My dad died listening to this song. It was his birthday and cancer had snuck up on him. He knew he was going and had slipped into a coma. I got him this CD that day. I'd listened to this album growing up and I knew he could hear us. I put the CD on and he looked up at smiled at me and started to cross himself-- I helped him finish the crossing. He died listening to this song. Rock on in peace Dad! Wherever he is, he's got music!
Watched a lot of these , figured I’d add my two cents.. read a lot of comments also.....born in 1964 grew up listening to the Statlers loved them from the time I was 6 or 7. While Jimmy is no Lew, Lew was also definitely no Jimmy they are alike but have there own deferences..(in my opinion). And let’s remember the Statlers probably never would have found Jimmy if not for Lew, so Lew know what was there before anyone and suggested Jimmy to the Statler Brothers! Also see a lot of comparisons to the Oak Ridge Boys. excellent group love them too!!! But again in my opinion, there’s simply no comparison in my mind, THE STATLER BROTHERS were definitely better, quite possibly The BEST - ALL TIME. If your a Statler fan check out “THE FOURTH MAN” it’s an oldie you may not have seen
I think it is great that these high school buddies remained friends through out their success. And Jimmy lived just a few miles over the mountain! Great examples of Virginia gentlemen.
I met Lew when I was about 12 or 13. He was so very nice and he even said I was a cute young lady.. I have a book in with all 4 Statler Brothers signatures. My mother and dad went to see them .. I treasure that book ❤
My wife and I want to a Statler/Mandrel concert in Shreveport, La. when I was about 27. She wanted an autograph after it was over and gave me a piece of notepaper. Sigh, I joined the crush of teenagers rushing the stage (they all had purchased photos to be signed). I was being crushed and had made it to about row three. Phil looked up, saw this older guy with just a piece of paper, reached out as far as he could over the others, took it to the others and Barbara and got it signed and brought it back. Thanks Phil. You have been my favorite since that day.
I was at a concert shortly before I got married. At the end of the concert I gave Harold a note requesting sheet music to one of their songs for my wedding. A week later I not only got the had written sheet music from the composer Harlen Howard, but a hand written note signed by Harold. Yes it was his signature, I have it from previous concerts. These guys are the best and I have been a faithful fan since early 70's. Wow, I'm old, but devoted.
@Justjab, Lew actually personally picked Jimmy over all the other Tenors that auditioned to take his place on a temporary 6 month Stint. At the end of the 6 months, Lew tried to return to full time touring, and recording with the Statlers, but his health would not allow him to, so he reached out to both Harold, and Don, and advised them that he would not be able to return, and that they should hire Jimmy as his permanent replacement, and they took Lew's advice, and with Jimmy now in as Lew's permanent replacement, he brought with him some new songs that he had penned, and at least 2 of Jimmy's songs, if not more, became instant hits for the group. They had Lew for 18 years, and Jimmy stayed with them for 21 years right up until their very last Show on October 26th, 2002, which was held at the Salem Civic Center, in Salem, Virginia, just 90 miles from their Hometown in Staunton, Virginia. They picked Salem for their last Show because with it being just 90 miles from home, they were all able to get home that night after the Show.
I'm very sorry to see people arguing about Lew versus Jimmy. They are two very distinct kinds of voices, and some people like one and some like the other. The thing we have to remember is that Lew started them out with Flowers, but Jimmy extended their career even longer than Lew was there with more songs and more top hits. And he today in his solo career never fails to give Lew credit for recommending him. Keep in mind that Jimmy was with them for over 20 years of award-winning music. If they had not found him, we probably would have lost the Brothers. As Jimmy often notes, "It was a God thing" for him AND for them.
me too! i saw them once and what a time i had. i was due to have my baby in two weeks and so i was very preggers. i just kept thinking, if the excitment causes me to go into labor i will probably be the first woman to give birth during the show, but i wasnt leaving till it was over! lol.
I miss them too. When we were little, my mother would take me, my brothers and my sister to see them every time they were in Louisville. We knew every song.
Lew was my favorite, and always will be. I really miss the Statlers, but I am glad we had them for the years we did. We went to Happy Birthday USA in Staunton several times and it was great! Also saw Lew on his own and have his solo albums.
i think you said it exactly right. lews voice could be very haunting, but jimmy pulled it together after he left. they were both so amazing and sounded so different (lew and jimmy) yet each worked beautifully with the others.
I loved these guys when I was a kid, and still do. My dad "introduced" me to them when I was about 5 or 6 years old. This was/is my favorite song. Something strange happened to me a few minutes ago. I was thinking about this song and the Family Feud hosts after Richard Dawson left. Even though this song is about the Statler Brothers and their "contribution to the cause", it somehow fits. They were different but were glad to have had a chance to "bring something to the table". Even though they were no Richard Dawson, they had something that made the fans tune in and watch. The Statler Brothers (with Jimmy Fortune) were even on The Family Feud at one time, but with Ray Combs. They had Brenda Lee playing with them. I think they were playing against The Mandrell Family, but I'm not sure.
Lew with that chilling, almost haunting, solo stands out in this song. Also it's almost satisfying to see all four are almost the same height. Can't find that in a quartet.
Just seen them on TV and brought back the memories, was my mothers favorite of all. She totally loved these guys, They came to Joplin MO. I believe in early 90's and I told a friend of mine I had to take my momma, she was on cloud 9. She has since passed, It bring me joy that I have that memory of her with that gleam in her eyes all evening.
The first time I ever heard them was when I a kid. The song was "Flowers On the Wall'. I had no idea that they were a country group, but I loved their harmony. I had the great experience to see them live before they retired. They appeared at our county fair & they were sensational! After that, Jimmy Fortune appeared at the fair. He was sensational. I actually got to meet him & his wife & I have an autographed picture. I bought his album (I don't remember now what the title was) & he signed that too. I also have a DVD. I had a great time. The fair has since stopped having concerts for some reason.
Kathleen Cook Actually, Jimmy did not write Thank You World at all. Don, Harold, and Lew wrote it together, long before Jimmy even came into the Picture, and was part of the Statler Brothers Group. Jimmy did however, re write the very last verse of the Song, after Lew's Passing. Listen to Lew's last Verse from many years ago, and then listen to Jimmy's version of that last verse from their farewell Concert, and you notice, that the lyrics are slightly different between the 2 versions.
Lou is in this version. I never noticed a difference; will have to listen closely. "You've let me sing your praises World and harp about your faults, thank you World for lettin me contribute to the cause. It is the world "harp" - I'll have to search out a recording with Jimmy.
I love the Statlers. We went thru the museum a few years ago,and saw the school in they attended it was so special. They were my mothers favorite singing group .We sure miss them.So glad I found this site.
We were at a concert in Louisville around this time. The crowd made them do 3 encores. I have never heard of or seen anything like that before or after.
I told Mom I was goig to see the "Statler Brothers". She said "But they're not the same ones." I didn't care, they were "The Statler Brothers". NO disrespeck, but the "NEW" one was better !
Took my son to see them. He's young and a hard rock lover. Motly Crew or what ever there called. Went to see them twice at Westbury Music Fair. He's still a hard rock fan but he's also a country fan because of them.
I thought it was interesting that they change the key for Don's verse, then Don sings "Sometimes I sing your music slightly out of key". I've always wondered if the key change combined with the lyrics was coincidence or a very subtle joke.
Lew Dewitt I believe the Statler Brothers owe to you. You wrote their breakthrough hit "Flowers on the wall" and co-wrote this song. Although the other members are very talented it was Lew Dewitt that got them where they are. It was painful to watch them never mention Lew's name after he left because of illness. Jimmy is great and Lew gave his blessing to Jimmy. Lew Dewitt, a classy person up to the end. Thank you Lew Dewitt.
I too thought it was wrong that they never mentioned him after he left & passed away. You think that they could have devoted an episode of their TNN show to his memory. They never mentioned him in their farewell concert that they used to show on PBS. It was almost like he never existed. But we fans all know how great he was & how important he was to their sound.
YES! I love Lew, but I love Jimmy too. When I was small I wanted to be a Statler Brother. Then Jimmy came along and I figured if I couldnt join 'em, I'd just as soon marry one! LOL. He kept them relevant for another generation.
What a great song, Killer suits... I saw American Pride, a tribute group to the Statler Brothers in Sevierville, TN. They had the Red White and Blue suits like the Statlers did. There no Statlers, but it was like stepping back in time. Bass singer looked like Harold.
I feel this says much about how they feel about US. But 'Some I Wrote' tells us how they feel about their music. As to differences...I think that will appear from song to song, their ages, and the times they lived in while recording. Just as with other entertainers. On this song I like when he sings 'I know I make it harder on the other three.' JMO. Check out the LIVE 'Some I Wrote' video. Would love to hear your opinion.

I agree the Statlers helped "pave the way" for groups like them but whether or not the oaks will be remebered as good as the statlers is up to the individual thinking about their careers! Don't get me wrong, I love the statlers music but to say the oaks are conventional is just being under educated about the oaks music. I have a LARGE music collection by both groups. Hey, do you happen to know the Statler Brothers' quiz song? I've looked high and low for it, but I must not be searching for the right title or something. Just looking for a little help. :) I've about worn out the tape we have of it.
@TimothyCow, Harold passed away in April of 2020, but Don, Phil, and Jimmy are still alive. Jimmy has a Solo Career now in Nashville, while Don is an accomplished Author of several books, and Phil still sings with their Church Choir.

To Harold, Phil, Jimmy, Don and Lew I just want to say THANK YOU guys for 40 some years of really good music!!!!!
I don't care what kind of music you are into, these guys were immense talents.
Correct!
Thank you world by The Statler Brothers>ACDEFU by Gayle
Change my mind
Daddy and saw them in concert twice in Salem, VA. It was the closest venue to their hometown of Staunton, VA. What great memories!

I think it is great that these high school buddies remained friends through out their success.

Wow! Great story, Lisa Hughes! I always wanted My Only Love at my wedding, but I couldn't find a pianist good enough to do it justice.
I was at the concert, Rikki0!! Small world!!
Phil has always been a consummate gentleman
Jimmy had huge shoes to fill and I think he did an awesome job.
I took my Mom to see him sing 3 yrs ago....he sung Happy Birthday to her
Jimmy Fortune was a godsend for the group when Lew was unable to return.
@Justjab, Lew actually personally picked Jimmy over all the other Tenors that auditioned to take his place on a temporary 6 month Stint. The GREATEST GROUP EVER in country music...bar none!!!

One of my most favorite groups ever.

these guy s are great they are beater then the music to day and im only 25
Lew was the best tenor ever. RIP Lew
just great fun to watch the Statlers. great
I love Harold's movement in the opening verse of this, but I love the whole song and the reason. We LOVE YOU Statlers
Took my son to see them. He's young and a hard rock lover. Motly Crew or what ever there called. Went to see them twice at Westbury Music Fair. He's still a hard rock fan but he's also a country fan because of them.
I went to see them twice. Once in Charleston WV and once in Huntington (couple years apart) and Lew was still with them. I miss them like crazy.
My favorite vocal group! So much talent! And this is one of my favorite songs of theirs
I thought it was interesting that they change the key for Don's verse, then Don sings "Sometimes I sing your music slightly out of key". I've always wondered if the key change combined with the lyrics was coincidence or a very subtle joke.
The Statlers cared about the fans... the so called stars of today don't give a crap where their paycheck come from
Saw these guys a few times at Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery, Alabama and was just amazed.
The Statler Brothers are timeless & irreplaceable & it's just not the same without Lew.
Lew Dewitt I believe the Statler Brothers owe to you. You wrote their breakthrough hit "Flowers on the wall" and co-wrote this song. I LOVE The Statlers and Lew DeWitt
yeah!!!
statler´s, they are just one of the best!!!!
Best in the business!
Harold is one of the best bass singers ever.
No group can beat these guys.
Lew was an awesome tenor!
Awesome you have no clue how much your music helped me,thank you
love this guys always and forever...
The best of the best, always to me❤️
They very Great Statler Brother outstanding Artist , enjoyable, thanks God!
The reason they stand opposite of conventional quartets (Oak Ridge Boys) is the fact that Lew DeWitt played guitar.
Wicked cool, though.
I never thought about that. Yes, cool!!
The best!.
Wish they got to the UK,,! Back then,,!
Same here, I'm glad someone my age likes them too. (I'm 14)
Lou was still with them in this version. Jimmy was great but he wasn't Lou.
No he wasn't, and replacing Lou would be impossible. Jimmy filled in admirably. I like the fact that he never tried to be Lou, he just was Jimmy.
Lew
Never could get into them after Lew..............
Jimmy hit the notes, but the soul was in Lew.
YES! I love Lew, but I love Jimmy too. When I was small I wanted to be a Statler Brother. Then Jimmy came along and I figured if I couldnt join 'em, I'd just as soon marry one! LOL. He kept them relevant for another generation.
We are losing so many great singers and so few are taking there place.
God Bless Lew DeWitt And The Statlers Love Ya Lisa CUPP
איזה ביצוע מדהים!!!
great song and group i miss them
the best vocal group ever
THE Song I love more than any other!
In all the line-ups that I've ever seen, Lew/Jimmy has always been on that side of Don, except whenever Don and Harold and Phil were moving around.
That's because they both played the guitar and it would have put the guitar neck in Don's face if they had stood the way most quartets do.
great song i wish they would have a reunion tour
excellent
Awesome favorite luv
What a great song, Killer suits... I saw American Pride, a tribute group to the Statler Brothers in Sevierville, TN. They had the Red White and Blue suits like the Statlers did. There no Statlers, but it was like stepping back in time. Bass singer looked like Harold.

This was the true Statler Brothers!
They are so good we can forgive them for those horrid 70s bellbottoms....
Thank you world for the Statler Brothers.
The Statlers were a pleasant anomaly...they patterned themselves after a typical southern gospel quartet, yet they did not sing the normal parts of a typical southern gospel quartet. Harold was a baritone covering a higher-than-normal bass range; both Phil and Lew sang tenor, and with Don singing lead, there was no true baritone in the group.
If it hadn't been for the characteristics of their voices and their incredibly smooth blend, it probably wouldn't have worked. But for them, it did.
Harold sang bass. I don’t think he could sing baritone if he wanted to. For me, his bass note on “watching Capt K---angaroo” in Flowers On The Wall just made that song.
@@carolahb That's an F below staff. Not at all a reach for a bass singer. Harold had a true bass timbre, even if he didn't have the range.
Amen!
The Oak Ridge Boys were (are) a very good group. BUT in no way will they every be remembered as good as the Statler Brothers. the Statlers paved the way for groups like them and Alabama to have great careers. Have the Oaks retired from touring yet?
They just announced that they are retiring in 2024. They are on their final tour now.
Anyone know when this video is from? It's obviously late 70's because of Lew, but I'd still like to know when it's from.
jimmy was good but he was no lew. but i really think that they could not find a better replacement than jimmy.
@99sco, Lew personally picked Jimmy as his replacement, which initially was to be for 6 months while Lew was seeking treatment for his Chrons Disease. At the end of the 6 months however, when it was determined that Lew's health had not improved well enough for him to return, Lew told Harold, and Don that he would not be able to return, and to go ahead and hire Jimmy as his permanent replacement.
Thank You Statler Brothers I'm going to use your words! So here's your notice... hope you don't mind. Thank you. I love you. God bless you.
And yes...Dear World,
Thank the hell out of you for letting me contribute to your cause, too!!
only two orignal statlers left
@jamesjohnson5036, yes, there are only 2 of the original Statler Brothers left, Don, and Phil.
the famous people of today, ALL of them forget who pay their bills.
THANK YOU WORLD for FORD NIX who was a World Class Banjo player RIP FORD and BETTY Love you both
I agree the Statlers helped "pave the way" for groups like them but whether or not the oaks will be remebered as good as the statlers is up to the individual thinking about their careers! Don't get me wrong, I love the statlers music but to say the oaks are conventional is just being under educated about the oaks music. I have a LARGE music collection by both groups. But if you want to get into multiple sounds, styles, etc of both groups, the oaks, no doubt, have more versatility!

Hey, do you happen to know the Statler Brothers' quiz song? I've looked high and low for it, but I must not be searching for the right title or something. Just looking for a little help. :) I've about worn out the tape we have of it.
There is nothing "conventional" about the Oaks. They may be the most diverse singing group ever!
Thank you
Yes !!!

The only word that fits is Thanks
Lou was the best!!
Bubba, did I say they didn't like gospel music?
Are they still living?
@TimothyCow, Harold passed away in April of 2020, but Don, Phil, and Jimmy are still alive. Jimmy has a Solo Career now in Nashville, while Don is an accomplished Author of several books, and Phil still sings with their Church Choir.
