I love Grim Reaper - it's new ground genre-wise for the boys but the drums, guitar, baglama and flute all sound distinctly like FMB, while the production sounds a lot like Sketches. I see Omnium Gatherum as a nice summary of the first 10 years of King Gizz. It hits all the salient points, and even introduces some new elements. I think this album is really the sound of the band looking behind them for once, and seeing the footprints of all the distance they've already traveled. This is a rare thing for a band that charges ahead with as much speed and vigor as King Gizz does. Maybe we can expect this sort of retrospective every so often from this band.

I can respect this take on the album. While I really enjoy all the tracks on this one a lot, I can see how some of them could be forgettable to people who aren't as invested into King Gizz as someone like me is. I don't yet know where to place it within my ranking of their albums, as I don't think it stands up to their most conceptual work like Infest The Rats' Nest, Polygondwanaland, Murder of the Universe, Flying Microtonal Banana, or Nonagon Infinity. However, Omnium Gatherum has so many great songs that I can't help but think its still gonna rank pretty highly for me. If I had to make a prediction, I think it will go down as one of their best albums when it comes to casual listening, I think the diverse yet flowing and cohesive nature of the album really lends itself to that. Feeling an 8/10 on this one (for context, I think ITRN, Poly, and MOTU are all 10s).

I think this is a super fair review. I personally have been loving the record, but the point about it dipping off in the second half is super valid. It definitely feels like a celebration of them being back to recording irl, and the fun for sure carries onto the record. I will say that out of all of their more compilation ish albums (this, oddments, Gumboot) I feel this is the best. It's a great jumping off point for people looking to get into the band, as there's so much solid material to introduce you to their different eras. I'd probably say Sadie sorceress is probably my favorite track, I absolutely love the energy of it. Dripping tap is also incredible, but I understand if people who aren't into jammier stuff don't like it. Great review Anthony, I was responsible for a 16 car accident that killed 20 in 1995.

Yeah, was expecting a slightly higher score and I disagree about some of the finer details (The Garden Goblin and Candles are both absolutely fantastic) but I wholeheartedly agree about the general review; it’s the band’s bookmark statement of “Okay, we’re ten years and twenty albums in, here’s everything we’ve done so far” and in that sentiment I think it works perfectly. However, some of the tracks are definitely a little underbaked- Ambergris, Red Smoke, and The Funeral are all pretty forgettable. It’s got enough highlights though to still make it quintessential Gizzard record, and the sheer number of styles and genres that they managed to cram onto this album is really impressive. Would probably give it a 7 or 8, it’s a strong, all-be-it scatterbrained and sometimes forgettable, Gizz project

I think this is a very fair review/rating. Yes, this album is incredibly varied and is well-produced, and the boys deserve props for continuing to explore new genres and styles, but for me so many of the songs are not up to the standards of the better Gizzard albums in terms of writing and arrangements. Plus, it's needlessly bloated and I feel that they could have easily worked some of these tracks more and saved them for future releases. Still, some highlights in the first part of the album, and I still love King Gizzard and will be looking forward to whatever they put out next.

I completely agree with your closing point. This album almost feels as though King Gizzard is closing out a particular chapter of their collective careers with a massive gathering of the sounds and themes they've been doing for a decade now. Divorced from the rest of the catalog it would be weird and disjointed, but in the greater context of what these six musicians have done, it becomes a statement piece about their music as a whole.

I think I might be getting Gizzard fatigue. It’s always great to have a prolific artist have a solid discography but after a while I feel like “Oh a new album I’ll get around to checking it out!” and then I kinda never do because the next is out. It happened with Ty Segall and Oh Sees as well. Definitely more of a personal thing and I’m glad other people can digest their stuff at such a steady pace.

But this album seems like its almost new territory. They dip into kind of soul like vibes in dripping tap and here and there it reminds me of 70s Stevie Wonder.
