Hey Ellis, great video. We have a local game in Orkney called the Ba. In it's present form it dates back to the 1850s. The Ba is played every Christmas Day and New Years Day (unless it falls on a Sunday, then it is played on the Monday). There's a boys Ba and a mens Ba. The boys Ba starts at 10:00am and the men's Ba starts at 1:00pm, the Ba is thrown up at the Cathedral. Theres 2 sides called the 'Uppies' and the 'Doonies'. The Uppies have to get the ball to the gable end of a house where a castle used to be and the Doonies have to get the Ba to the harbour. The game ends once the ba either reaches the wall or the harbour and a winner is decided by spectators and players shouting out names, the winner gets to keep the Ba. The boy's Ba is for boy's aged 17 and younger. Local businesses and houses have to put up barriers to prevent damage as the game can get very rough because there's no rules. It's a great tradition and I would love it if you'd like to come and watch it
I went to Atherstone for the ball game in 2018. It was absolutely insane. Before the start a local told me if the ball comes near me, do not catch it. I soon saw why.
Definitely need to look into 'Uppies and Downies' played in Workington, Cumbria. It's like this but there are goals you have to get to at each end and played in two teams
I worked in Atherstone for a couple of decades, at one point my office was opposite the window where the ball was thrown from. Never took part in the game.
The plywood over the shop windows reminds me of Florida, where I live. Either boarding up your windows for a hurricane or , in certain areas, you’ll see plywood up year round so other certain people can’t see inside your house.
Loved the vid. Probably watched 10 more about "mob football" since this one. Atherstone rules and Ashbourne rules. Thought Calcio Fiorentino was crazy - but love when the whole town participates! Really like your content. Watched many of your videos - the fun ones and the personal ones, and as a fifty something year old, I think you are a wise and gifted young man. Got a lot going for you. Keep up the great work. Like all the interaction with your friends on your trips too. Building great memories. Respect from the US of A.
@@benooo3863 lmao, it's not Ellis. It's TH-cam. It got age restricted meaning a lot less views because it wouldn't show in algorithm. This question begs to be answered, who in the hell thought this was a good idea way back when and how did this start? LOL. Very British and very entertaining to watch. Thanks Ellis, glad you and Ed didn't get trampled!!
Ellis at some point you need to travel to Florence, Italy to watch the "Calcio Storico Fiorentino". It's a violent variant of football that's taken place in Florence since the middle ages.
That is one of the unique things that make England. We love a good scrap and pointless ball game. I say let the locals have it, it's all good fun. If they do try banning it the locals would still do it but it'll just become a scrap on the streets that aren't closed and no first aid attendance. It'll be a lot worse.
You need to check out Calcio Storico in Florence, definitely more dangerous but it is at least contained in a pitch. Its absolutely insane, also has the no murdering rule
Search uppies and downies… another ball game in Cumbria in the UK. Very similar concept that goes on over the Easter period… worth a watch for the experience!!
As you are planning on staying in England more for away days A match at London oldest ground Clapton cfc Sheffield fc the oldest football team in world And perhaps a match in Scotland Example Inverness or Nairn county 😊
Not a ball game i know but theres a place in Devon that has an annual event where people carry a flaming barrel on their back down the street, also seems needlessly dangerous but the locals love it 😂 love british traditions
@@jamiecovfefe6323 There are 4 variations of this type of game played in Europe. This version, one in Workington Cumbria England , one in Florence Italy & one in Gorgia The County not American State. I'd love to see you look into East German football, particular the teams that were in the old top division before reunification of Germany. Recently read a book called the The Turning Season on the subject. Really interesting.

This is naff compared to uppies and downies, held 3 games every year over easter. 2 sides of the town go to war with a goal at either end of the town. The only rule is there are no rules
The reason for the pancakes is because traditionally Christians are supposed to give up dairy/fats (butter) for Lent (the 40 days from Ash Wednesday to Easter), so making pancakes is a good way to use up those ingredients beforehand!
If only you did a little bit of research you would have known that the ribbons on the ball are worth money and that's why people fight for the ball from the start

This video was originally taken down for age restriction reasons so please support the re upload would mean a lot.

Why was it taken down
I’ll just watch it again then 😂

There are probably quite a few locals who are absolutely livid you got to touch the ball before the game haha

At least the one in Ashbourne they are actually trying to score

You should go to the traditional calcio game in Florence!
Nod to modern health and saftey they added no eye gouging or strangling.
