Hi 🖐 - the wood edging to the roof will help stop the wind from getting under the roofing felt and lifting it during very windy weather. and it looks nice 🙂🙂 - don't be too quick to get rid of all that wood, I was about to suggest laying some down to edge the beds to keep the compost from spreading and you beat me to it.. Great minds think alike. - if the back of the shed remains wet/damp after you have fixed the water pipe leaks it might be an idea to dig a shallow trench and fill it with rocks/stones/gravel to create a soak way so that water doesn't stand against the back wall - you have made such good progress on the plot it's beginning to take shape - tiny plot at home is looking a little bear at the moment but i can't wait to see how thing develop - having the greenhouse at home is a good decision as when it starts getting hotter and the seedlings start to grown, they will need a lot of TLC and its much easier to do that from home Keep up the good work 👍👍
Ah so that is what the edging I'd for, thank you, Carol! I did look into digging a trench, and then I saw a load of people back filling it with concrete and that felt to permanent! I didn'realise rock and stone were an alternative! The tiny garden is a little quiet at the minute, not for too much longer I hope! Oh wow that is sooooo exciting!!! It's going to be the perfect oasis! It was never really in the plans, but I have learned the importance of a covered space, I saw so many peoples tomatos thrive last year during the early blight simply because they had a covered area!

An extra wide lean to type I think would be epic (like the half greenhouses) as you could have it against the window, it would still let light in the house but you could open your window into the greenhouse and look at all your lovely plants on crappy days from inside!!! Just a thought lol.

Hi Laura, another good video and also encompassing your original garden at home, well done. Your shed should be fairly easy to lift up to level it out with the help of 2 men and a length of timber screws through the joists of that back wall and extending past its edges by approx 2 foot. the 2 men can then use the piece of timber as handles to lift it up while you put a stone or soil underneath.. A greenhouse would be a good addition for the likes of your tomatoes, peppers, chillis etc. Keep the videos coming, the plot is really coming on now in the small amount of time that you have had it 👍

I haven't started my brassicas yet, my bed for those won't be ready for a while so decided not to do any spring/summer ones. I've kicked out the sweet peas, salad and onions today to get some real fresh air 🙈 Seed sowing starts in full swing this week now! @@thetinygarden_ oh, I started tomaties and peppers earlier than ever and glad I did. Ive done a second sowing and probably need a third sowing of some. The seeds are pure lately. I might put the broad beans out in yhe daytime to harden them off. Just took a delivery of Pink Panther onion sets from Amazon. I put them in seed trays until they look a bit pot bound and then they gonout...somewhere, not ready with beds yet. Do try them out, they are gorgeous.

If your roof keeps leaking, try using bitumen paint on it to seal it off. The felt on my allotment shed was letting water through it last year, and one coat sorted it
I love watching both your allotment and your tiny garden. I think people with small gardens can relate to your small garden and people with bigger kitchen garden can relate with your allotment. Either way, you make it look so easy but I know it’s hard work.. by the way I love your eyes! They are so huge and pretty with lovely long lashes ❤

I'm 99 % sure I'll have an allotment at the beginning of April. The new year is April but may be changing to February, they told me im on top of the list and usually, on average, 10 people a year give up their allotments, fingers crossed 😊. I'm trying to get my garden organised and finished before April. I've sown so many seeds this week.

I have started off a good few seeds now, its been pretty mild this winter don't you think? (no snow here anyway!) Last frost for me is about 4 weeks so I panicked sowed a load of things and forgot how quickly lettuce germinates🤣I have everything crossed now for your new allotment 🤞🍀💚
Hopefully your onions will be ok, they do look good after surviving winter. A small greenhouse sounds perfect and being at home means you can keep an eye on watering easily. I am sure you will find a solution for the shed. Keeping a shady area on the plot is really important, great decision! 👍😘🌸💕

I really hope they work, such a cool thing to have growing away in the ground in winter and one less thing to be minding on the inside seed sowing bench! I think you need a lot of wood chip with roo 😂 The green house will be a great addition especially for tomato 🍅 wish i could send you one of carls chilli plants but doubt it would survive the trip 😂 Sweet peas are fantatix for a couple of weeks. Iv just added another blue berry bush im going to get another so i have 3 on the go. Ruben loves the chicken stix but he just eats the chixken and gives oscar the white thing its wrapped around.

@@thetinygarden_ the plot is looking great to loads of progress. And you know the plastic sheets you were talking about I seen someone do a greenhouse with them and it looked so cool. Basicly a wooden frame with them clear bumpy wavy sheets as the sides and roof.
You started the tomatoes already!! Your way ahead of me! I planted way to many of those pepper seeds, I didn't have much confidence they were old seeds from a shop bought pepper, nearly every last one germinated I have about 50 pepper plants 🤣 definitely going to make an effort to save seeds this year!
@@thetinygarden_ yes I have tiny to,atoes and the big salad ones I planter indoors ,they have come through and some I had to split as to many I had a 3rd pack of seeds but not planted yet ,will see how the others go first And I planted pepper seeds from ones we used I did last year the plants grew lovely but only got a couple of peppers from them and they were so small Hopefully urs will do better Good luck x
Because of the amount of rain we had , I went for wood chip paths as it was free on site and helps with suppressing the weeds , I was amazed by how much it helped in water absorption, other plots where flooding in parts , or mine reminded workable , like the idea of a polycarbonate roof if you completely removed the roof would give you some great light . Nice to see bit of tiny garden again . Keep up the great work .

I am trying to do my plot without spending any money and up-cycling as much as possible , anyone needing wood chip even if not free on the site , contact a local tree surgeon and if you make enough phone calls a busy one will be happy to drop u some off. Looking forward to day 9 :)

Sounds like she'd would be great for water catchment! Rain may have been directed to that corner and then a barrel or such there to catch it. Just more water than catching barrel.
I popped a small barrel on the back corner to see, it was only 50litres so only a teeny dent into the amount of water she can catch! But so much potential!
The bottom (front) of my garden is clay and gets watterlogged something terrible at this time of year. I made a path in front if the planters there with cardboard and straw and its helped massively. I think woodchip would be better but straw was what i had here already. So i think woodchip over cardboard could help with that back atea.
I always try to get away sending messages without my glasses on 🤣 I didn't even think of straw, and to hear it works with th water problem is really helpful, thank you 🥰
I love both your tiny home garden and the bigger allotment plot. I'm so addicted to your videos and style of filming and talking to camera that I've watched almost all your videos twice just in the last week or so 😁 You're so positive and cheerful. You tackle challenges head on, taking learnings along the way while seeing the best of the situation wherever you can. It's absolutely wonderful, and it reminds me of why I fell in love with gardening in the first place. I need to re-cultivate that kind of spirit in myself too. Whenever you have time for videos, I'm hanging out for them, but I can always re-watch older videos again in the meantime. 😁 I loved seeing progress both in Tiny Garden and Allotment in one, but I think splitting them might be easier to digest the content, so then people who want just Tiny Garden can easily follow those ones (especially if you set them up as separate play lists on your channel), and those who want allotment can follow along easily with allotment videos. The rest of us who want to devour ALL the content you make can watch every single video as TH-cam notifies us of it 😂 My sister and parents rent a house with a much smaller amount of garden space than me, and I will confess that your Tiny Garden makes me think of ways that they could really maximise their gardening space, but also for how I can deal with the narrow garden space down the sides of my house. Then your allotment is starting from 'greenfields' essentially and you're building it up which something I need to do with a few spots of mine as well, and you've got slightly bigger plans for those which suit the larger garden beds in my front and backyards. Truly, Laura, you're an inspiration. I admire your dedication, enthusiasm and hard work! Above all, keep on growing! ❤

Nope I totally get the rippled roof and a great idea. Can you make a trench at the back of the shed to drain away the water and perhaps fill it with rough gravel? If those connectors are not unplugged in winter they crack so you may need new ones. Definitely getting there Laura and hey one bed on an allotment to grow in is better than none ❤. @@thetinygarden_ Laura, the word you are looking for is " corrugated " corrugated plastic roofing sheets, the only downside to that is when it rains the sound is amplified inside the shed.
Bi weekly videos please! Keep on as you were with your tiny garden and do additional video of your allotment. Much easier for me to carve out time to watch 2 15, 20 or 30 min videos as opposed to 1 30 or 40 or 60 minute one with 2 topics.
Another great vid Laura, with regard to your shed and the water ingress I have found over the years the best way is to level up 4" solid concrete building blocks laid flat side down to support 9 x 3 treated timbers aprox 24" to 30" apart then site the shed on these, you will gave a constant air flow under the shed to keep it nice and dry and rodents won't nest underneath, hope this is of some use to you. How long is your growing season? It is exciting watching you get your garden ready for planting. It has been years since I’ve gotten a new area ready for gardening. I have reduced my planting area in the past years.

The season for me usually runs from mid March and then winds down towards septemeber/October We have mild winters and I hope that with the new allotment space I can stretch the season and over winter crops like garlic onions and cabbage 🥬🤞

Ohhh, Laura! The color on those "Wild Italian" sweet peas is simply gorgeous! *So* beautiful! I shall be so happy to see these flowers when they bloom for you. You will include them in some future video, I'm hoping. Yes? About the shed roof.... I've been unable to determine, just from looking, two things about your shed: 1) does the roof overhang the top/s of the wall/s and 2) is there ("are there"?) fascia boards where the roof and walls meet? I'm sorry if I've missed something completely obvious and that both of those features are there in fact and I'm just not perceiving them. Something else I was wondering about is whether the water butt you have will accommodate all of the runoff from the shed roof. The formula for calculating roof runoff volume (in U.S. customary measure, not metric, I'm afraid) follows: Determine the area of the roof *in inches.* (Total all roof surface/s.) Multiply the roof area (in inches) by the inches of rainfall in a year. (Use an established average from the last 10, 20 or 30 years. In my area, our average rainfall is 38 inches per annum.) Multiply that number by 0.62. That is the volume of rainwater, in [U.S.] gallons, coming off your shed's roof. Assuming for the sake of discussion and perhaps some planning that you never have to tap any water from the "catch" for your garden, will that container hold a year's worth of runoff? (Include snowmelt, by the way.) Much gardening love from Northeast Ohio, U.S.A. 😊💚💚💚😊
I will of course, keep you updated! I did kick the sweet peas out side today for a few hours and two of them got caught and their stems bent in half 😳 I think the walls and roof are flush with one another, I do have fascias around the trim of the roof so the join should technically be covered. Well I never knew there was a calculation for such a thing, and it was only after I got home I realised that the water butt at home wouldn't be big enough to service the space, let alone catch all the rain! It is going to be worth taking a minute to calculate the potential run off so thank you very much! It rarely snows so that makes things slightly easier 😅 ❄️🤍
@@thetinygarden_ Oh, noes! Flower stems! 😢 If I'm not mistaken, the roof-wall join has to be covered by the roof, which in turn means some overhang on all four elevations of the structure. I don't know how much overhang is required although on my house it has got to be at least ten inches I knew that there is such a calculation because of something (don't recall what, by now) to do with my house and the amount of runoff from the roof and the average amount of water per average rainfall or rainstorm seemed prodigious. (H'mm...may have had to do with wanting to set up water barrels at the back of the house to collect rainwater for the garden: how many we'd need and how to set up a DIY passing-it-on multiple barrel system, but I don't believe that's it. I seem to remember that this had something to do with the roof itself....) All I had to do was Google it, and the formula I passed on to you is the one Google provided. Ooh: something else has come to mind. Is the roof of your shed hung from the walls, or supported from underneath by the walls? It does make a difference, and if the roofing paper or rolled roofing is tucked between roof and wall at any point it will direct water inward. One thing you can be sure of when it comes to water: if there is an opening, just one water molecule big, that molecule will find its way into the opening. Where one water molecule goes, another will follow. And then another. And another, and another after that, and one more and then more and more until they're marching in two-by-two, and eventually they become a thin trickle. The trickle becomes a bigger trickle. And already we're past the point of avoiding damage before it happens. If the trickling goes on long enough it can actually erode the wood (or other substance, such as stone or brick or concrete) and make itself a bigger pathway to allow even more water to get in. On that sort of glum note, I wish you much gardening love from Ohio, U.S.A. 😊💚💚💚💚💚😊
Hi Laura, I think all your videos are awesome, but if people want tiny garden only, you could always film it all (like this video) but then split it into two uploads per week, one for tiny garden updates and one for allotment updates. For examples, this video was 22 min long, instead of one upload per week, you could release two shorter ones. I love it all, so I don’t do it because I said so, it’s just for consideration if you find that lots of people only care for one of the gardening spaces.

Great idea for an under cover space in the tiny garden. Since the pole is cemented in...anyway to use it to your advantage as an anchoring device, or is it just placed wrong to help? Woodchip will definitely help in the soggy area. Love this format of whatever you are up to at the moment.

Glass would be the cheapest option for a greenhouse but with your dog (mad like ours) then polycarb would be safer. rather than trying to angle grind that tube out could you not incorporate it into the grow house to aid stability? especially if you have one of the cheap blow away types.. good to see the progress though.

I remember pinching out my first ever peppers and I felt SO guilty 😅 we are quite mild during winter typically it will be around 0-5 degrees and with less than an hand full of hard frost that usually clear by midday! This 🤩 I love a good garden map. I've drawn dozens for my gardens over the years - rarely follow my own plans quite as diligently as I've drawn them though 😂 But it's fascinating to see what ideas a gardener has about their space and how it evolves over time 😁

- the wood edging to the roof will help stop the wind from getting under the roofing felt and lifting it during very windy weather. and it looks nice 🙂🙂
- don't be too quick to get rid of all that wood, I was about to suggest laying some down to edge the beds to keep the compost from spreading and you beat me to it.. Great minds think alike.
- if the back of the shed remains wet/damp after you have fixed the water pipe leaks it might be an idea to dig a shallow trench and fill it with rocks/stones/gravel to create a soak way so that water doesn't stand against the back wall
- you have made such good progress on the plot it's beginning to take shape
- tiny plot at home is looking a little bear at the moment but i can't wait to see how thing develop
- having the greenhouse at home is a good decision as when it starts getting hotter and the seedlings start to grown, they will need a lot of TLC and its much easier to do that from home

Oh wow that is sooooo exciting!!! It's going to be the perfect oasis! It was never really in the plans, but I have learned the importance of a covered space, I saw so many peoples tomatos thrive last year during the early blight simply because they had a covered area!

An extra wide lean to type I think would be epic (like the half greenhouses) as you could have it against the window, it would still let light in the house but you could open your window into the greenhouse and look at all your lovely plants on crappy days from inside!!! Hi Laura, another good video and also encompassing your original garden at home, well done. Your shed should be fairly easy to lift up to level it out with the help of 2 men and a length of timber screws through the joists of that back wall and extending past its edges by approx 2 foot. the 2 men can then use the piece of timber as handles to lift it up while you put a stone or soil underneath.. A greenhouse would be a good addition for the likes of your tomatoes, peppers, chillis etc. Keep the videos coming, the plot is really coming on now in the small amount of time that you have had it 👍

If your roof keeps leaking, try using bitumen paint on it to seal it off. The felt on my allotment shed was letting water through it last year, and one coat sorted it

I'm 99 % sure I'll have an allotment at the beginning of April. The new year is April but may be changing to February, they told me im on top of the list and usually, on average, 10 people a year give up their allotments, fingers crossed 😊.

I have started off a good few seeds now, its been pretty mild this winter don't you think? (no snow here anyway!) Last frost for me is about 4 weeks so I panicked sowed a load of things and forgot how quickly lettuce germinates🤣I have everything crossed now for your new allotment 🤞🍀💚
Hopefully your onions will be ok, they do look good after surviving winter. A small greenhouse sounds perfect and being at home means you can keep an eye on watering easily. I am sure you will find a solution for the shed. Keeping a shady area on the plot is really important, great decision! 👍😘🌸💕

I planted way to many of those pepper seeds, I didn't have much confidence they were old seeds from a shop bought pepper, nearly every last one germinated I have about 50 pepper plants 🤣 definitely going to make an effort to save seeds this year!

Because of the amount of rain we had , I went for wood chip paths as it was free on site and helps with suppressing the weeds , I was amazed by how much it helped in water absorption, other plots where flooding in parts , or mine reminded workable , like the idea of a polycarbonate roof if you completely removed the roof would give you some great light . Nice to see bit of tiny garden again . Keep up the great work .

I am trying to do my plot without spending any money and up-cycling as much as possible , anyone needing wood chip even if not free on the site , contact a local tree surgeon and if you make enough phone calls a busy one will be happy to drop u some off. Looking forward to day 9 :)

I popped a small barrel on the back corner to see, it was only 50litres so only a teeny dent into the amount of water she can catch! But so much potential!

The bottom (front) of my garden is clay and gets watterlogged something terrible at this time of year. I made a path in front if the planters there with cardboard and straw and its helped massively. I think woodchip would be better but straw was what i had here already. So i think woodchip over cardboard could help with that back atea.

I loved seeing progress both in Tiny Garden and Allotment in one, but I think splitting them might be easier to digest the content, so then people who want just Tiny Garden can easily follow those ones (especially if you set them up as separate play lists on your channel), and those who want allotment can follow along easily with allotment videos.
The rest of us who want to devour ALL the content you make can watch every single video as TH-cam notifies us of it 😂
My sister and parents rent a house with a much smaller amount of garden space than me, and I will confess that your Tiny Garden makes me think of ways that they could really maximise their gardening space, but also for how I can deal with the narrow garden space down the sides of my house.
Then your allotment is starting from 'greenfields' essentially and you're building it up which something I need to do with a few spots of mine as well, and you've got slightly bigger plans for those which suit the larger garden beds in my front and backyards.
Truly, Laura, you're an inspiration. I admire your dedication, enthusiasm and hard work! Above all, keep on growing! ❤

Nope I totally get the rippled roof and a great idea. Can you make a trench at the back of the shed to drain away the water and perhaps fill it with rough gravel? If those connectors are not unplugged in winter they crack so you may need new ones. Definitely getting there Laura and hey one bed on an allotment to grow in is better than none ❤. I’m not sure if you watch Martin at the Hanley Plot he had horrible issues with flooding and made small well canals along his beds omg the drainage difference was amazing

Another great vid Laura, with regard to your shed and the water ingress I have found over the years the best way is to level up 4" solid concrete building blocks laid flat side down to support 9 x 3 treated timbers aprox 24" to 30" apart then site the shed on these, you will gave a constant air flow under the shed to keep it nice and dry and rodents won't nest underneath, hope this is of some use to you. How long is your growing season? It is exciting watching you get your garden ready for planting. It has been years since I’ve gotten a new area ready for gardening. I have reduced my planting area in the past years.

We have mild winters and I hope that with the new allotment space I can stretch the season and over winter crops like garlic onions and cabbage 🥬🤞

About the shed roof.... I've been unable to determine, just from looking, two things about your shed: 1) does the roof overhang the top/s of the wall/s and 2) is there ("are there"?) fascia boards where the roof and walls meet? I'm sorry if I've missed something completely obvious and that both of those features are there in fact and I'm just not perceiving them.
Something else I was wondering about is whether the water butt you have will accommodate all of the runoff from the shed roof.
The formula for calculating roof runoff volume (in U.S. customary measure, not metric, I'm afraid) follows:
Determine the area of the roof *in inches.* (Total all roof surface/s.)
Multiply the roof area (in inches) by the inches of rainfall in a year. (Use an established average from the last 10, 20 or 30 years. In my area, our average rainfall is 38 inches per annum.)
Multiply that number by 0.62.
That is the volume of rainwater, in [U.S.] gallons, coming off your shed's roof.
Assuming for the sake of discussion and perhaps some planning that you never have to tap any water from the "catch" for your garden, will that container hold a year's worth of runoff? (Include snowmelt, by the way.)

I think the walls and roof are flush with one another, I do have fascias around the trim of the roof so the join should technically be covered.
Well I never knew there was a calculation for such a thing, and it was only after I got home I realised that the water butt at home wouldn't be big enough to service the space, let alone catch all the rain! It is going to be worth taking a minute to calculate the potential run off so thank you very much! It rarely snows so that makes things slightly easier 😅 ❄️🤍

If I'm not mistaken, the roof-wall join has to be covered by the roof, which in turn means some overhang on all four elevations of the structure. I don't know how much overhang is required although on my house it has got to be at least ten inches
I knew that there is such a calculation because of something (don't recall what, by now) to do with my house and the amount of runoff from the roof and the average amount of water per average rainfall or rainstorm seemed prodigious. (H'mm...may have had to do with wanting to set up water barrels at the back of the house to collect rainwater for the garden: how many we'd need and how to set up a DIY passing-it-on multiple barrel system, but I don't believe that's it. I seem to remember that this had something to do with the roof itself....)
All I had to do was Google it, and the formula I passed on to you is the one Google provided.
Ooh: something else has come to mind. Is the roof of your shed hung from the walls, or supported from underneath by the walls? It does make a difference, and if the roofing paper or rolled roofing is tucked between roof and wall at any point it will direct water inward.
One thing you can be sure of when it comes to water: if there is an opening, just one water molecule big, that molecule will find its way into the opening. Where one water molecule goes, another will follow. And then another. And another, and another after that, and one more and then more and more until they're marching in two-by-two, and eventually they become a thin trickle. The trickle becomes a bigger trickle. And already we're past the point of avoiding damage before it happens. If the trickling goes on long enough it can actually erode the wood (or other substance, such as stone or brick or concrete) and make itself a bigger pathway to allow even more water to get in.

Hi Laura, I think all your videos are awesome, but if people want tiny garden only, you could always film it all (like this video) but then split it into two uploads per week, one for tiny garden updates and one for allotment updates. For examples, this video was 22 min long, instead of one upload per week, you could release two shorter ones. I love it all, so I don’t do it because I said so, it’s just for consideration if you find that lots of people only care for one of the gardening spaces.

Great idea for an under cover space in the tiny garden. Since the pole is cemented in...anyway to use it to your advantage as an anchoring device, or is it just placed wrong to help?

Glass would be the cheapest option for a greenhouse but with your dog (mad like ours) then polycarb would be safer. rather than trying to angle grind that tube out could you not incorporate it into the grow house to aid stability? especially if you have one of the cheap blow away types..

I remember pinching out my first ever peppers and I felt SO guilty 😅 we are quite mild during winter typically it will be around 0-5 degrees and with less than an hand full of hard frost that usually clear by midday! Minus 15..🫣🥶...oh I am not so sure about the onions in those temps either!! So lovely to hear your enjoying the vid 🤗
