      I would absolutely love to own a Nikon Z50. At around $1000 it is still pretty high in price for me but maybe I can save up and sell my current Nikon gear for the upgrade. Or if there is any trade for work program available i would be all over that. I cannot wait to get a feel for it and I am excited as could be!

    Well, Richard, two weeks ago I purchased the Z50 package with the two new Z APS-C lenses (16-50 mm and 50-250 mm), and I have to say that I am VERY impressed with this camera system. I do think, however, that a lot of the reviewers out there on TH-cam don’t seem to understand why Nikon introduced such a camera and who the intended customer base for this camera really is. And after shooting with this camera for 2 weeks I find myself enjoying it much more than shooting with my Nikon Z6 or Nikon D500!
    Sure, the Nikon Z6 is a great FF camera with great low light capabilities and the D500 is a superb wildlife APS-C camera, but the Z50 offers something that no other Nikon camera body has been able to offer in the past: An incredibly lightweight body combined with incredibly lightweight lenses, along with a great placement of controls, and customizable functionalities that are typically found in much higher end cameras. AND, a camera body that is capable of capturing great videos as well as great photos, in relatively low light as well as good light. I think this latest camera offering from Nikon has great appeal to two types of customers:
    1. Customers like myself, who are long time Nikon users, but who have been waiting a long time for Nikon to introduce a really portable, lightweight mirrorless camera system with excellent IQ and great video capabilities. Previous efforts using smaller sensors or compact DSLRs didn’t do it for me in the past. This is the first Nikon camera /lens system that I feel comfortable taking on vacations and trips because it really is extremely lightweight, and it really does take excellent photos and videos! Having such a lightweight Camera + Lens system is like a dream come true for Nikon owners like myself.
    2. Customers who have used camera phones and cheap compact cameras for most of their photography needs in the past, but would really like to have more capable camera equipment to take better and more creative photos, but are put off by the weight, size and complex lenses of FF camera systems. There has to be literally millions of potential customers like this. What they’re really looking for is a camera/lens system that is as lightweight and as small as possible, preferable with only one lens that covers the entire focal length of interest, and that can take excellent videos as well as photos. The Z50 with the two kit lens meets most of the needs of these potential customers, and at a very, very reasonable cost.
    I think the problem with most of the reviews of the Z50 that I’ve seen on TH-cam/internet is that the reviewers seem to be people who really don’t fit into one of the two categories above. They are perhaps professional photographers, or pro-wannabees, or advanced amateurs who are still focusing heavily on incremental improvements in every new camera that is introduced into the marketplace. They seem to be concerned about issues with the Z50 that are irrelevant to millions of potential customers: Issues like compatibility with non-Z lenses, availability or more Z lenses, IBIS, having IQ which competes with the pro cameras, etc. (Concerning IBIS, or lack of it - I was initially concerned about this but it turns out that the VR that Nikon designed for the two kit lenses is absolutely fantastic and it works better than the VR in any F mount lens that I own, so lack of IBIS on the Z50 body is a non-issue for me)
    I have lots of Nikon FX and DX glass, but I have absolutely no intention of using any of these lenses with my Z50 body. Why would I want to put a heavy, expensive lens on a lightweight camera body whose sheer joy-of-use comes partly from the fact that it is so extremely lightweight? This would negate one of the key positives of the Z50. I LOVE USING the two DX lenses that were designed for this camera body. The 16-50 mm is basically a pancake lens and weighs practically nothing. The 50-250 telephoto lens has exceptional VR built into the lens, is surprisingly sharp, and weighs only 14 oz ! That makes this lens a joy to use!! I can cover a focal length of 16-250 mm (24 - 375 mm equiv) with these two excellent kit lenses, and that is pretty much all I need when traveling.
    I think Nikon did not intend to market the Z50 to pro photographers, near pros, advanced amateurs, etc. This is a camera for the masses and I think Nikon hit the nail on the head with the features that the Z50/kit lens combo offers: the extreme light weight, and the very low cost. Nikon COULD NEVER have introduced a camera system like this if they stuck with only FF cameras. I am really glad they went with an APS-C offering like this, and I believe that this will be a VERY popular camera for Nikon.

      Thomas, yes. Nikon calls the Z50 a "Compact Entry-Level" camera. But I feel a lot of people are trying to judge it as if it is a high end D500 level camera which it definitely isn't. Having said that, with the twin main duals, all those direct access buttons, and even dual customisable buttons next to the lens mount, it is a camera that can be used by more experienced users shooting mostly in M/semi auto mode.

    Z50 is an excellent camera. I see and hear complaints about no IBIS in the camera and using lens without VR is a problem everywhere.
    I guess people quickly forget we have shot with Nikon NON-VR prime lens, and DSLR's without ibis, for years with no problems.
    As far as The comment I saw below saying VR will not work on lens using an adapter.. VR works fine with Nikon's adapter.
    I bought the camera for a smaller everyday camera body and glad I did. I will happily shoot with it and still manage to produce excellent photos without ibis, as I have done for years using Nikon DSLR's. Maybe even better since I can see exposure before taking the photo, instead of after.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes Jeff, none of the Nikon DSLR have IBIS and the high ISO performance of the sensor is getting really good now (my first Nikon DSLR I would only shoot up to ISO800 at most) so the lack of IBIS is not really that bad. Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to have IBIS too and suspect there will be a higher model Z70 or something with IBIS in the future. But for a compact, entry level camera, and this being the only main feature that i want but missing, I feel this is acceptable.

    Hi Richard, I own both the Z6 and the Z50, with additional 4 Fuji’s that I use for my travel photography. I’m in love with my Z6, but couldn’t resist to the Z50. It’s a little masterpiece. Absolutely stunning ergonomics and image quality. I think it’s the most underrated mirrorless on the market. It’s a mini powerhouse in my view and I can’t wait to buy the Z18-140 DX and the Z28 mm. with that set up and the decent and inexpensive 10-20mm + FTZ it will be my most used city break/take always with me camera, and, of course, thanks for your reviews. Beyond technical knowledge you’re a REAL photographer, something very rare these days on TH-cam 😃👍🙏

      Turk99, I'm actually currently debating about a Z50 vs Fuji and already have a Z6 which I love. I'd like a second "less invasive" travel camera that has great low-light performance and could also possibly do some video and vlogging. Can you speak to what situations you prefer which cameras (Z6, Z50, and your Fujis)?

    Excellent Review. And yes, it does appear that this little camera has created quite the divide within the community. Just got one for the wife as she hates heavy cameras and so far she loves it, and I'm a big fan too, to the point that if were just going out for a walk the Z50 is now the camera we take with us. It takes great pics, is so easy to use, especially if you're already used to the Nikon system, and is just so easy to carry all day. Hopefully the negative nelly's will come around soon. I'm really looking forward to where Nikon is going with the APS-C mirrorless range and really hoping they bring something out comparable to the D500 soon, what an uproar that would cause....

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of negativity I feel come from people who expect it to be a camera that has every thing they want, even though the camera was never designed as high end camera. I feel we really need to understand what the camera was designed for, who the target audience is and whether it is suitable for those users not just think about what I want

This video also provide all the technical details, features, image quality, iso everything. I have one question, I have one D3300 and wanted to upgrade to either D7500 or Z50. Which one will be better in terms of picture quality, low light performance? I am confused.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      hello there, thanks for watching my videos! I would say the image quality of those two cameras should be very similar. If i have to choose between the two, it's more about the fact one is a DSLR and one is a mirrorless camera, which each has it's own pros and cons.
      DSLR = optical viewfinder with no delay, excellent battery life, familar camera for long time DSLR shooters. The Autofocus system (especially the one on D7500) is mature and works well.
      Mirrorless = viewfinder give you a lot more information so you can get better photos easier, much better liveview mode and video mode autofocus, you can use the new Z lenses and move to the new Z camera system which i believe will be Nikon's future.

    Do you think it is a good idea to use the 24-70 f/4 Z mount S lens with the Z50 as a walk-around lens?
    I am concerned that neither the body nor the lens has VR/image stabilization. Will that be a concern if I am majorly interested in photography?
    Till what shutter speed can I expect stable images?

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Usually at 1 / focal length is the minimum shutter speed you should use.. e.g. at 50mm it is 1/50s or faster to get sharp image. But it's really more a guideline than rule as some people haveave steady hands than others. Only issue using the 24-70 on z5 is the wide end is only 35mm equivalent so it's hardly wide angle at all.

  • @dct124
    @dct124 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Aps-C isn't going anywhere so long as there's a wild life market. The Z 50 out performs the Z6 and Z7 in DX mode. It does better video too only by a smidge.
    It's a great street shooter as well due to the controls allowing for 1 handed operation. Perfect for me when I'm shooting from my car. The LCD screen is perfect for concerts. Shooting over crowds and great for interviews or special moments on the fly like at a wedding (dummy proof). The small rig is perfect too since Nikon allows the camera to charge from USB. Unless you're shooting full 14bit Raw and LCD the battery life is great for a 1000 shots.
    This camera is a baby D3s which is pretty much surpasses. Cameras today are simply too good for people to be complaining 😂 Unless it's autofocus or IBIS it's not much to complain about anymore these days or improve upon.

    I was out with my Nikon D5200 last Saturday in the early evening. Nearly all photos with ISO > 2.000 were just useless or perhaps only suited for low resolution social media purposes.
    As i have some F-mount lenses the X50 looks really tempting. What stops me until now is the costs for any additions for the original Z system like third party batteries or a nice battery grip. Most of all prime DX X-mount lenses and/or third party suppliers lenses. With the success of the Z50 in Japan i think it will not take very long.. 😉

    • @TheRealRichardWong

      The Z50 should have much better high ISO performance than the D5200. You should also find the autofocus a lot better than the D5200, more flexible, with face/eye tracking, easier to use. Third party grip should come soon but not sure if there will be battery grip? More Third party lenses will come soon. Laowa has released many of their lenses in Z mount and more will be released in 2020 (can't say much but there are some really interesting lenses coming soon!) Nikon 28mm f/2.8 NIKKOR Z Lens, Nikon Z 40mm f2.0 Lens, Nikon Z 50mm f1.8 S Lens. all of these are in z mount. not stupidly expensive and will work on the z50.. they aren't "dx" specific, but will work. or use the z/f adapter and use one of the f mount primes. I guess you're pining for a "pancake" prime type lens, like the ones you can get in micro 4/3 formats.. it's not possible based on the physics of light, lenses and size, a so called pancake ie in the 10-20 mm range would be an obvious wide angle as opposed to a natural looking lens. the Nikon Z DX 16-50mm "kit lens" looks very "pancakey" when collapsed

    For videography (run & gun), G9/G95 vs Z50? Tryna get the best combination of size + stabilization + AF, G9 fits all the boxes, but is a tad heavy. Tried the G85 in store and quite liked the form factor. Z50 intrigues as it's lightweight and has good AF, decent price, but the stabilization doesn't seem to be up there with the Panasonic / Olympus? Looking also at the Olympus EM1 Mark 2 after the firmware update improved its AF immensely (Same thing with the G9 firmware update), but in Auckland seems like Olympus commands such a high premium compared to Pany/Nikon.
    Anything that comes close to a G85 form factor with good IBIS & AF?

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi there! I think the Z50 would be good choice for you. It's compact, and has most features you needed despite the IBIS isn't best in class. Otherwise The G95 would be a good choice too, it's an improved G85 in most area, but does have slightly more crop when filming 4k video, which is not a problem for most people unless you are using the kit lens for vlogging.
      If you finally decided you are ok with the G9 weight, come back this channel next week i may have something for you to connsider as well :)

      @Rukawasendoh117 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheRealRichardWong Thanks for the prompt reply Richard :) Yeah, surprisingly there's just not a lot out there about the G95 (In fact the G95/G85 af test was the vid that led me to your channel). No one really commented on how much improved the AF is on the G95 compared to the G85 (perhaps because there wasn't much to write home about, although thankfully through your vid one could see a bit of an improvement), we know it's roughly in the ballpark of slightly better than G85 but not quite a G9. Things that are kinda putting the brakes on for me, are that for the extra price - AF only slightly better, but not necessarily incrementally better (lol using the Panasonic as the scale doesn't really help either), the crop in 4k, slightly heavier, and the fact that the G85 may actually be better under lowlight.
      They've been having Lumix sales in Auckland currently for about $1.4 - $1.5k for G95 with 12-60 kit and G85 12-60 kit at around $1.1k. (Funnily enough G9 not on sale, perhaps the vendors have caught on to the market that with the firmware upgrade, value of G9 has somewhat appreciated)
      I think the G95 it's more of a upgrade for the photographer, but for video primarily $300 - $400 more than the G85, a little hard to pull the trigger on.
      Haha but we can't have everything, I think I just need to try the G9 in store, to see if the weight is suitable (the G85 was surprisingly light imo), because it's pretty much got everything I need (& the af is good enough now). Olympus Mark 2 is up there, but seems to be a lil pricier than the G9. Z50 has the weight and AF in its favour, but not a fan of the flippy down screen and I don't know why but 1080p on YT seems a little soft compared to what the Panasonics put out.
      And that lack of IBIS :( - haha it's hard to give up knowing what Panny and Olympus are capable of (As well as all the other good things like weather sealing, articulated screen, decent preamps (Pany, haven't heard too much on Olympus), lens lineup)
      I reckon it's between the Panasonic and Nikon at this stage unless there's a good sale for Olympus.
      Will wait to see what this year's black friday / Boxing Day sales will bring. (Last year it was $1.6k for the G9 (Body only)
      Ooh look forward to your upcoming video perhaps bringing a new competitor to the table :)

      Wow that's a long reply my friend. I did read it all. Yes I think give the g9 a try because it's a really nice camera. Not lightweight but I used the Gh5 quite a lot which is heavier than g9 and I found the weight ok.
      There is just no perfect camera isn't it?

      SL2 with a nice lens would give you superb image quality, premium and super solid feeling. Z50 can't really compare to the SL2 when it comes to image quality build quality. But it's a much easier camera to carry around with you. Even when you not sure you want to use it or not it's still not too much to just put it in a small bag. For most people the z50 is a more practical daily camera.

    For me Nikon = good bodies and nothing more. Maybe it can deal very good with color fringing, CA, even sharpnes (but to me N photos are always blurry one),
    but whole system feels pretty funny. Most lenses for DX are only zoom's, no good quality light prime lenses.

      weird comment.. there are loads of excellent primes for dx F mount lenses... and a quick look shows a 28mm, 35 mm, 50 mm, prime available in the z mount.. they are all so called "full frame" lenses.. but don't seem to be ridiculously expensive and WILL work on the z50 crop factor body. or you could use the f/z adapter and use one of the very capable primes with an f mount. I've shot nikon for years, and never had problems with blurriness. I'd look for the common factor here.. and it's probably your skill level..

    At 1080p the ISO comparisons are meaningless imo, I can't see any differences. You need to zoom in for anything to visible to viewers.
    IMO this z50 is a huge mistake from Nikon. They're already behind Canon in mirrorless lenses and now they're splitting lenses development resource between APSC and FF so they're going to fall further and further behind. They should have forgotten APSC and made an entry level FF equivalent to the RP.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey Alistair, fair point re the noise comparison. I usually do zoom in but completely forgot to do that in this review. Sorry my bad!! But thanks for the feedback and sharing your thoughts on the APSC Nikon. I do find interesting you comparing to the Canon but not Sony.

      @@TheRealRichardWong All good mate. I'm a Sony person, but it's interesting to watch what the other guys are doing. Both Canon and Nikon have the same problem, figuring out how to get their existing customers to migrate from DSLRs to the new mirrorless systems. The way I see it, Canon is making lenses that never existed before. When they finally deliver a body the "pros" find acceptable, they will have a system people really want. Whereas Nikon will have an incomplete lens system with f1.8 primes, and a base that don't really see any advantage in leaving their D850s.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@_benjimouse_ I think Canon definitely has created some pretty awesome lenses! But I do also feel they completely screw up their lens mount. Having 2 different mirrorless camera mounts is a huge mistake in my opinion. People migrated from Canon APSC DSLR -> Canon APSC Mirrorless and bought a few EOS-M lenses will then found out all their EOS-M lenses can't be used on the RF FF mirrorless. While on the other hand, Nikon's excellent Z 1.8S lenses are great lenses for both their APSC and FF users, so I feel they prioritise lenses that would benefit both platforms. Then start to release the "pro" f/1.2 lenses starting from 2020.
      Whether it is the right decision for attracting the enthusiast user? I don't know time will tell i guess. But I do like the fact that every company enter the market with a different approach.

    The suggestion that Nikon 1.8 S lenses were produced as a viable option for the Z50, if true, further demonstrates the continuing miscalculations of Nikon. This lens body combination would have no stabilization, a situation that most photographers would find unacceptable in todays market. Nikon's decision to not include IBIS in the Z50, practically relegates this camera to use of FX adapted lenses. On the other side of the issue, current Z6/7 users of Z lenses would be reluctant to buy the Z50 for the same reason. Nikon clearly shot it self in both feet.

    • @thomassavino288
      @thomassavino288 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And then again there are Nikon users like myself who see the Z50 as a camera that perfectly fulfills a need. I own a D500, a Z6, a bunch of FX lenses and some DX lenses. What I’ve been waiting years for, however, is Nikon to introduce an ultra-lightweight mirrorless camera/lens system that I can use for travel, because I hate traveling with my current Nikon camera/ lenses, because they are simply too heavy/large. Now Nikon introduces the Z50 with these two remarkably lightweight zoom lenses. A 16-50mm pancake lens that weighs next to nothing and a surprisingly sharp 50-250mm telephoto that weighs only 14 oz. Absolutely perfect for travel and for casual trips with friends. The entire package, camera and two lenses, weigh just about 2 lbs and I can cover a focal range of 16-250 mm (24-375 from equivalent), and at a total cost of only $1200. It would have been impossible to make a ff camera system with this low weight and that focal range. Nikon gave me exactly what I have been waiting for. I think there are many other Nikon users like myself who will see the advantage of the Z50 system, and I would bet that over the next year this will be a very good selling camera for Nikon.
