Throwing a “One Piece” Lidded Jar on pottery wheel

- This video shows how to throw the lidded jar in one form. It is usual to throw a lid and a body separately to fit together. This technique shows throw the pot in one closed form then separate into two parts later. It is very interesting method and worth trying. I make many jars in this style and very popular item in my ranges.

Thank you for watching! This tube is water pipe insulation. you can buy at DIY shop in different size. My wheel setting is higher than usual to avoid the back pain. so I can not use my thighs for my arms anchor point. If you also have a same problem with me I recommend this style.

Thank you for watching! Yes I keep them together always. I didn’t show the details in the video but I used the wax at the gallery. I also use not runny glaze for ONE PIECE.

Great video and explanation. I was hoping to see how you removed the bottom that you had wet to attach to the bat to trim. Did you wire it off?
Thank you for your your comment! I use the metal kidney to take a pot off. I used that method in the video “ Throwing a cup with twist”. the pot is attached mainly by the edge so just sliding the metal kidney in should be fine to separate the pot from the wheel. please try.

Thank you for your comment Hannah😊 This is a very good question. I fired them together for the bisque and glaze firing. I need to choose non running glaze and extra care for the joint part cleaning. This pot is tight fit so better to fire the lid and the base together. When I fire the wider flat lid I could fire separately. The flat lid could sag sometime.
I mentioned about this in the cookie Jar video which has flat wide lid.

perfect....good work.my clay work gets crack after drying
Thank you for your comment 😊 Crack after drying? which part of the pot? If you are talking this close form pot and the crack is at the dome part pleas make sure your air vent hole is large enough to release the air. It may be closed during the drying and creates crack. If the clack happens at the bottom after trimming or firing, reduce the bottom thickness. This will prevent an “s” crack at the bottom.

Thank you for your comment Angiea 😊 Yes I leave the lid on the pot. I want to them to shrink in the same condition. You may worried the lid is stacked the pot. In my case it doesn’t happen. The video one is quite tight you can see but no problem. You can start to make slightly loose fitting maybe.
Question-do you fired the lid and pot together during bisque?
Thank you for your question Jane😊. Yes I fire them together for bisque and also glaze firing. For the Glaze firing I need to wax the joint part very well. The glaze needs to be not runny one.
When you trim the lid to make the bevel edge, how do you hold the tool to get that desired ledge effect? I am deaf so I don’t know if you say anything about that. Many thanks x

Your question was “how to hold the tool?” I looked the video again and I couldn’t think I use any unusual way to hold the tool at that point. So I thought I maybe not understanding your question. If you can rephrase your question for me please.

It is seven months later, and I am finally making these. I sure needed to rewatch your video as my time yesterday with trimming my first one sure wasn't as smooth as you have done. Hopefully today at the studio will be better. I will be making a bunch of these for Christmas presents for my grandkids. Thank you again for your video!

The lidded piece is called a sauce pot. Does that mean that it can be heated on a burner? What clay is used. Bisque fired to what cone? Glaze fired to what cone? Thank you!
Hi Susan, thank you for your questions. I am not sure the first question’s meaning, could you explain again please. I used Stoneware buff with 20% Lava clay. Bisque fire is around 1000 degree. The glaze fire is around 1220 degree. I hope this will help 😊
Is there a speedometer on the wheel? How fast is it going and what is the position of your foot/ pedal?
Thank you for your question 😊. There is no speed meter on my wheel. The speed of the wheel is different depending on what I am doing on the wheel. I use a throwing batt most of the time so if you see how batt spins you can get some idea of speed at each stage.
My wheel pedal is just under my right foot.
I know it is difficult to find good speed in the beginning. The best practice is centering and making a cone shape nicely. Also using different softness clay. You will realize the combination of wheel speed and hand power are key points.
