    I use 2 55-gallon blue polypropylene shipping drums I got on Craig's List for $50 each. They have caps with 3/4" NPT and 2" bung connections. The sides took bulkhead fittings perfectly. They are exactly the right height to stack with an 8-foot ceiling once I built a simple rack from a few 2x4s. Each has 8" headspace. This saved a ton of floor space in the fish room and allows me to rely on gravity to refill the salt water tank(bottom) from the ATO tank(top) when needed. They are plumbed together with 1"PVC and I added a spigot so I can pull DI water whenever I need.

    I use an old water softener salt holding "tank" as my salt mixing tank. It's flat bottom and holds 39 gallons. I hold my RO/DI water in a 39 gallon Rubbermaid storage bin. It's flimsy but I braced the top with a strap.

    I use a water barrel from garden centre. I pump the water from it to tank. No buckets required as I also have the tank next to a window and the change water goes straight out it to the garden drain.

    What would be really cool is to hear how to make a 'reef room' and go through how to actually plumb these water basins into a sump and set up a auto top off and such that all feeds into a main display reef tank in another room or in the wall etc.

    Thank you for setting me straight, Can I ask do you just mix like 5 gallons and slosh it around and scrub the barrel or do I mix a full barrel full and let it sit for a set amount of time?

    hi. +1 on the great videos they really are interesting. I'm interested to understand more about the setup of the return pump on the 160. How you would use it to run additional equipment and manage different flow rates through each and back into the tank. Thanks Steve.

    Hi BRS,
    Please could you do a short video on cheap and effective setups for quarantine tanks for fish and corals, with specifics on hardware and treatments rather than "why you should quarantine". I.e. How do we make a quarantine tank's nitrifying bacteria stable without adding live rock, should we be using fluidised media like K1 for nitrifying bacteria, what types of treatments / mechanical filtration / dips or pest control should we be using?

    Check out the D-Link DCH-S160 mydlink Wi-Fi Water Sensor. It is a great option for leak detection. Allows for free; phone calls, text messages, email and app alerts. They even offer an alarm siren that can be setup anywhere WiFi is available.

    A few months ago I called up Noresco and tried ordering one of these water storage unit. It's the shipping why I didn't. I live in NYC and the fee for shipping was about 2x the price of the container then I tri s picking it up....the closet distance was like 150 miles.

      I have a 150 tall 48×24×30, so multiple buckets is a hassle to refill with the Rodi. bucket by bucket, fill, mix,test repeat. Where a brute will be a 1 shot deal n the salinity will be more accurate too!

    This is off topic from the video but I was wondering this. I have never owned a tank in my life besides goldfish from Walmart, I am looking into buying a 20 gallon NUVO tank, I watched your video on setting it up. I don't understand how to do water changes, dose corals or even feed corals, much rather fish. I am getting a book about reefing soon, so I might get help from that. I watched your videos, and for people who know the words that your saying, it is a pretty good video, I just am completely new, I hate to ask this but will you explain the process for me a bit better. Love you videos! Keep up the good work

    Any chance the person that put that hose onto the retractable reel is still around? I bought that same reel, same hose, and could only figure out to put the hose on by completely disassembling it causing massive problems and a large expensive pile of trash. I was hoping there might be some more guidance available?

    How long can you store saltwater in a Brute trashcan and what would you need besides the trashcan? A pump to circulate? A heater? Etc.
    I use a Brute trashcan to make water but only when I'm ready to do a water change. As you know, it takes a day or two just to fill one of these trashcans from the BRS RO/DI setup. While it's filling, my living room has a giant trashcan in it with all the things needed for the water change.
    I'd be very interested in ways to make the water changes easier.

      ***** Can I ask what you do to prevent the backflow from the display tank back into your lower floor water storage?

    • @soempaing2436
      @soempaing2436 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mark Coleman I also use brute trash can for water storage. You might need to consider RODI pump if it takes too much time to fill up. Check water pressure and made sure it is above 40 psi minimum. Around 75-90 psi is what most people set the pressure. If you dont like hauling buckets, there are options such as python no spill for taking out the water from the tank and use a powerful water pump to fill the tank with saltwater mix.

    Does the stored salt water need agitation of the water while be being stored? Or an air bubbler?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  ปีที่แล้ว

      Some saltwater stores better with heat/circulation, while some mixes seem to do fine in storage without it. Check out this video if you have a couple minutes to spare. Lots of great information: th-cam.com/video/oe9vjPNvKUk/w-d-xo.html

    Would it be possible to discuss the whole issue of mixed saltwater precip over time? I believe temperature has a lot to do with it (eg water heating up and cooling down), but I've been mixing just before water changes for the last year since that seems to be the only way to guarantee that the water chemistry doesn't change drastically before it ends up in the tank. Needless to say this is much more inconvenient... Thanks!

    • @michaelwaynearnold
      @michaelwaynearnold 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would be interested in this topic also. I use two rubbermaid stacked, the top for RODI and bottom for mixing. I usually end up with a couple of gallons of unused mixed water; I typically drain it and start fresh. I hate the waste, but not sure if reusing will be detrimental. The mixing station is in the garage and gets very hot. I use red sea pro salt mix.

      You could always make your own ultra pure filtered water with a RO/DI unit! They're pretty easy to install and you'd be making water in no time. Here's the ones we carry on our site and if you had any questions as to which one to get, just give us a quick call and we'll point you in the right direction! 763-432-9691

    The shipping cost on two of those norwesco tanks is $400 (150mi away) plus another $15-30 UPS shipping charge. That's insane. Can't even understand the $400 shipping charge is UPS is delivering. The freight cost on my large reef tank wasn't near that and these empty tanks weigh practically nothing. Seems like they're blatantly ripping off buyers.

      Try a farm supply store in your area. They can usually special order them for a very small or no shipping fee. The only catch is that you have to get them from that store to your home.
