalizer app for it too so I can set what ever I like. 😊
    And I could set a reverb to it too for the wider stereo audio. 😁

    Very eager to try the new Rode Podmic USB! I find the Shure MV7 way too bright and have to boost the low mids and cut the highs to work (more effectively) with my baritone voice. Granted, I use Audacity, so that could be part of the problem. Yours sounded great by comparison, The Samson Q9U is a warmer sounding mic even without any processing,

    Being semi-retired, I just watch for fun. I had the original but the Procaster is yes more expensive but a much better mic. As a Consultant I have a case with 5 mic's so far one has always been the right one for the talent (The Pod-Mic isn't in the case) It has a purpose it a reasonably good intro mic. If your getting into Podcasting, pick up two with the Rodecaster and your set. Being old I only have one USB Mic for last minutes voiceover/correction (Opt-Cmd-8 in FinalCut) that would happen in editing (It the Earthworks Icon mini). I see the benefit of a combo Mic but you only need one. What Rode is doing is with it virual rodecaster and the USB mic may fit the kids today but I need physical knobs and sliders! To OLD to change...LOL

    I love the q9u but the handling sound made me get the podmic usb instead but i dont know if I like how it sounds on my voice. The sm7b is my favorite but spending that much on a mic is kind of steep right now. I been messing with the settings and im somewhat satisfied with how the podmic sounds for my voice, like you were saying if it was like 20-30 dollars cheaper I don't think I would be 2nd guessing myself so much to be honest.

    Out of curiosity, If you were to choose between the: USB Podmic vs Podmic & Scarlett solo, which do you think would be the better pick for streaming?

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would choose the PodMic USB. The Scarlett Solo doesn't have the best preamps, so you might find yourself also needing a booster. Plus the overall sound quality and EQ options via Rode Central are better with the PodMic USB 👍

  • @dinkinganddriving
    @dinkinganddriving ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Tom, love the channel and watch all of your videos... I am going to be a bit critical on this on as I think you missed the mark on the most important part of this comparison. The new addition to this mic was its usb capabilities... but you recorded everything from this new mic in XLR and then compared it to other mics and switched between xlr and usb depending on which mic it was. So we actually have no reference to how this mic sounds using USB. The other funny part is that you run it through the rode caster... the majority of people who buy a USB mic (myself included) choose that over XLR to simplify their set up. They run it directly into their computer instead of using a peripheral... Once again you did not demonstrate that with this mic or how it would sound. So in reality you just compared the original XLR podmic to a bunch of other mics. So now I walk away from this video not actually knowing anything about the usb capabilities of this mic, which is the entire reason it costs $100 more than the original podmic.

  • @RyaStream
    @RyaStream ปีที่แล้ว

    ill be honest the rodecaster duo processing is pretty bad in my opinion. i had it for a little while and ended up returning it. it somehow made my ElectroVoice RE20 sound awful. very thin and tinny sound which we all know is the opposite of what an RE20 does. and a very weak 3 band eq (in my opinion not nearly enough for vocals) which could not fix it. Went back to the GoXLR and it sounds great again. i just mentioned it because when you did the Shure Preset it sounded terrible. Rode stuff is so cool except for the sound. which is the most important thing. Really appreciate all your helpful videos though! You do a great job at comparing what's important!

  • @DKTD23
    @DKTD23 ปีที่แล้ว

    You're correct that the PodMic was intentionally tuned to be more of a mic that Rode leaves to your vices on how you want to EQ your sound. I'm not sure if it's still produced, but Rode has a Procaster USB model in their lineup, albeit no DSP I don't think. Who makes the colored earpads? Thx for the review!

If you can’t afford the RodeCaster then I’d say to future proof yourself and but an original PodMic and a used or new budget zoom recorder like the U-22 and then you already have an XLR “interface” to use with better mics later on. Just my 2 cents.

    Do we need a cloud lifter with this mic and the rcp 1?

      Maybe- I would try it first without it and then add one if needed.

    I just got the podmic but am getting weird popping/static noise in my headphones . the podmic is connected directly to the PC via USB-C. I do have Rode Unify running to split the channels etc for music, game, system etc. but I'm not sure where the static/popping noise is coming from. It happens when watching videos, playing games etc. Really annoying and hard to diagnose. Any help?

    Which is the best USB Mic out of Rodepod Mic USB vs Rode XCM 50 vs Sennheiser USB Profile Mic and have you done a comparison of all 3 anywhere? Thanks in advance

      Rode sent it over since they somehow managed to deduce what my favorite color is (I try to be VERY subtle about it). 😁

      Rode sent these ones, but I'm hoping that means they'll be releasing them for sale soon. I'd love to buy a bunch of other colors, and they're really easy to swap out.

      @@tombuckthanks for the reply Tom that sounds awesome I really hope they have them in stock soon. I also hope they make a revision of the NTH 100 and combine metal fitlocks with the metal headphone body that way the fitlock won't keep breaking apart😔

    But its expensive. I'd rather prefer recording my voice through mobile and give it to Zarific to ensure mic quality audio and save money

    The huge difference that I think you missed with the pricing is with the XLR only mic thats $99 is there you'll need to get a podcaster style device too which is another $200- $900
    Great video tho

    Call me crazy but i think i like the sound of the unprocessed Podmic XLR wih the windscreen best because it does not have the overwhelming boomieness that gets old after 5min of listening to it. Generally I dont get why any bass needs to be added to recorded vocals. If Id listen to a 2h podcast with 3 voices booming all over the place id just dismiss it as a badly tuned set of mics and turn the podcast off.

    Do you have a USB C SETUP for sound?
    I have only found videos where they only use XLR audio interface setups ect.
    What is the difference?
    Any help would be appreciated, cheers.
