- Let's go on a shell tour! ⛵️ As we explore the sandbar at Dickman's Point, we come across some AH-MAZING finds including one I've never seen - a live Limpet! COOL!! This is such a shelltastic island, known for sand dollars, so I'll give you my tips for finding them and getting them home safe and sound! Happy Shelling!

That was awesome! I could dig through those piles all day too and what awesome treasures all over the beech. I love the feathers, driftwood and all the other vegetation from the sea scattered with the shells...so fun and pretty!

Yes, they do! I've seen them at our local fish store, but they aren't common to see in the wild. It's cute to see them suctioned onto the glass on the tanks!

Are you referring to the one at 5:44? If so that’s an Angle Wing (not a false 🙂) I do have an episode where I show the difference between the two. I don’t recall the exact episode but I will try to look it up for you!

I don't pick up every single shell on the beach, I'd be there all day! There are plenty of shells, and it's nice to leave shells for other shellers to find! 💜
What can you put on shells to harden the shell for less breaks
Hi Dianne, your shells shouldn't need hardener, they are pretty hard as is - the "fragile" shells you'll just want to be careful with, like angel wings, baby ears, etc. But there's nothing that will make them much stronger than they already are. With sealife such as sand dollars, sea urchins, etc, you can water down some Elmer's glue or Modge Podge to strengthen them!

Hi Karen! Mollusks (seashells) haven't been as widely studied as many other organisms, but the short answer is they have genetics just like other animals do. The genetics (DNA and RNA) of their species are similar to those of any other animal that gives unique coloring and patterns to their shape and appearance (why tigers and zebras have stripes, and why leopards and lady bugs have spots, and why grizzly bears are brown and polar bears appear white (even though they actually aren't but that's another separate fun discussion!). There are, of course, variations just like in other animals, why some junonias or alphabet cones are lighter, or darker and have smaller or larger spots than others. 😊This is a fascinating article that goes much more in depth, if you're interested!

I do collect a lot of them, there's no way I can pick up every single shell on the beach 😃and it's nice to leave shells for others to find. 💜

Sea porks are tunicates, basically globs of thousands or even millions of tiny individual animals living together in a colony.
