I just wanted to tell you how a simple thing you did last week helped me. I’ve been reefing for only 3 years. I have a 180 and a 13g tank. All this year year I’ve been fighting different types of algae in the 180. I finally got it under control about 4 weeks ago, but I have continued to have a fair amount of algae growing on the glass. It has required cleaning at least every other day. My tangs love it and eat it as soon as I scrape it. I was thinking it was excessive and was trying to see if I could eliminate it. I don’t like or use online forums for advice, and I don’t really have a good locLFS or any friends who have reef tanks. You did a “real world” video last week that showed dirty glass and mentioned it was a couple of days worth of growth as opposed to a weeks worth. I was like “oh that’s normal growth, my tank is normal”. Thanks for showing your tank when it was not cleaned up for a video. Also thanks for including current video of your tank instead of the old footage you used to use after the reset. I like being able to see the progress. Also, the 3 for 2 frogspawn corals I received last week are doing great.

A few years ago, my parents’ house had the same issue, when a mega apartment building forced the city to upgrade the size of the pipes in the neighborhood. turns out construction got dirty and who knows what else got into the pipes, and it just blew into our system for two years. To solve the issue, we used a 100 Micron mesh filter in a canister and then a five Micron settlement filter that saved our typical house filters. Hope this helps.

Hi Travis, just add another “whole house filter” 5 or 10 microns right after the meter and change is when needed.
Did you get the 160g container at PaulB or is there another place in Lancaster ??

In My hood ( Michigan) , they are constantly dealing with broken mains in winter, I go thru pre filters quick. I change em out fast to not kill My RO filter.

If your water coming into your house is that bad, I'd think you should be under a boil order! Definitely call your city hall.

Hey Travis, whoa that’s bad. I have the same setup and mine has never looked that bad. It turns a light brownish color after about 6 months of use. I would even think if you should run a second sediment filter. You don’t want the carbon filters to clog with the stuff in the water.

Are you doing the RO flush prior to filling container? If not BrS recommends flush to 8 tds on tds probe 1 then close flush gate nozzle to make water to save your sediment filters etc ....my sediment filters do the same in my area....terrible city water

I run a very similar RODI setup to you in Denver. I added an additional 5 micron pre-filter to get the bigger crud out prior to the 1 micron sediment. Adding this filter more than quadrupled the change interval (of both filters), so it amortized over a few years.
5u sediment > 1u Sediment > Dual Carbon Blocks > Twin 100g 'water saver' membranes > Cation > Anion > Mixed. I run ~100-110 psi across the RO membranes for efficiency.

Dude, my water has been getting worse in the city I live over the last couple months. Started with about 550 tds and has gone up to 650 tds now, as well as I am having to change out my pre-filter every 2 weeks now! Conspiracy?
