  • I'm unboxing all of my BJU Press curriculum for my 1st grader, 3rd grader, 5th grader and 7th grader. We are doing BJU Press Distance Learning this year for a lot of our subjects. I'm also chatting a bit about homeschooling. Watch to the end for a good laugh in the blooper section. :)

    I am Gabrielle, I'm 11, and I've been in Bob Jones since third grade, now I'm going into seventh. Okay, so I've done all the book links and they have nothing to do with the Internet. Example, it is sixth grade summer and your sixth grade Reading Teacher is Mrs. Walker. A book link is a Bob Jones book you read during the summer with the teacher. I read The Secret of the Golden Cowrie (yes, you did pronounce it right) with Mrs. Walker last summer. There are activities like recipes and mosaics and little comprehension work texts you can do. This year I read A Father's Promise and Forbidden Gates. I love Bob Jones homeschooling. Thank you for posting this video, it was very helpful and enjoyable.

    You are sooo awesome!! Love your unboxing video. I am using Bju DLO for my 4th grader as well. It is working out very well so far. Thanks for sharing.

    I just purchased K4 teacher led kit, plus a few extras. I didn't do an unboxing however, but did do a kit overview. I enjoyed this so much! Thanks for sharing. I'm looking forward to seeing how 1st grade distance learning works out for you. That's when I plan to make the switch. :) I sighed a sigh of relief when you took out that getting started booklet, lol! Definitely please review the grade 1 kit. :) I love that you adjusted grade levels to fit each child individually so they could meet academic goals. I didn't know all of the BJU tips you shared. Thanks again!

      Glad it was helpful! I will try to review 1st grade materials. I only purchased heritage studies and science for 1st grade though.

    Haha, my unboxing went so bad. I am editing it. But it was so much. I bought 4 grades and k4 with dvds.

    I will have a second grader and a 5th grader next year so I would be very interested to see reviews on those grades. We are trying bju English and Bible for fourth grade this year. It's the first time I've tried them. Although we are not doing any videos. Thanks so much for your video. I really enjoy watching you.

      Here is my review of BJU English: th-cam.com/video/tOCxcf5vu5o/w-d-xo.html
      We are trying out BJU Bible this year for the first time. We are using the videos. I'd love to hear what you think of it after you've used it awhile since you are teaching it on your own. Blessings in your homeschool year!

    What did you end up using for 7th grade history? I'm looking at doing bju world studies for 7th grade next year, but there's not a whole lot of reviews out there for it, which makes me nervous.

      I can't remember what we used for 7th grade history when this video came out but my son is using BJU Press World History (7th grade) this year and is really enjoying it and learning a lot. He is using the video option.

    Are there science experiments in BJU? I'm considering doing BJU for three kids next year. I'm recovering from a long illness and this year was a disaster because. Recovery was supposed to be 6 weeks and it's now 11 months later and I'm still struggling. I'd live advise.

    Does BJU curriculum have lessons planned for daily, weekly monthly increments? I’m looking for something already laid completely out for me.

    Any chance you can review grade 4?
    Also did you get the actual teachers guides with the DLO. I didnt see that in the contents online for the whole grade curriculum. Before I bought the whole parent led subject, then added the video DLO for 100.00 extra, Thanks

      Teachers manuals and answer keys are accessed online when you do the DL Online option.

    Hi Janelle, Thanks for your video on BJU DLO. I just submitted my order for grade 7/8 and realized..."Wait, do I even need the physical textbooks if we will have access to them online anyway?" Did you find that using the physical textbooks were necessary with the DLO version? Can you print the online worktext pages as you go? I am asking from a perspective of ignorance (for lack of a better word..ha!) I have not even received my login credentials yet!

    • @JanelleKnutson
      @JanelleKnutson  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maven Palmer You do need the textbooks and worktexts. The teachers manual is online as a pdf but not the books. The tests and quizzes for older kids are online as well. Hope that makes sense. 😊

      Janelle Knutson, I have one more question. Do you have your students complete 1 video and lesson a day in each subject? and How long did you guys take to complete the entire school year with BJU DLO/DVD? 9 months worth of work or less/more?
      Okay, that was two questions...sorry.

    • @JanelleKnutson
      @JanelleKnutson  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We average about 170 days of school each year no matter what curriculum we are using. In CA, where we use to live, private homeschoolers determined their own number of days for a school year so I went with around 170. I have my kids do 1 video lesson a day for each subject on most days. Some days we only get to a few subjects. We do not do every single video lesson. I skip a lot of the review and cumulative review lessons and any other video lessons that I think are not necessary for my child to learn that year (or that they already know).

    Sorry for the silly question! But I am from South Africa and is looking into homeschooling and trying to learn a lot. But what does BJU stand for ?

    • @JanelleKnutson
      @JanelleKnutson  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BJU stands for Bob Jones University. It is a university for college students PLUS they publish curriculum for private Christian schools and homeschools. Don't feel silly. I wondered the same thing when I started homeschooling and I get that question a lot from others. :)

    Hi, I've enjoyed your videos. I am really curious how you are able to do all of this curriculum with 5 kids? Lol
    I am adding my son this year so I will only have 2 to teach and I am wondering how it's going to work. I know that some combine subjects like science and history but yours each have their own. I am just wondering how you make it happen. There's just one of you!! Lol

    • @JanelleKnutson
      @JanelleKnutson  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ha! Yes, there is only one of me! This year I am trying something different than what I did in the past. I am having all 4 of my school age kids do some subjects via video. That means they will watch their lessons being taught to them by another teacher (from BJU Press). This will allow them to each work on their own lessons without me having to teach all of them. In the past, we have joined together for history, science, Bible and some of our literature. Then I have had my older kids work independently on other subjects. That gave me time to focus my efforts on my younger ones, teaching them to read and basic math skills. So, yes, this is a ton of curriculum for one mama to do with 4 kids (plus juggling a preschooler and toddler). But it will hopefully be doable with the video lessons. :)

    How did you like BJU after this year?

    • @JanelleKnutson
      @JanelleKnutson  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We've LOVED BJU Press Distance Learning now for several years! It's been a good fit for most of my kids for a good chunk of their subjects. Some kids use an entire grade kit and some just use BJU for a subject or two.

      Janelle Knutson ,
      We are meeting with homeworks consultant on the 18th. We are excited! A little worried about videos. I think will cut out half of videos and focus on self learning with the textbooks to save some time.
      When we moved back to our home state a year and a half ago, my daughter wanted to try public school. Now she wants to go back to homeschooling! So of course we will!😀
      Thanks for your channel! It has been a huge help for me! ❤️💛💚🧡💙💕

    How did bju life science go?
    Is the print font big enough to read?
    It seems the pictures take up a lot of space and the print looks small on screen

    • @JanelleKnutson
      @JanelleKnutson  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never really noticed that the print was small until you mentioned it. It is a bit smaller than usual text but not too hard to read at all. Like I said, we never noticed. My daughter really enjoyed the Life Science course. We used the Distance learning videos with this course which really made it come to life.

    • @lollymanna
      @lollymanna 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JanelleKnutson One more thing, do you feel the bju life science videos are long enough for the students to grasp the concepts?
      I looked at the website and it says the videos average 13 minutes.
      How many pages in the textbook ( the average) are read before the videos are viewed.

    • @JanelleKnutson
      @JanelleKnutson  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lollymanna The student would definitely need to do all the reading for each lesson. The videos help explain difficult concepts and/or bring the information to life. My daughter found the videos very helpful. She'd do the reading, be confused about a few things and then watch the video lesson and it would all click for her. I can't remember how many pages she read on average but for the Earth Science curriculum that we are using right now, they average about 10 pages per lesson.
