In the 80s, we used to play Murder Ball in PE, despite it being banned by the council. A gym mat at each end of the gym; a medicine ball in the middle; the class split into two teams; the *ONLY* rule was that you scored by getting the ball on the opposing team's mat.
We were still playing bulldog at our school in the early 2010s. We were lucky to have a large field and teachers who didn't give a shit so as long as you didn't start fighting.

Each ball is designed for the person throwing it up and hand painted. The paint wears of quickly though and soon becomes a large brown leather ball. On occasion, ‘duplicate ball’ have appeared but players can feel the difference so they are soon discarded.

It’s amazing how this game has been played every year between the North of the town and the South of the town for over 400 years. The Atherton Ball Game which is similar, has been played in the town every year for over 800 years. It’s crazy to think about.
More than 400. There was a fire in the 1890s which destroyed our earliest records, but the ones that do still exist date back to 1667, so I'd say we've been playing it for a good 500-600 years. Not even the World Wars could stop it from being played. In fact, only Foot and Mouth and Covid could stop it.
