- Compact electric rocketship takes on the definitive hot hatch 👉 Full Review:
It’s a sign of how fast the car landscape is changing that we’ve gathered MG and Volkswagen together for a head-to-head hot hatch stoush.
The Mk8 VW Golf GTI represents the petrol-powered old guard, if you like, generating 180kW/370Nm from its 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine.
EVs represent new opportunities, however, including unprecedented power and performance, and the MG4 XPOWER’s twin-motor electric drivetrain produces a crazy 320kW/600Nm.
But power isn’t everything though, so to see if MG’s new weapon can best one of the most iconic hot hatches in history - for around the same money - check out our comparison video.

The two star buttons on the steering wheel can be set to do one of several different things; change the Drive Mode, change the Brake Regen Strength, open the 360 Camera view or to access the A/C controls via the joystick on the steering wheel.
I thought MG4 X power should at least be compared to Golf R. To some standard the GTI is just a warm hatch not a hot one.
Another great review!
A Golf GTI any time. 🚘
I like the product from the PRC, my TV, phone and so much more has been so reliable. But would test both as homework pays off😅.
I've had a mk8 GTi (it's even white) for the last three years and I'm considering the Xpower (amongst others) to replace it.
The GTi drives beautifully but has been difficult to live with, the car's software is woeful and the driver assists are no better. I've had many occasions where my (UK) car suddenly thinks it's back in Germany and starts reading the roadsigns in KPH instead of MPH. When the car suddenly wants to brake you down from 70 to 44 MPH (70 KPH) on a motorway without warning, things get a little spicy. The adaptive cruise will also try to prevent me from passing on the right, the satnav will often simply give up and the front and rear parking sensors will only work when they feel like. If the adaptive cruise decides not to work, and this has happened, you are left with no cruise control at all, not even passive.
As I type this, the front/rear sensors are still not working and I have an amber warning light on the dash because the gear selector has yet another 'problem' (I've been ignoring it because I'm sick to death of taking it back to VW). The heater/AC will only blow at full heat or full cold, and no matter how you adjust the levels on the sound system it always defaults back to the presets when you switch the ignition off. Oh, and the surround speaker in the dashboard is sometimes the only one that produces any sound.
The car has also developed a creak in the front suspension after two and a half years and 35,000 miles. I was pretty excited to get this car at first but to be honest, I'll be glad when it's gone.
Haha I feel your pain, I’ve got mk8 r line and it is the best quality and luxury feel car and yet the most awful reliability wise car I have ever owned! I’ve owned numerous ford focuses, hondas, holdens which had nowhere near the amount of issues that my vw has.
In my country the xpower cost (the equivalent of) AUD$ 51.8k, and the golf GTI costs AUD$ 76k. Think its a good bargain?
A strange comparison an Electric XPower vs a Golf GTI ICE If you bought the Xpower it is for the speed or else you would go for the MG4 much cheaper than golf but with similar acceleration.
It's more about how MG's interpretation of a hot hatch compares with a traditional one of the same money
' This is a very, very good car ' wonder if he would say this 5 years later when out of warranty ?
Know where you're coming from, but funnily enough one of the videographers that shot this had a lovely 2015 MK7 GTI manual that was tip top
VW all the way 👍
Please don’t and I’m talking from personal experience, just want to save you the headache 😂
I’ve owned several Vw and more recently an mg. No car is perfect but I’d take any vow over the terrible mg.
Mismatch - should Golf R comparison.
On AWD perhaps, but price would then be vastly different
Gippsland gets a workout from the motoring jounalists😅.
Don't you forget .. the golf GTI cost twiz the mg4 xpower
Not in Australia, the Golf is the cheaper car
The GTI is only $1172 cheaper in Vic according to drive away calculators. Add the luxury pack in the GTI to get electric / heated seats etc and you have to fork out another 4k!
The fact Australia is so far behind the adoption curve has me wondering how hard the EV wave will hit when it finally lands on our shores. In 3 years time that GTI will be almost worthless as people are scrambling to get EVs. By 2030 I can easily imagine single digit new car ICE sales. EVs with the performance of the MG4 will be 30K.
Not really..evs are slowing down..what about your cellphone..after 1 year use how much will you sell it? Right, Any battery vehicle will be worthless faster than an ICE car.
@@ruggieromarquez7705 - All vehicles ICE and lesser so EVs depreciate spectacularly. No new car is in any way a good investment. For sure the pace at which EV Battery technology will come to market over the next 5 years will certainly hit EVs hard. But, an old EV is going to always be a better buy than an old ICE vehicle and old ICE Vehicles will be viewed like smoking is in a restaurant soon.
Do not project the current EV issues with anything other than price/performance/supply issues + artificially created FUD by incumbents.
My point is that the disruption is already under way and irreversable. EVs will be far cheaper than ICE within 5 years and they will be ubiquitous. For small vehicle transport, there is absolutely no way ICE will even be a viable consumer choice by 2030. It will probably be that way by 2025-26.
If MG wanted to, that MG4 would be 40K here, right now. They won't do this until they have to, but when the time is right, it will happen.
Getting back to your phone analogy, how long did it take smartphones to completely disrupt the previous generation? 6 years.
Buy a Hyundai i30 N instead as it’s better than the GTI and costs less
Please name the supercar that runs 3.8 to 100kph and 12-12.3 seconds over 400 meters.
Granted today those numbers would be a little off the pace but they were absolutely top-class supercar numbers not long ago. And the MG will dip into the 11s
@@carsales show me an 11?
that's right you can't.
@@carsales Seriously. Back up you statement. a 12 second quarter wouldn't trouble a M3 xdrive. Click bait, that's all it is.
😂 bro relax
Are you crazy for asking that question!!! That VW is a solid piece of real experience and true handling. Another silly and dumb comparison.
MG is a one trick pony
how many of these electric cars have batteries that catch on fire. TH-cam is full of chinese cars exploding.
Petrol cars are twenty times more likely to catch on fire. The media only sensationalises EV fires as click bait. Oil companies sponsor the media.
