    I'm banking on September being usually warm, and even as I say that Septembers in the UK are not necessarily cold or even cool given the August we've had. Fingers crossed for a September summer.

    What a wonderful exciting vlog. The plants look great. I adore your personality and commentary. Adorable, hilarious, relatable and genuine. I find myself saying some of the same stuff. I love the wild messy some coming and some going garden, this is my favorite time of year too. Aww, mister fox, robin, and Rocky all in one vlog ❤️❤️🥰❤️❤️

    How did you manage to keep the slugs off your cauliflower and direct them to just eat a few select ones? Did you cover the slug free ones?
    Usually slugs will just take everything. I had all my brassicas eaten this year not one was left, they even ate my radishes.

    Hi Emma, why don’t you try closing the polytunnel door to let the heat buildup. Loads of more experienced gardeners say toms need heat not light to ripen.

    Dearest Emma. I know it's discusting, but you really have to kill the slugs. They each can lay 400 eggs in a season. So there will be many many next year - sorry 😅

    Last year i had loads of tomatoes ripen but this year, like you, my first one was 5th September - and in the same polytunnel - so I think it is the weather - may be the rainy July?. Anyway, they are all ripening now thank goodness. Keep the videos coming Emma please - I love them.Also I have the same spider problem - I'm waving a stick too

    We live not much further north than you, we are just north of hertfordshire, all our tomatoes are green except for the indigo ones that are black on top with red underneath. Strange that up North even as far north as Northumberland Utubers are getting loads of ripe toms. Even Worcestshire they are ripening well. A couple of others who live in the London area are having the same problem as you. Good luck.

    Hi Emma, I am new to your channel and absolutely love it! It’s so encouraging to see someone else in their early years of learning to grow produce , learning through trial and errors. I am in my second year of learning to grow produce currently in my garden as I don’t have a allotment (I am considering getting one at some point or maybe just use my mum’s garden heehee)
    Anyway I want to comment on the Slug issue … although slugs (and their snail buddies) are a pain in the butt (you can never get rid of them completely)… they do have two good points 😳 1) they play a valuable part in the composting process 😁…so I relocate them to my compost bin (or I put them in my green waste bin when it’s green waste collection heehee) .
    2) some birds, frogs, toads, hedgehogs, slow worms and ground beetles eat them 😁 so I attract birds to my garden such feeding station, grow teasel & sunflowers and wildly grown blackberries etc (I haves fruit cage to prevent birds getting the raspberries & strawberries) , I have a mini wildlife pond (there are 1 or 2 toads in my garden and they definitely eat snails…evidence of empty shells of where I found a toad 😁)
    Look forward to your next video 😁

    • @emmasallotmentdiaries
      @emmasallotmentdiaries  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much! I’m always looking for more advice on how to tackle slugs (they are my biggest pest by far) so I really appreciate your comment! Will definitely start throwing them into the compost and also thinking about how I can attract more wildlife that eat them to the plot. Thanks so much and glad you are enjoying my channel ☺️

  • @bluumz-n-veg

    Overfed tomatoes, ie: too much nitrogen, won't turn red, either. Nitrogen is the main thing in the liquid tomato fertilizer I've seen you use and it seems that you usually use more than the recommended dosage, LOL! So you may have too much nitrogen in your soil. If that is the problem, you won't be able to do much this year. Mulch heavily, let the soil rest, and try again next year. Just one thing to consider. 🙂
    Thanks for another fab video, I love your gardening attitude!

There is a very good chance that the weather will be warm until December (first frost was in December last year, I had Nasturtiums and Calendula in full bloom until the first frost then the snow that followed), let those tomatos ripen!! Everytime I eat a banana the skin goes into a jug. I pop warm water on it. Leave it to soak overnight. Syphon liquid into a bottle and pour it over my tomatoes at the allotment. Has worked well this season. Don't have a poly-tunnel and the tomatoes were twice knocked down in storms during the summer but just restaked them and they are producing oodles. Next season am going to do a pumpkin arch like yours. It's so sweet !

    Both my polytunnels are green and they're full of ripe tomatoes. There's nothing wrong with your tunnel. I grew mine really early and got them in the first chance I could. Which I think was a fair few weeks before yourself. Maybe experiment with sowing times? I did a few super early and some around average sowing time. Hope this helps for next year xx

    • @wordsbymaribeja1470
      @wordsbymaribeja1470 ปีที่แล้ว

      I sowed mine early this year, 5th February instead of 5th March, and I won't be doing it again, but maybe it can work if you have a green house or polytunnel (I'm in London). I have neither so was reliant on the weather warming up before being able to relocate my plants outside. I had to keep them on the grow mat, when they were far too big, to ensure the plant got the nutrients from the compost because the ambient temperature, even indoors, was too cold. I initially hardened my toms too early, and had to bring them back inside after trying to put them outside from the end of March. By the time the weather was good enough for them to go out, they were in a poor state but recovered well but I just didn't make any gains from the earlier sowing times.

    There’s nothing worse that when there’s a surprise insect in your glove, maybe try wearing latex/disposable gloves under the gardening gloves! 😄 extra layer of protection too maybe ha, I love you vlogs so much Emma and have been watching for ages, iv just finally been offered a half plot after waiting over a year, so excited to start work on it next week, it’s quite a state, but clearing it all a bit at a time is gonna be half the fun! Thanks for all your tips, your videos always make me smile! I love your allotment! Thanks for being here! 😎👌💚

      @@emmasallotmentdiaries thank you so much, it’s very over grown but it’s going to be fun planning it all out as well, it has a little shed which is fab and a big apple tree at the bottom as well which is such a bonus. I’m so so excited! Just waiting to get the keys 😄no worries, I literally watch your channel every night and have rewatched certain videos many times. Keep up to amazing work, thanks for everything! x

    Emma I sent you a link fromFlorret with their Cayuga ducks to eat snails and slugs I’ve seen many allotments with chickens will yours let you have ducks you’ll need a whole cube of hardware cloth so the fox doesn’t dig under.😊

    So amazing to see the fox so tame, I would definitely be bringing it food , I have foxes in the field next to my garden and it’s lovely when they play together. Of course anyone with chickens will need to make sure they are securely locked up. I’d rather watch the fox or the robin or Rocky than those horrid slimy slugs. Congratulations on your lovely cauliflower though.

      Have you cut back your leaves? I cut back my leaves about 4 weeks ago and my tomatos started rippening within the week, slowly, but I've had to large harvests now and have been dehydrating the tomatos over the 2 weeks. I see another 2 large harvests for tomatoes that are due to ripen over the next fortnight.
