Yep, I'm definitely seeing higher production in the sunny locations, or at least where the plants get a partial day of good sunlight exposure. One of the edge species! Keep that soil covered and relatively moist during the growing season with lots of moisture retaining organic material. The less sand, the better! Another thing to keep in mind... Turmeric of various species (Curcuma spp) can cross pollinate easily once those beautiful flowers (bees love the flowers!) are exposed, creating some hybridized results. If you want to keep your turmeric true to their type, separating species by a good distance, or covering flowers may be necessary!
Thank you for this! I was thinking about putting 2 dif ones together. It won’t cross with a ginger will it? I have shell ginger and something else near the turmeric. 😬
Looks great! I've started growing some turmeric in sunken pots... The dogs love lying on the soft leaves, so I had to make it less comfortable for them. Can't wait to amp up my supply!
Tumeric as a supplement, needs to be taken in liquid format, not dry powder capsules. Eating it raw is best, but you do have to eat a lot to get the same effect from liquid concentrate form.
Are you growing the black/blue turmeric? I have a bumper crop this year and love the beautiful blue color, but am not sure how to use the rhizomes. I understand that it is stronger than the orange but don’t know if it has the same medicinal properties, contains the same curcumin, and can be used in cooking. Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Oh, by the way, after watching your video on roselle , I got some seeds and my plants are growing like crazy. I can hardly wait to be able to harvest some of the calyx and make some of the drink.
I use turmeric/black seed oil daily, and I do not have arthritis. The thing that took my 7 year old injury knee pain away was Lifepro Rumblex 4D vibration platform. I had relief after two weeks of using platform and have had no pain in the past year. Look into it.
I am starting to plant turmeric in containers (subtropical climate here) but I was wondering what would be the optimized size to have a maximum yield? Thanks!
Loved the three pronunciations, but you pronounce it perfectly! I have heard some kill it, but I suppose its about where you live! Turmeric has so many great medicinal properties and such a great spice! Great video Pete, as always! Blessings!
I have a couple of questions my neighbor just gave me one in a pot when I harvest it where and how do I store it in the house and do different colors of the flowers make a difference
Excellent information! I love these videos. I would love to see more "how to grow your own medicine" and what the plants are good for. Did you wife start her medicinal youtube channel yet or are you guys doing it together on this channel? I would love to learn more about medicinal plants, etc. Thanks for all the hard word you put into making these videos, they are much appreciated!
Yes, although the plant is still dormant. The rhizomes are in the soil and will re generate new growth any day now. Here are all of our plants available at our Retail Nursery. www.greendreamsfl.com/_files/ugd/041a87_7e1013a2c9e54fa1840983c0e01ff08f.pdf
Thank you Pete for your answer. I guess that I will do as you did. I will buy the plant and take it from there. You said that you have several varieties. Wich one would you recommend ? The orange color one? I am not local, but if you can send it by UPS, it would be great. Just let me know the cost. Tanks again Pete.
I just did about 12 - 6 inches of wood chips a few months ago so I will try again. We have irregular rain usually can depend on July and August rains and maybe some winter rains. Totals usually are less than 8 inches of rain per year. I started a couple of mangoes and am experimenting with food forest Permaculture style. I Know I am getting straight experienced info from you Pete.
lennyharp. I grew mine in a kiddy pool this year with holes punched 1" above the bottom, a lot of chips, mixed with green mulch leaves and some spagnum peat moss. Add a couple of worms, plant the turmeric and sit back.
Loucile Hall amazon and etsy generally have things like that for sale. maybe try permies.com for an exchange if you've got something gone to seed. hope this helps. - jacob
I find my harvest are best second year. Most curcuma for me seems to produce mass quantities first year but for turmeric I find waiting that second year gives me 5 to 10 times more than harvesting first year. I thought it would grow like other curcuma but it doesn't seem to. I have always found the curcuma family to perform better with more sun. I am noticing now that I never paid attention to before is that all my curcuma are going dormant as they always do but the turmeric is still green.
Oh interesting. I’m near Houston and for me it’s the opposite. My 2 different turmerics all turned brown but the ginger hasn’t changed. I was also really bummed to realize they both prefer some sun. Seemed like I read they loved shade so now I have to move some things around. 😩
@@lauranilsen8988 Not sure which plants you have exactly but many regular ginger types aren't deciduous like curcumas. In my experience I don't think I have yet seen a non deciduous curcuma.
@@BryceGarling ah ok. My shell ginger did make it through a hard freeze (covered). I have a variegated turmeric that I just harvested and the root is white. 😳 Hopefully my other turmeric is orange. 😬 my 2 gingers didn’t produce much at all. I think they get too much shade. At least they look pretty.🤷🏻♀️
In Malaysia we use the leaves too. They add a lovely aroma to meat dishes, grilled fish and coconut curries.
Do you just cook it like regular green leaf veggies?
@@SaphsContainerGarden Just take 1 or two leaves to add unique taste to curry-kind of dishes.
@@letmetalk2240 Thank you!
@@SaphsContainerGarden We usually use it for our rendang dishes.
I have some coming back after 3 years in a pot! I put it in the garage for the winter~
Thanks! I take this everyday for chronic pain, $46 per bottle! I had no idea this would grow in FL, I will be adding this to my mini forest!
Michael Lucero me too! The supplements are normally way more concentrated and have other ingredients that help absorption like black pepper.
I made a joint formula of tumeric, moringa and cissus blended into a powder.

It's exciting to think turmeric is so easy to grow! I'll have to try it. Thanks.
You pick all ginger/turmeric in fall and return outside in the spring? Store at room temp?
Nice capsuls
You should try the blue one. It has the highest curcumin amongst all turmeric species. Lots of benefits yet to be discovered on this blue species.

it’s beautiful also for indoor plant
Hi, I am getting ready to plant some tumeric so that I can use them in my family's diet. Thank you for this information.
Awesome! Glad to share
Thanks for this video.
On a side note, check out Knees Over Toes for your knees.🙏
Tumeric, ginger and glucosamine everyday!! Love it beautiful view llooks awesome. Great job.
If you use it for a supplement, they say to mix it with black pepper to make it more effective....that’s what I have heard, may or not be correct.😃🌈🤙
I heard that too. Especially helpful for asthma prevention, and to help people with lung issues

i brought my tumeric starters from a dude in india. so far the plants are doing good
You got any on the market yet?

Do you ever grow finger ginger??
Hello Pete. I just wonder if you have some Turmeric roots for planting for sale. I want to grow some on my garden. Thanks.
Miguel Navarro no I’m sorry we only sell the plants. We have probably 8 different rare varieties in stock if you’re local.

should be able to grow there in ghana.
Can you start turmeric in a glass of water till it roots?
No, just plant it right away into soil
Great videos man! I see big things for your TH-cam future :) keep em coming.
How do you prepare raw tumeric to use medicinally?
Pete do you have white tumeric for sale?
Yes, we do have the white variety.
I have tried turmeric and ginger in the Arizona desert where it seems to be too dry air to grow. Any ideas?

Does it like wet soil?
Pattie Kronen it can handle wet soils and production seems to be better in wet conditions.
Pete Kanaris GreenDreamsFL Thanks. I have the perfect spot now.
Such beautiful plants! ☮️❤️💥🌈🌎😇😇😇😇
You don’t have to dig them up when it gets cold. They will come back on their own where you’re at anyway
