    Nice assessment, Josh! Resonant quarter wave monopole antennas are also resonant on each odd multiple (i.e. 40m is also resonant on 15m) but present very high impedance on the even harmonics. Because the ham bands are harmonically related, that causes problems for us. One way to solve that problem is to use a non-resonant, or "random" wire antenna. Understand that "random" is a misnomer and they aren't actually "random," they are purposefully non-resonant.
    By choosing non-resonant lengths of wire, the feed point impedance on each ham band typically ends up being in the neighborhood of 500 ohms with some reactive impedance that needs to be addressed as well, but nothing too crazy. Many tuners can handle that, but adding a 9:1 unun makes it even easier for a less capable tuner to match. Losses are manageable, provided the wire is at least about 1/3 wavelength on the band of operation.
    A 1/4 wave monopole needs a good ground plane to be efficient. The "random" wire needs at least a counterpoise but is a bit less dependent on a good ground.
    I kind of feel like this antenna is having an identity crisis. Every antenna is a compromise, and there seems to be a claim that you can have your cake and eat it too. I think the design and construction of this antenna are decent and fit many use-cases, but if I were promoting it, I would describe two setup scenarios depending on user preference:
    1) 40m resonant 1/4 wave vertical with radials, also resonant on 15m.
    2) 31 ft non-resonant wire fed with a 9:1 unun, with a 17 ft counterpoise or vehicle ground.
    IMO, these two setups would give optimum performance depending on user priorities. So if you're an Eagle One owner and are reading this, and want to give those a try, let us know how they work for ya.

      The wire in the eagle one is just short of 1/4 wave on 40 which makes it non resonant. thats why the 9:1 works so well.

      I think there's a big issue with some of the oft-repeated lore when people go around bashing tuners. There will be minor tuner losses, but the actual behavior of the coax+antenna system that the tuner matches is more complex than people typically know.
      In real life, a tuner matching a high-impedance antenna will certainly be less efficient than a good vertical with ground plane or dipole. But, it's not nearly as bad as most hams seem to want to believe.
      People seem to think that 2400/50 is 49:1, and they feel like that means almost none of their power ends up on the antenna. But is that what really happens? No -- what happens is multiple trips reflecting back and forth through the coax, each time dumping some signal on the antenna.
      The losses come from resistive losses in tuner elements and the coax. If your coax is very short and the tuner's range is well-suited to the coax+antenna, you will have few losses, and a lot more power ends up on the antenna after multiple trips than people give it credit for. Not saying it's great, but it's more than the 2% that you'll hear some people claim :-/.
      This partly explains why some people have better success than the numbers would make you think, and others have abysmal results. There are a lot of variables, and few people really seem to understand the flow of power through a system like that.

    Highly recommended that the ground lug be used if you're using this on the tripod. This doesn't solve the multiband issue though.

    A 31' vertical antenna with a 4:1 unun and ground radials was recommended by my Elmer with decades of ham radio experience and knowledgeable about antennas. This is a classic design that has been written about a lot. Josh did justice to the explanation. But this is a good compromise antenna for someone like myself with limited space and to be moderately unobtrusive. No complaints from HOA in over a year. For my personal experience no luck with 80 meters, but 40 meters and up is reasonable. Ran 33' radials but had to curve many of them to conform to space.

      The Eagle One antenna is a knockoff of the S9 V18,and V31 antennas,with a few additional features,such as the hitch mount design,and tripod.I’m certain it would work fine on 6-40 meters with a 4:1 unun,especially for DX.

      It's comes with 6:1 I think.
      I use 9 :1.
      I use another brand pole.

    Best explanation I've heard describing impedances on an end fed. The closer you are to 1/2w the higher the impedance will be and the harder it will be to tune. However, if you tune correctly, it's a very efficient antenna. Tuners should be able to match 10/1 and/or have a 49/1 unun. The toroid of the tuner should have taps on a switch and not just the caps for tuning. For SOTA and POTA work, the antenna wire should be attached directly to the tuner and the tuner can then be at the rig. The WARC bands seem to be the worst and the best way to solve the problem is a 1/4 radial for that band. That way the radial, which should always be above the ground to eliminate losses, is lighting up with RF and you are not, when you touch the case of the rig, if you are just using the shield of the coax for a radial. I'm speaking of POTA and SOTA work in the above. de K0MP

    I’ve had my eagle one for about 9 months. It works well, but as you said it’s not the most efficient. I love the portability, ease of set up, and have no trouble with cutting through and get good signal reports.

    Got my Eagle One 2 years ago, love it! It is dead simple to set up, although I have noticed my SWR is high on all bands need to check all the connections, maybe put some radials 3 @ 16’ is what I’ve been told.
    Also, if you are going to use this as a base antenna, when setting up I took duct tape or wide electrical tape where the sections join, then secure with cable ties. Keeps the antenna from collapsing in on itself, live and learn.

    I don't remember the name but someone used to sell an antenna using a fiberglass mast with a wire through it. It came in 27 ft. and 43 ft. It slipped over a pipe to mount it. It did need radials and they sold a radial plate for it. It did require a tuner. I had the 27 ft. version and used it for temporary setups in my yard with about 8 radials, much like you would do with a DX Commander. It worked OK an 40 and above.

    Well done Josh. I have had my Eagle One up here in my HOA for about 3 months. So far so good in that regard. I have four 16 ft radials out but some have to make 90 degree angles to conform to my space. I have found that it performs just great on 40 M but as you suggest, not so much on the other bands. Putting the antenna analyzer on it confirms that it is really only resonant on 40M. Makes sense even more now after your explanation. All in all I am very pleased with the performance on my Eagle One. For the price point it is a nice antenna.

    Great video. I appreciate the detailed explanation. When conditions cooperate, I typically use EFHW or random wires for POTA. Other times, I'm limited to WRC or hamsticks. It's always a compromise. When I find the perfect antenna, I'll stop buying and making them, LOL.

    Hi Glen KC8LA here. I also talked to Tristan at hamvention this year nice guy. I've had this antenna for about 2 1/2 years use it with ft891 ldg z100 tuner. I've run it from home portable and on the RV. RV is 32ft so good counterpoise portable or home I use a min of 16 10ft radials 4 bundles of 4 wires easy to deploy and tunes quicker with 160ft of wire under it. It is a compromise antenna that I think works very well. Not a big contester but I did 70000+ points last year with it in the iaru with multiple same station 5 band contacts eu and us. It will and does work better with the tuner at the base which will be added now that it is permanent on the RV. I was impressed enough with this antenna that I purchased a dx commander for the house (limited space) awesome antenna combined with my ftdx10 my 2 cents

    Very good technical explanations on antennas, especially these types of "all bands". It might work better on bands other than 40M if you shorten the mast down to the 20 meter length and roll the excess lead at the bottom, like a Steppir type of antenna, and use radials.

    I’m a Eagle One owner and user. On 40 meters, the antenna is awesome and I easily can work over 1 station a minute if the hunters are out there, and here in the South East USA, they always seam to be. I was hoping I could run my Eagle One on both 40 meters and 15 meters without using a broad external tuner, just the built in tuner in the radio (Yaesu FTdx10). Unfortunately my Eagle One mounted on my F-250 with the extended hitch is resonate just above 15 meters and my internal tuner can’t correct it. I don’t need the internal tuner on 40 meters, but I generally use the internal tuner to “touch up” the impedance match. Any ideas Josh on how to get 15 meters without using a broad external tuner? I can’t really add any wire or length to the antenna to correct it.
    WRT 20 meters, this excellent video however gave me a good idea on what I could do to get the antenna to work on 20 meters without using a external tuner. I’m tempted to modify one of my excellent TennTennas EFHW boxes that I don’t use anymore and find a way to build some sort of adaptor so I have a 49:1 unun. Hum….

    I think Izzo uses the Eagle One with an SGC tuner at the base to cover band changes. He mentioned it's a very good combo. You and the family stay safe. 73 WJ3U

    Not knocking Tristan at all or you but if you look back at Steve’s info and his recommendations with the EagleOne, he did recommend an unun or a coupler at the feed point such as an Ah-4, SGC-23x etc. When used this way with my SGC-230 to feed it and deploying 7 radials, I often get anecdotal compliments on my signal. I have used it in this configuration for 6m-160m. Not saying that it is the be all end all but it is a tried and true vertical system for portable use. IMHO -KB3CMT

    Thanks Josh for the informative video. I recently acquired the TennTennas 49-1 unun and I am using 33 ft of wire for a EFHW, 20,15,10. I am curious how it will compare to a 20m dipole cut to freq. Going to to use my newly discovered mode WSPR to compare. Fun fun stuff. Thank you for clarifying the eagle one as I was tempted until I heard there was no unun involved. Would be easy for them to partner with TennTennas for a better antenna IMHO. ON a complete SIDENOTE, I did have to run 175 feet of coax to this new EFHW to get it into the building where the radio is. Almost flat SWR on 2m! kinda shocked me. 73 de Jon K7CO

    Question on fan dipoles... if you use something like speaker wire with one of the wires cut to 40M and the other cut to 20M while still attached to each other (not 'unzipped'), what does the proximity of the wires do to performance? Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

      Couldn't you add a wire cut for another and and run it with the 40mtr wire effectively making it a fan dipole

    This would seemingly explain why HRAG (James) is almost always on 40m. Not because it won't work on the other bands but because he tends to do 5 or more parks a day. Staying on 40m allows him to decrease the equipment needed and the time at each park to a minimum.

    I have had the EagleOne for years. The original creator is now SK but that's who I bought mine from. Whenever I use the EagleOne I definitely use the 49:1 and it works well on 20m. Without the 49:1 I found the antenna unusable.

    Ok I have a eagle one on my Icom 7300 with a MFJ remote tuner at the base. It tunes great but im not so great on radials. Would a 49-1 un un improve on this?
    Also the new owners website talks about 6 through 80. Wondering if it will hit on 6 with this setup or if i need to build a 6m antenna.

    I played with an AT1011, very similar concept. Your electrical connections must be SOLID or you risk damaging sense diodes inside an autotuner; this happened during a hurricane when I was inside an EOC and the winds loosened up the hardware. The autotune quit at that point. The high voltages of an end-fed 1/2 wave are rough on equipment. The loose connections caused arcing inside the autotuner. I think 31-33' is a bad length for operating on 20m. So, you may wish to alter the length of the main element if possible. Reference my Oct 2012 article, Tacoma Trucktenna, in CQ Magazine.

    OK, so... Question: Why does mine work so damn well? No counterpoises, simply the antenna wired screwed to the antenna screw terminal on the SG-231 external tuner, and a ground wire from the tuner ground lug, clipped to one of the ground rods with an alligator clip. I can easily do 80-10m, without even trying too hard...
    Genuinely asking to learn, as it seems everyone says it should not work well, especially without counterpoises. When I unpacked it, my first FT8 contact (ever, and basically first HF contact ever) was to Russia! (Disclaimer: That was in August 2021, not after their invasion of a sovereign Ukraine.).
    At that time, it was antenna -> Comet flat window passthru -> MFJ-945e manual tuner -> Kenwood 570SG. Worked fine, hit Russia first time out on FT8.
    I've since upgraded to an FTDX10, MFJ fancy shmancy window passthrough, and an SGC SG-231 160-6 feedpoint autotuner.

      One of the reasons is the ground conductivity. The ground "below the antenna" is either very absorptive or reflective,
      due in part to mineral content and moisture.
      If you place a counterpoise/radial system around your vertical, on or in the ground, RF is absorbed into the ground, whereby placing the radial system at an appropriate distance above the ground allows a reflection plane to occur.
      And in one case, as with a vertical, any RF noise present in the plane is reflected to your receiver via the antenna.
      Most man made noise is vertically polarized.
      Some of the helps for ground conductivity are Epsom salts which have Magnesium Sulfate, which if duly applied to the ground around and under a counterpoise, helps its conductivity, and it's reflectivity of RF signals, depending on the type of soil you have.
      Think of a Vertical installed near a Lake or ocean shore.
      The canoe setup I have used with a "screwdriver" antenna/two different models/power ratings. works well on QRP and above. When conditions are ripe for DX, five watts and under is sufficient. Results with an 1/8 wave or less antenna on 40-10 meters can be phenomenal.
      Signal to Noise Ratio is improved and the tuners that are capable for use with end fed antennas duly need the RF ground to function with good results. Remove the ground clamp and you get RF feedback,etc and poor tuning.
      A lot of variable inductance/capacitive reactance range in the tuner is available for this simple design antenna.
      Yet, disconnect that all important ground, and you may have a smoke test ensue.
      Some of the very heavy duty Manual tuners with large variable inductors and capacitors/ ladder line inputs/bypasses and combinations, will tune but with disastrous results such as arcing of internal components and your rig may see a combination of RF output foldback and instability on transmit with the likely possible damage to final outputs.
      You obviously may have good RF reflecting soil.
      FT8 has a HIGH signal to noise ratio, and that is why when, for example,20 meters is dead on SSB, and CW is just readable,
      RTTY may be fading/PSK is reading a bit higher and many of the myriad Digital modes are 5nn. Check a known
      active net, say 14.300 MMSN for phone activity on a poor propagation day, High readable activity is 1800 UTC to 2200 or so..then FT8 rolls thru the night and near zero activity for SSB. Antenna polarization and cross polarization occurs too.
      So if your setup works consistently ..don't change it ..just improve incrementally where you can.
      If you can't hear "em, You can't work 'em!
      That is where the proper Antenna and knowledge and experience with it's proper operation is King!

    I was under the impression that radials needn’t be tuned unless the feed point about 10’ ish off the ground. Like the WRC I can get resonant on 20m at 1.2:1 with descent bandwidth. SWR curve becomes darn near flat if I add some more radials. But I can’t really tell any difference in performance

      Placing radials on the ground de-tunes them, so the exact length isn't important. I'll usually put out 5-10 radials which are about 15 feet long. This, an unun and tuner always work for me.

    I have the eagle One antenna and I am using the 9:1 UnUn and swr if just about perfect for my Yaesu FT-891 with a auto tuners I love to use it I am in Alabama I've gotten Hawaii Spain Canada several times it does a good job for my use I can't complain. 73 KQ4AHR

    I have an old swan multiband car mount antenna you pulled a pin out and slid it up and down to different coils inside a clear plastic tube but the buttom had 2 controles ina a box with attsched to the antenna one would probably been a variable capasater the other the other ?? Chokes i never got that part the wip end on the antenna was also adjustable

      Radials yes. You should always have radials if not running on trailer hitch. If trying to work outside 40 meters it likely depends on what you can get away with.

    Josh, your explanation was great but failed to mention a couple of things, in my opinion. Tristan, is not the creator of Eagle One Antenna. He is however, the individual who purchased the company from the creators wife and kept the company going. Steve, who was the creator became a silent key last year.
    Steve used to show at HamCation before his health started getting bad a few years ago. Steve also sold use to sell/manufacture a 49:1 balun. He suggested it’s purchase with the antenna and also used to advise to use a LDG tuner at the base of the antenna.
    I give Tristan all the credit in the world in keeping the company going after Steven passed, I just think that because Hamvention was his first show as the new owner of Eagle One Antenna, he might have forgotten some key info. Newbie nerves! Plus you might have been his first person to interview him. 😎
    Maybe a follow up interview could help clear some of those things up.

      Short answer, yes. Long answer is that a 1/4 wave wire fed with a 49:1 unun will not work well because there is now a high current node present at the transformer, instead of a high voltage node. All the extra current makes the transformer very lossy. Also, it's not needed. You can just remove it.

    I'm curious what the loss is through the mast, which amounts to a heavy-walled radome. It would seem better to have the antenna outside of the mast.

      Probably no appreciable loss; Consider what your received signal went through. Lots of commercial antenna manufacturers use fibreglass masts with wire in the ‘glass.

    Why wouldn’t you just collapse the antenna to a 1/4 wavelength @ 20m? Winding the extra wire essentially shortening the wire electronically? Also there is a lug for radials.

    I did not get a clear picture of this antenna. The Eagle one guy said that the feed coax connect to a SO239 at the bottom and runs up inside the mast to the top. This is at about point 1:34 into your video. At first I started to thing top fed vertical and then I am visualizing antenna wire outside the mast running parallel to the coax inside the mast. Not sure where the antenna wire would connect to the coax center conductor. What he said does not make sense as I also can’t see the coax collapsing inside that small mast. Your diagram seems to be the only way it can logically be done.

    So basically a 10M fiberglass mast and a wire for an EFHW that for another $200 you can get a 2" hitch receiver or a tripod to mount it on? Cute package, but seems a bit over priced for what it is.

    Your analysis at 14:05 is really inadequate to explain the tuner situation. I simulated the eagle 1 in MMANA, and it estimates feedpoint impedance at 1839+j1139 at 14.1MHz.
    With an 18' RG58 coax feedline (plausible for portable OPs), and a tuner on the TX side, a SimSmith simulation indicates 33% power delivery to the ANT; -4.3dB from the 89% achieved with ANT-side tuner.
    A 49:1 unun, assuming 95% coupling factor (reasonable) at ANT, and with a TX-side tuner, simulation estimates 75% power delivery to the ANT. So TX->TUNER->COAX->ANT is only -3.5dB compared to TX->TUNER->COAX->UNUN->ANT. Consider those loss figures in terms of S-units :-/.
    Change coax type or length, and numbers go all over the place. Just changing RG58 to LMR240 narrows the gap between no-unun and unun to -3dB! The Eagle 1 isn't exactly great on 20m, but it isn't as bad as you've made it out to be :-).
    Note, this does all depend on having a tuner that has the range for the coax+ANT impedance... it's about 16:1 in these simulations. If you'd like to discuss this further, let me know -- I can hit you up on Discord or something?

      With all due respect. I was trying to paint the antenna as “bad” I was explaining the realities of using antennas and matching them appropriately. Most new folks aren’t having things explained as I did. In favor of a lot of simulations or math.
      I do question the 18’ coax though that could work for a trailer hitch mounted antenna, but most would need at least 25’ from my experience. What’s the numbers then?

      @@HamRadioCrashCourse I used 18' because that's what I use for my POTA setup (I'm not threading it through a vehicle...). Anyway, 25' RG58 yields 31% delivery to the antenna; not much different.
      Honestly, as I watched the video, I imagined I was the guy from Eagle and how he'd feel watching it :-/. The net impression, IMO, is that the video implies it's snake oil (or at least "questionable") by suggesting that an unun is needed. If, instead, you said, "Well, you'll lose about an S-unit on 20m because there isn't an unun," it would not sound as negative.
      On the theory and explanation point -- the variables are so (ahem) variable, that there's risk of harm in broad statements about where tuners should go and what is "sufficient". TX-side tuner is way the heck better than wet noodle, so some of the phraseology is a bit over the top :-).

I mean, we spent 7 minutes with two people to put up a 130' doublet in an inverted V on a 40' spiderbeam with a camco hitch mount for the first 200 or so unique parks I did. One person, it takes about 15 minutes give or take to deploy it. If you're going for speed (and I do), can't beat the screwdriver and mobile install.       I don’t believe that is true. For reasons that are outlined in the link I provided in the description. A 9:1 generally counts on a non-resonant length of wire.

      Also, it has been recommended for the past 20 years or so of the Eagle one production. to use a unun or a good tuner at the antenna. and a deeper dive with Tristan just may gain some more info on that matter.

      @@geoscout87 The issue isn't that a 9:1 isn't effective, it's that the radiating element is resonant on 40 meters. That isn't something you do with a 9:1. See the link in description that walks through many different long wire antennas.

    You really need to do your homework a bit better before you start shooting off your mouth. Tristen did not invent this antenna, he bought the company from the family of the man who was manufacturing it in the past. I just wonder how many more of your reviews are reviews of something you just decided to review without even having one in your possession to test. The 49:1 Unun on this antenna is total crap. The 9:1 works just great. I for one have been using this antenna for many years, Have worked over 10,000 contacts with it. Not everyone has the room to put up even the shortest dipole. You are doing amateur radio a disservice with your opinion reviews based on non-fact You should try getting a real job and closing this down.

Those of us that have been using this antenna for years actually have found it works pretty good with a 9:1 unun Maybe you should stick to your career.

    As it happens, I bought a virtually identical (black) antenna about 15-20 years ago (as I recall, it was at the Athens, Ohio hamfest) from S&G Engineering (Proctorsville, OH) - it even has an Eagle on the label
    And, yes, I still have it - don't recall if I bought the tripod or not - definitely didn't buy the hitch mount, but I'm fairly certain both were available - seems to me the antenna cost right about $30
    I didn't buy it for a permanent installation, but for portable/mobile use, and I believe I used it a few times for OSPOTA - I was thinking of cutting the wire in specific spots (adding some type of compact quick connect) to make it relatively easy to modify length for changing bands, thereby obviating the necessity of 49:1 unun - alas, that never happened ..
    My observations are that your assessment is dead on - it's usable and better than wet pasta, which will rather quickly dry out

      Same company, Tristan took over. W8AFX became a silent key in November. He was the S in S&G. Might just order a cold spare to help keep them going. Perfect in HOAs, as they resemble a “big fishing rod” I’ve been told… still the ONLY HF antenna I own and use, and make all my contacts with.
