As someone who lives in Wisconsin, and has below freezing temperatures for months on end, I'd recommend to people in the south to dress in layers. Have most layers be a button up or zippered style on the chest. If you do need to do work, unzip the front so your arms stay warm but you can let off a bit of heat without sweating. Once you start sweating and then stop working and you're cold, thats when hypothermia sets in quick.
In north Michigan it’s all about layering materials, cotton absorbs moisture keeps you wet and cold. Polypropylene wool. Ie duofold is best. Wool rich outer garments used by my Svedish grampas for years. Keep hand face feet dry, wind breaks for sure. Hot chocolate yes
I saw something interesting to keep your hands warm. Baked potatoes wrapped in aluminum foil. They put it in there coat pockets, walking to school and ate them at lunch. Not sure where i saw this but it is interesting.
When selling a property, I always liked the idea of having an information binder about the property. With stuff like how old the well pump is and where it is. Where all the breaker boxes are and how to get into the cold cellar. Even stuff like which internet providers are in the area, which is best.
We are in central Florida, I live with my daughter and son in law, 3 children...they don't even think about no electricity, even thoigh we have 2 fridges and a deep freezer...they have a small generator, perhaps enough for the feezer. I asked if we could just get a buddy heater, nope. (Not that I can't get 1, but I wanted to talk about it...) I have covers for my garden, and younger fruit trees, and just praying...thank you, Sir. The bext owners will be so blessed!
Have your area or space set up for no electric & they'll take you seriously when your comfortable (warm n fed) & they're not. Let them suffer a few days before "helping" ..
I believe that we have as much ready as we can for the weather moving into our area here in the Ozarks. Mark gave us plenty of warning to get it done early. 😊
Hopefully things go well for you guys ! Lots of my family around the Cuba/Sullivan area in MO. Think we’re gonna get a good one here in Southern Indiana too !
@BornAgainOutdoorsman stay safe and warm! We're right on the ice/ rain line now. We're prepared for the worst, but we're praying for the best. My daughter is in the heavy snow area in Northern Kansas, and my son is right in the center of the heaviest ice. I'm so glad that they were raised to know what to do and how to care for themselves so this momma doesn't have to worry.
You two have done a lot of work at Deep South. It is a beautiful place and I hope it sells quickly for you. I am currently curled up under a blanket and crochet afghan staying toasty warm.
Mr Danny, I have some interesting info about pineapples! I was at the Azores Islands where they grow incredible pineapples. When I went in the greenhouse I was shocked at the size of the plants. The guy told me that once they start to fruit, they cut half the leaves down on the plant & it makes the pineapple grow much sweeter & helps to increase the flavour even more. The plants were really small looking. He said cutting the leaves at fruiting makes the plant put more sugar into the fruit instead of the leaves. Another crazy thing, they smoke the plants! Literally for 3 - 5 days they light a fire & smoke the greenhouses out, the guy said it makes all the pineapples fruit at the same time. There are actually a few videos on youtube about it. Type Azores pineapples.
I have a snow mobile suit that I throw on in the extreme cold. I have aquarium heaters in the rain water totes, but not a lot I can do to keep the spigots defrosted. Pour hot water over them, I guess. We've got a wood stove and a ventless propane heater for back up. The 'cabin' is only 30x12 so it doesn't take a lot to heat. I insulated it well.
Growing up we heated with coal but mostly wood. I would take a brick put it on top of the stove. When it got hot I would wrap it up with a towel and take it to bed at night.
Good morning. It’s so sad to see you leaving that property but pecan grove is super sweet. I live in PA and I only have electric heaters working at the moment. I do have a kerosene heater I can use while I’m here. I have many blankets for my cats just in case the power goes out.
We went to Hattiesburg yesterday and bought an L2502DT. They are getting all the attachments together. If they don't call today, we will not go get it until after the ice is over. First time I drove in snow was when I was a new truck driver and in PA. I KNOW all about ice on bridges and frozen pines falling. I want to do laundry before it hits. Folks, do everything needing electricity NOW. Do as much as you can outside NOW. Wanda, want to teach me how to drive a tractor this spring? LOL That will be fun.
We're headed for a winter storm here in WV. Not looking forward to it. It's not always as easy to have things prepared if you have only electric and not sure what to do. People where I live just leave , not caring about their neighbors whatsoever. They have better vehicles and big families to help them. The last time this happened here I almost froze until I could actually get out on the road to drive my 98 Tacoma. I bought a propane heater but have never used it yet. It gets really cold in a mobile home.
Stay warm. Do you have wool blankets? Those help in bed on top of your other blankets. Also wool socks on top of regular socks. Layer up!! Also a knit cap on your head. If you have pets then put them in bed with you. Body heat from one another really helps. Get your propane heater out, read the instructions, and have it ready to go. Remember flashlights, lots of food, and water. Also, put rugs or blankets on the floor to keep the floor warmer, and blankets at the windows help. Keep the heater away from anything flammable. Read through the comments for more suggestions. God Bless You.
I use down comforters at night, allows me to keep thermostat off in the bedroom and sleep comfortably with out stuffy dry air which is healthier also. I do have camping supplies as well that comes in handy during power outages, which are a frequent occurrence here in northeast Pennsylvania.
hi mr danny 🤗 as usual, i see you're doing a lot of work preparing deep south for sale. the new owners will have a real treasure. you two are definitely prepared for the cold weather - thank God.
I recently was told that a tent even helps you stay warm if you put it up in your home with a sleeping bag. thanks for all you do Danny and Wanda. God bless you both.
I heated with wood for a couple of years. Decided I was better off selling the firewood and paying the power bill. We use a propane heater for back up. Wife and I want to build a tiny(small) home and make a wood burn a central part of it. People used to build the house around the fireplace. But Im getting old , so you have to rethink things.
I installed a wood burning stove and ordered those sleeping bags and washer burned a few years ago, after your video. I have collected blankets and shrink wrapped them. They are under my bed, just in case. As always thanks!!
Good morning … my insulated overalls are rolled up too…I have to bring up some wood and put on the porch today or tomorrow too… cover the faucets, drain the water in the high tunnel, put up plastic around my porch … I better get busy.. thank you
I ordered sum butane/propane heaters and adapters for the bigger tanks to go on my porch where my citrus trees are… I need sum of those little fans for my wood heater. I like the hot water bottle covers …i have sum of those old cast iron , irons that are on top of my heater …in 2021 when we didn’t have power for a week , I had chicks that were hatching .i rolled the irons up in towels and put in with the chicks and it kept them warm and the rest of the eggs hatched too
Don't forget to power up all electronics like power banks, rechargeable batteries, flashlights, etc. Clean coolers in case freezer food needs to go outside (provided temps are below 30 degrees). Other heat sources of heat include ceramic heaters if you have electricity, Buddy propane heaters and kerosene heaters (not ideal, but something). We also have used tents inside the house, heat house bricks on a grill, and laid them inside the tent on galvanized wash bins. Sounds crazy, but in 15 degree temps with no electricity and limited generator use, you will think of anything to stay warm.
I live in Tennessee. It looks like that winter vortex will hit us a little bit tomorrow and then again over the weekend. It is gonna be a mess. I went shopping today and I found a looks like almost brand new igloo cooler for five dollars so I bought it now I have two coolers in case we do lose power and I have to put food in the cooler. Thanks for all the information. Y’all be blessed and everybody be safe.
Very good advice. I think I should check into coveralls . I need more gloves. I have hand warmers bit saving those for outside. I have waterbottle., but i think i will crochet a sweater for it. Would be better than trying to keep a towel wrapped around it. Thank you and have a lovely day.
Now, as long as the high tunnel doesn’t freeze… but there are ways of putting in small, temporary heat sources (maybe one at each end) like a rocket stove mass heater (think how long the syrup cooker radiated heat) or a waste oil heater (and there are many designs online) which is what keeps our shop warm enough run you out if it’s not kept turned down. It’s GOOD to know that you are well prepared.
Good morning Mr Danny and Ms Wanda. Odd to see deep South so barren. Getting ready for the cold finished putting in our wood heater just in time. Praying y'all stay safe in this cold snap. Have a blessed day
For My bed or for a couch cover wool blankets. They are the warmest. For beauty and quality Hudson Bay but in the cheaper some army surplus wool blankets.
Thank you for sharing today's video very informative very important on how to stay warm on these bitter chili days that are here and coming up more over this winter❤
I love it spidam 😅 you all are having too much fun! But that bacon 🥓 looks amazing definitely if Ms Wanda will share the recipe we would be forever grateful. Stay warm you 2 .
well, you have to find work and make money, 1st thing. The propane delivery company helped me, ironically.. I filled 250 gallon tank before winter. It's about the tank rental charge! And avoiding it. A lot easier than burning wood, sort of a headache.
Good mornin' Danny, Wanda, and everyone😊 Really good ideas for staying warm. Wood stoves or fireplaces are a lifesaver when electricity goes out. You can at least cook on them too! We always kept a pot of water going on ours to keep the humidity up in the house. Those below zero sleeping bags are a good investment. And warm! I found an old snorkel parka from Sears. My husband had one from the army many years ago. They work fantastic keeping the cold off your face. All really good ideas Wanda!
Sorry I forgot to ask do you have electricity today or that was just the title of your video I will watch the rest later as I was up the entire night and it's almost 9:00 I guess I might as well stay up or sleep at least an hour today I have trouble sleeping during the night these days praise the Lord I don't have to get outdoors and I do have electricity and heat praises and praises to all and pray for those that don't have electricity today or a roof over the head their heads Etc

Feather beds are the BEST!
Down comforters, down sleeping bags, etc...
Thats where the farm geese really earned their "keep".

Hot food, wrapped, serves two purposes: as long as it stays warm, it helps keep you warm, and it’s ready to eat food.
Unless it takes electricity to bake them taters for some.
Potato were shown on little house and the prairie
My dad did this in WV
My Fssther was a boy during the depression. He told me his mother would give him a potato to keep his hands warm when he walked to school
The old Army wool blankets that used to be issued were really good for warmth as well as merino wool socks
Been watching weatherman Plus praying all are safe in the path of this crazy storm
When selling a property, I always liked the idea of having an information binder about the property.

Yes and in a pinch a blanket fort does the same thing.
I believe that we have as much ready as we can for the weather moving into our area here in the Ozarks. Mark gave us plenty of warning to get it done early. 😊

Yes yes in north Michigan sub zero, one piece snow suit rules the ice, keep away from sparks, it’ll melt in 2seconds
If you dont have alternative heat, put tent up inside home (or create one with blankets) to sleep in. thanks Wanda
Growing up we heated with coal but mostly wood. I would take a brick put it on top of the stove. When it got hot I would wrap it up with a towel and take it to bed at night.
Same thing in north Michigan. Also hot water bottles
Great ideas to stay warm. I don’t have wood heater. Have propane. Wish I had wood.

Ski bibs. The packaged hand warmers work good to put in your shoes and pockets.
I recently was told that a tent even helps you stay warm if you put it up in your home with a sleeping bag. thanks for all you do Danny and Wanda. God bless you both.
Yep. Don't have one? Make a blanket fort! It works!!
