With the awful pendulous sedge, I recall I discovered a technique whereby I got the fork into the middle of the clump and pushed outwards to the perimeter, and took it out, piece by piece. It wasn't expecting that. While I was trying to dig it out from the edges, it stood immovable as a rock. Now if I see one of its seedlings, it is out before you can say "bloomin' sedge".
Pace yourself Emma - the headache is possibly telling you that you need more rest in between, or shorter sessions of digging/pulling! As a change of task, why not bring the kids down and start to fill the stacked pallets with all the logs, sticks and leaves you've got already - the insects will thank you for the shelter as the weather starts to get colder. Leave some undergrowth around this and any frogs around will be able to overwinter there too, and feed on some bugs, and they'll keep the slugs down for next year. You're helping to create growing space and maintain a living ecosystem then. look after yourself. 💚💚
Hi Emma, last weekend my husband had me chopping the large branches that fell in the garden. I remembered I had a cheap reciprocating saw, it was cordless. Went through the branches like butter. I recommend you should get one. They come in handy all the time x

The adventures of Emma or Emma’s adventures or Emma the adventurer 😂 I’m almost expecting game footage music as you work your way through 😂. Gardening is a long term thing. As you say, just keep plodding on. It's not instant. It slowly changes over time. Just like a tree growing, the allotment slowly evolves into a thing of beauty. 😊

Hi I think I read somewhere that spiders don't like peppermint so you could put some in your shed, my husband got a rechargeable mini chainsaw for about 30 quid and it is brilliant.

I think you doing a great job.... and doing great ...you are making more work lifting the membrane...you are exposing the bare ground which soon fill up with weed seeds... .personally I would leave it down and cut it later when I new where I was putting my beds and paths....also I would weed kill the plot to save time and less work... so I could plan the layout of the plot. Before the weather turns...
Loving ya shed my lovely landscape gardeningfriend jessie has a shed on community gardening really well made but door needed serious tlc it kept getting stuck ahhh it's sorted now 100 tries later but defo can relate to your shed Emma!
Try putting conkers in your shed. You can string them and hang them or just place in corners around windows etc. The idea is that spiders do not live in horse chestnut trees there's something about the oils/smell (who knows) that they dont like. Ive been using them for years as like you I hate spiders

Are you allowed bonfires? It might be a way of disposing of all the twiggy dried grass stuff you have accumulated. You discovered some very nice short tree trunks this time that will make good edging to no dig beds. Keep going!
Conkers apparently keep spiders at bay, it's the time of year to find some decent conkers too. Place them in the corners. I've not tried it but seems easier than burning the shed 😅. I'm using a stick to get in my shed, a quick twirl gets rid of anything in my way.

Are you allowed to have patio slabs on your allotment site? I feel sure that a slabbed part of the plot with growing pots would save your soul weed wise xxx good job though 👏 👍
