    I was born in Baltimore and grew up on the Chesapeake Bay. I kept my Catalina 22 docked in Middle River. I owned three boats, and loved boating so much that I emigrated to Florida, bought some waterfront property and continued boating, but now, throughout the year. I bought a wreck and restored it into my favorite boat. So I enjoy your videos!

    We bought a 1999 Maxum 3700 SCR for $4k. It's 40' long, 13.5 feet wide and weighs 22k lbs. Twin Horizon 454's. The interior is incredible and the lighting makes the boat. It was missing the radar arch and I took one from a 33' foot Maxum cut it in half and fiberglass 14" to extend it. Lots of lighting and speaker modifications in the process. It looks awesome. About to get started on the 454's but I don't have a lot of knowledge when it comes to boat motors so it will be a learning experience. Gen works and all outlets, lights etc function using battery and shore power. I can go to it and stay days on it while working at my own time. The inside is immaculate. It's a shame I can't send you pictures at TH-cam. So been watching videos and learning when came across your channel. Enjoying the restoration. 😊

    For holes I always like to drill a bigger hole. Fill hole in with epoxy . Then in the center of that I’ll drill out my final hole size. That way the transom is completely protected. 👍🏻👍🏻

    Water probably sat in the drive for years and scored a bearing. It wouldn't take a few drops to make a bearing eat itself later. Those drives are still super expensive. Never knew they made a 38 with outdrives. I spent many hours on a 38. One of the last years before they discontinued the 38. Sea Ray to me is one of the best boats money can buy.

    The gray oil came out the input shaft of the outdrive, should be no oil in the bellows. They make a nice hydraulic cart, that holds the outdrive, and is on wheels, makes installing and removing super easy, especially by yourself

    that beauty with 3 Verados on a bracket should look awesome, nice boat. I own a 2700SSC Monterey 1992, very rare boat, with twin 4.3 MerCruiser's bravo 1.... I hate them, they are a money pit you fix them and won't last a month w/o issue. rip them off and bought twin Evinrude's 250 now searching for bracket.

    • @jamesscott1932
      @jamesscott1932 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, been there done that. 35 years ago I got into a big SeeRay flybridge that was 10 years old and swore to myself I would never own a boat again that was over 10 years old. I have flipped boats for years and found that it can take a full year to sell a tub like this even when it has been re-decorated and reconditioned. There’s very few buyers for a boat that gets half a mile per gallon and is this old.

  • @Rev1Kev

    Also I suspect the damage to the outdrive, came from your install procedure in episode 3, shouldn’t have to kick or ice a block of wood, and a sledgehammer to install, if the gimbal is aligned to the engine adapter, everything should slide right in

    • @ReefRunnerRebuild
      @ReefRunnerRebuild 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not always true, they bind up on the O rings on the shaft, commonly called a "bravo kick". although alignment needs to be accurate first & checked with a tool (or old shaft)

    • @BoatRestorationByBen
      @BoatRestorationByBen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I should’ve done a y valve I can switch over but I did them separately to ensure one engine wasn’t robbing the other of water supply with one hose hooked up. It’s more tedious but fool proof this way.

    • @BoatRestorationByBen
      @BoatRestorationByBen  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Moisture meter to stringers. Best check is to pull a engine mounted bolt (just one) and see what the inside looks like. Those are the notorious spots for rot. As for the transom, I drilled a 4” hole in it and found nothing but clean dry wood with no moisture.

    Man I don't mean to hate, but that paint gun wasn't set up properly. The spray job looks dry sprayed and full of orange peal. Practice on something else next time until you're sure you have the gun adjusted correctly. It is an absolute shame to go through all that prep work just to botch the settings on your spray gun and end up with pretty awful results. If you have to spray outside, don't do it after dark when the dew point is close to the ambient temperature. It will make the paint hazy and more prone to orange peal. It also will cause a poor mechanical bond to the gel coat. Stick with it and you'll get better results.

    • @BoatRestorationByBen

      Hey no problem man. I’ll take the feedback where I can get it! Plan is to give it another go and see if I can clean some things up. Gotta wait for warmer weather first.

      Don't sweat it man, there is a lot of fun in trying new things. Painting is one of thoes things that almost nobody gets right on thier first few tries. Especially when you're just watching videos and trying to figure it out on your own. It's tough to not rush through trying to see the results at the end. I screwed up a super nice camaro one of my first times getting in a hurry. I ended up hand sanding all the door jams and every little crack all over again to do it right. It was excruciatingly tedious, but I never made thoes same mistakes again.

    You better get un tired of working on it bud. In 2022, a 1992 boat is just quite literally a never ending money pit. Especially a middle of the road quality Sea Ray. I did what you are doing to a 1996 17' Polar v hull center console. I am admitting the the world that i am an idiot. I put probably close to $15K in a boat that wouldn't sell for more than $5k at that time. You need to start thinking of all this as therapy. That's how I justified my stupid decisions about money lost. If its making you happy and filling your brain with endorphins so be it. That is all that matters.
