Not because he truly believes in anything he advocates (which is obvious), but because he's desperate to people please "the elites" in whichever group will pose him a personal advantage. 7:44 Catholicism definitely does NOT teach that Jesus was a sinner. They would consider even saying that to be blasphemy. They teach that Jesus was incapable of sinning. They also don’t teach the prosperity gospel. That’s more of an evangelical (kind of fringe) thing. I’m not a Catholic anymore but I was raised in a Catholic family and went to Catholic school. Edit: I should also mention that the prosperity gospel stuff is popular with the televangelists and if you want to learn more, John Oliver did a hilarious piece on them.
Yep. Catholics are very big on sin, even moreso than Protestant Evangelicals, but not their boy Jesus. I honestly can't think of any mainstream, modern Christian sect where Jesus anything but inhumanly perfect. Although that hasn't always been the case, you do have to go back at least a millenium I think to find a flawed character of Jesus. If you want a more humane version of Jesus, a really great interpretation is "Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal." Extremely funny, touching and almost bizarrely well researched.
Yeah Catholicism doesn’t preach the prosperity gospel… that’s the evangelists… it’s like one of the main reasons why I respect and support the Catholic doctrine.
Agreed, I definitely don't agree with all the doctrine of the Catholic Church, but I had to double take when she said that Jesus is considered a sinner.

Out of all the evil tech overlords, Thiel scares me the most. His hatred of women truly knows no bounds and he happens to own JD Vance so now Vance says and thinks whatever TF Thiel wants him to. Harris is by no means my ideal candidate, but I'm all in on getting her elected because the alternative is unthinkable. Also, I was born into a very catholic family and exclusively attended private catholic schools and can honestly attest to there being a link between the religion, authoritarianism AND eugenics. I don't know how to explain without writing a master's thesis but one example that is easier to focus on is the sect of catholism called "Opus Dei" which was created by an Italian priest in the 1930's that was aligned with Mussolini and fascism. This sect evolved into a kind of "secret order" in the US that is comparable to Yale's Skull & Bones Society. It's basically a secretive fraternity for really rich catholic men who want to take over the world. No joke. It's rumored all the Regan era, Heritage Foundation/Federalist Society asshats like Brett Kavanaugh, Neil Gorsuch, Scalia, Leonard Leo, etc... are card carrying members. Honestly, you just need to Google it from here because everything else about Opus Dei will sound like a giant conspiracy theory if I type it out, but I think it's important to get the word out where possible. This is a _much_ better take on the problematic elements of Catholicism than the one in the video because it's about actual problematic elements of the RCC rather than warmed-up, centuries-old anti-Catholic rhetoric. Opus Dei are a genuinely scary bunch with tentacles in a lot of places. Genuine true believers in what they see as _literally_ God's Work. Lifelong liberal Catholic, 12 years of Catholic school. The church is clear that church leadership is NOT to get involved in secular politics. There are as many (within margin of error) Democrat as there are Republican Catholics. We are told to consider the full picture when deciding how to vote our conscience. Vance converted in 2017, which is fine, but many recent converts are super fervent (ridged?) in a way that most Catholics are not. It annoys me that he is using his faith, my faith, to say and propose horrible things that will not serve people in the way he claims that they will. I could go on about details around actual support for children and families, but I'm just making the point as I felt this video was a touch negative and inaccurate regarding Catholicism. Not mad, just calling attention. I enjoy your informative videos.
Yeah, this is one of the first major things I’ve ever found that I think Leeja is missing some key information. Catholics Tend to be split down the middle, though the right wing of the church is definitely surging at the moment. I would say the two major camps are either your Joe Biden/Nancy Pelosi types, interested in the social justice teachings of the church (around helping the poor, finding humanity in the alienated, and promoting the common welfare), or the right wing camp whose views are difficult to sum up, but who seem very attached to the rules and traditions which make them feel special, powerful, or righteous. It can be difficult to say what truly motivates someone, especially as it pertains to faith, but I think much of the appeal for people like Vance, he likes the status, mythology, and history of the church; the (at times) bougie spectacle of mass; and the hierarchy and rules. Just typical authoritarian things. I’m sure there are other things as well, which attract him to the church, but as you mentioned, a lot of people who seem to convert as adults tend to be a lot more interested in a very rigid and specific interpretation of how things should work and what it is that you need to do to lead a righteous life. They may not have any chill, whereas many life long Catholics tend to be more moderate or very lax about the formalities. On that note, one particularly important distinction that the Catholic Church has as opposed to a lot of other denominations is that although professions of faith are important, more emphasis is put on action, the things you do, not just what you say. Now, whether or not that’s actually the case is another story, but this is what the church teaches. This is why I think a lot of right. Catholics are so interested in controlling other peoples behaviors, because it in theory should lead to their salvation, but I think it’s also kind of a tell that many of them think it will make it easier to Follow the righteous path themselves. Of course, the ones that they see most interested in policing are the things that have to do with one’s own being, not things like giving to the poor or helping the outcast. When fused with Republican politics, those aren’t your personal failings after. Saint Ronnie said so. Anyway, it would be interesting to have a deep dive into how Catholicism has become central to right wing politics, but Leeja is gonna need to do some homework on that. P.S. another interesting turn is how Catholics aren’t outcasts to the same extent they used to be for many devout evangelicals. I grew up Catholic in a town where most people were not. The tended to belong to the megachurch in town or some flavor of Baptist, Protestant, or non-denominational. Some Mormons as well, about the same number a Catholics I would say. I wouldn’t say I was exactly persecuted for being Catholic, but especially the megachurch had bones to pick with Catholics which came out in discussions with my peers. Of course Kennedy being elected was a big deal, but much of the voter base that helped with the southern strategy I would say would not have been happy if a Catholic moved in down the block. I also am not convinced such attitudes are necessarily gone, but if republicans ever gained sufficient power, Catholics as a who should be worried.
I grew up catholic, even got a minor in catholic studies. Your theory is spot on. Far too many people I grew up with are so radicalized it’s forced me even further away from my catholic identity. It’s terrifying.

Call them what you want, but they ain’t Christian. It isn’t Christian to seek worldly power and wealth and to oppress people. In fact, that’s what the Bible says the wolves (false teachers) and the wicked do. The church doesn’t claim them unless they repent and stop what they’re doing to people.

Thanks for this background on Vance. Just as a note, I grew up Catholic, and left the church for many reasons, but the people in our extended family who evangelized weren't the Catholics, but the Baptists. I think evangelizing is basically something that occupies all Christian denominations, just not every person in every denomination or church.
Evangelizing can take many different forms. Evangelical Protestants, like Baptists, admonish their members to evangelize, usually in conjunction with grass roots level of institutional evangelism. So the church encourages their members to bring their friends on Sunday, they have youth groups, often run by volunteers etc. The Catholic Church takes a more systemic or institutional form of evangelism. They go to new place (country, neighborhood, or whatever) and actually fund the building of a church, staff it with both priests and lay people, and then get members in through large scale outreach such as soup kitchens and schools. So Protestant evangelism depends on individual congregants to do the heavy lifting while Catholicism takes a more top down, hierarchal/institutional approach. Catholicism is the fastest growing Christian sect in the world, but they aren't doing by telling individual lay members to preach at their neighbours, so it isn't _perceived_ as being as Evangelical.
@@CorwinFound Thank you for that elaboration of "evangelism." That fits with my experience, and although I recognized the historical and modern advancement of Catholicism through such "expansions" I've mostly thought of it as a kind of invasion, rather than evangelism. However, it makes perfect sense to classify it as a different form of evangelizing. That helps me to better articulate the concept. :)
@@sylvanwoods5271 And of course that's just my opinion. And your comment on seeing Catholic expansion efforts as an invasion is also very apt. Evangelism is inextricably linked with colonialism, racism, misogyny and just about every other ism out there. I'm in Canada and the harm done historically by evangelizing Christians is beyond words. The residential school system, largely run by the Catholic and Anglican churches, was evangelical, colonial, and genocidal all at once. As much as having a Jehovah's Witness knocking on my door is an annoying form of evangelizing, the systemic evangelizing that has and continues to happen is far more damaging.
@@CorwinFound I totally agree. The worldwide harm has been, and continues to be untenable. Here in the US it's similar to what happened in Canada. It's pretty horrifying to see what people do in the name of their God. I hope we outgrow it before it destroys us or takes us back to the Dark Ages.
@@CorwinFoundIn my country the catholic church was involved in teaching people to write, it has schools, it's also involved with charities, like 90% of all the rehab centers and programs in my country are run by religious organisations, often the catholic church, AA programs are often run by the catholic church, they have psychological services, they feed the homeless, all things that serve a double purpose, salvation and conversion.

The Republicans want to go on and on about DEI hires and how everything should be merit based and you shouldn't see race but JD Vance doesn't even have that much experience.
I was raised Catholic (now a secular humanist) and my experience was very different than what I see today. It seems like converts to Catholicism are much more conservative and aligned with evangelical ideals and as more secular and moderate people drift away, the conservatives are taking over. This is probably true in many Protestant sects as well. Catholicism doesn’t share the same view of other groups that you can do what you want, ask for forgiveness, embrace Jesus and get a free card to heaven. You do bad on earth, you will be sent to purgatory for an unknown amount of time. Unfortunately they also think that is where all the unbaptized babies go (head shake). The forced conversion and history of wealth hoarding is all spot on. Terrible history of forced native conversions and child abduction across the world. But there was a strong element of social justice and doing good in the world in my experience growing up in the Jesuit college I attended. So Catholicism is very mixed and Vance is no representative.
Right like how do they fundamentally misunderstand the fact that socialism and a communist ideology that has not fallen to authoritarianism is required for those situations?
@@Shwee113Not sure how that’s odd. The question ‘Why are there six Catholic Supreme Court justices?’ is odd. Clarence Thomas didn’t seem to face discrimination for being Catholic, and in America, being Catholic shouldn’t be a discriminating factor in becoming a Supreme Court judge.

The fact that there have been 8 Jewish justices in the history of the Court is way more unusual and non-representative of the population, but it shouldn’t matter. Supreme Court justices were never expected to be representative of the nation’s demographics, especially religious demographics. As far as they knew, nothing they could do was going to help, due to factors outside their control, so why bother trying?
I am both pro and averse to Catholicism. I was raised in the Catholic church. I never experienced any kind of abuse. I always shuddered when other Christian denominations didn't consider Catholics to be Christian. On the averse side, the parish priest sometimes acted as if the church property was theirs and theirs alone. I even remember Latin mass and thinking what good is this if no one understands. Thomas Jefferson was especially suspicious of the Catholic Church due to its hierarchy. That hierarchy is not compatible with a democracy. At any rate, I no longer attend any Church. While I like 'Papa Frank, these authoritarian tendencies are something to be mindful of with these politicians.
I guess this would depend on the reason they don’t want to, but maybe try inviting them to go with you and do it together and make it a fun hangout ! (: xoxo.

Wish you had a more solidified background of Catholicism. When it interferes in man made institutions like politics, it can absolutely corrupt even Catholic individuals. It pains me to see people of the Catholic faith engage in bad faith discussion and not try to embrace their weaknesses. It goes against striving to be Christlike. I can already anticipate comments back about this and I truly get it. But seeing faith weaponized for political control and gain is the most depressing part about the striving for truth
It's like these guys never studied the dark ages where we had megalomaniac Lords with little fiefdoms competing with each other, with all the regular people and peasants suffering the consequences of the pissing contests that the landholding class was engaged in.
This is correct about Catholicism.

Why do you subscribe to a denomination that won't allow female priests?
@@LeftatalbuquerqueHuh? We have nuns, and they're awesome. Why do you care what my faith is?
We had Catholic social justice class which was pretty cool
I grew up catholic, even got a minor in catholic studies. Your theory is spot on. Far too many people I grew up with are so radicalized it’s forced me even further away from my catholic identity. It’s terrifying.

I feel Leeja has slowly moved from giving honest analysis from her point of view. (which was great) Now, as she produces more and more rapid content, it seems to be losing that honesty and going down the path of satiating her viewers desires and confirming their biases -- me included. I'm suspect a video on Kamala will merely be a Harris campaign ad. Will she note things like Kamala standing with every cop that killed unarmed black people or her unwavering position on Israel? Maybe we'll see the old Leeja again, but increased viewership requires change to build followers and keep everyone watching. That change is almost always a detrimental to the original strengths.

Can we all agree that monopolists are psychopaths

Every Accusation they make is a confession of their crimes it seems.
Though it might sound too obvious by now, they don't care about meritocracy, only about (white) color.

@@frettychervil that's an odd thing to say about Clarence Thomas
@@Shwee113Not sure how that’s odd. The question ‘Why are there six Catholic Supreme Court justices?’ is odd. Clarence Thomas didn’t seem to face discrimination for being Catholic, and in America, being Catholic shouldn’t be a discriminating factor in becoming a Supreme Court judge.
@@frettychervilit's not odd, because they are not a representation of a society that is largely protestant.
It's not about discrimination, it's about representation, is over represented in comparison to the population.
@@bluester7177 Catholicism is the largest single denomination of Christianity in the US. Also it's American not to see religious affiliation as a factor in the job. The fact that there have been 8 Jewish justices in the history of the Court is way more unusual and non-representative of the population, but it shouldn’t matter. Supreme Court justices were never expected to be representative of the nation’s demographics, especially religious demographics. The branch of government that is least expected to be representative of the US population is the judiciary, which should focus on qualifications and judicial philosophy.

I see how you get there, but the term comes from psychological experiments with dogs: once the dogs realized they had no way to avoid being given an electric shock, they would simply lie down and stop trying.

Jesus Christ wasn't a sinner according to any Christian doctrine. Its kinda like the whole point of the entire religion
