    This is going to be a great find for anyone like me who thinks the Mirror Man album is by far the highest and greatest level the great Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band ever got to.
    Trout Mask Replica was of course far out and an amazing statement - so were parts of the late albums.… But Mirror Man (after the 30th listen!) is blisteringly awesome - beyond compare - a mind-blowing work of art by all involved - a beautiful journey. My favorite album of all time. Thanks especially to Von Vliet and John French.

    Saw him and Magik band at Notts Uni 1973-ish, was a Hot sticky evening...He says "I have too many fans and NOT enough Fans!!" Apparently his wife (Jan) hid his saxaphone as she thought he could,nt play it!! Blew us all away..Wished it had been filmed...Halcyon days

    Beefheart spent a fair bit of '68 in England and built up a large following,myself included. This recording is a joy to behold.

    Uh Murikan here - I went to college in England in 67-68, discovered the Captain on John Peel. Blew my mind. Saw him and the Magic Band live in London in May, I believe, at Middle Earth. Again, blew my mind. Only the fortunate few are able to understand what's going with the whole Captain thing. All this music here is pre-Trout Mask. John French is surely one of the world's most inventive and unique drummers.

    This is one of their best early captures. Cheers to John Peel for the quality and foresight. The Magic Band and the Captain are hot on this set.

    F**k ! Just found this. Went to this show not knowing what to expect although buying Safe as Milk sometime before ( on Pye, in Mono. Still got it ! ) Memories man memories !! Listen to Sure 'nuff and see the Rolling & Tumbling influence. Finest Magic Band, Don, Alex, Jeff, Jerry and John. Sheer Electricity !!

      Mono is good, stereo was intended to reproduce the width of a full orchestra. Apparently the Beatles did not listen to the stereo remixes, done by engineers after the event.

    WOW!!! (Damn I was born in the '70...) First love Iron Maiden. On one foto on their first live album they were "Dentalfloss Salesman from Montana" - So second love Frank Zappa...

    Kandy Korn is perfect, fantastic - saw Beefheart at Brum town hall in early 70s - 'Ah Feel Like Ahcid'

    • @donaldronson1387
      @donaldronson1387 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Drumbo is certainly on Jaki's level, which is just about the highest compliment a drummer can receive.

    • @frankfertier34
      @frankfertier34 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@donaldronson1387 Jaki (1968, Can) is surely close to John French's level (1965, Magic band). As a drummer myself, I tend to find Drumbo influence far more prominent than Liebzeit's (but that's me)

    Love this, thanks for the upload. This is my favorite lineup, I cant find any 1968 shows or even 1967. Wish there were more.

  • @stephenbeckham3513

    At that time there weren't that many bands doing a credible version of Rollin' and Tumblin' and then add in the Captain's weird horn and Drumbo's unique style! A taste of things to come. Is there any film of this lineup besides the Cannes beach songs?
    RIP Don and Alex.

      The only other film circulating from this era so far is a snippet of their performance in Rome where they play Sure Nuff 'n' Yes I Do.

      Stephen Beckham: Cream recorded the song on their 'Fresh Cream' album [1966] - in a more, shall I say, traditional style.

      Sorry all you British blues revivalists from the 60z
      You just can’t beat Van Vliet’s vocals., harp, horns & madness along with the Magic band’s
      Treatments of Rollin & Tumblin + many other blues standards from back in the day.

    Thanks so much for this.
    I used to go to Frank Freeman's in the late 1960s. It was a tiny dance club but he used to have bands on every Sunday, many of which went on to become big, eg Yes. Capacity was at a guess 100, admission was about 5 shillings (25p) and there was no licensed bar. Needless to say, I was not at the Beefheart performance - one of my biggest regrets. The sound quality on this is surprisingly good, by the way. Also, it's good to see the photos. I wasn't aware any existed. Good stuff!

      Yay, I went a couple of times (allowed out from boarding school near by). Saw Tim Rose backed by Ainsley Dunbar, and Eclection… but unfortunately missed Beefheart 🙁.

    Art Tripp talks about recording with Zappa and he went into the living room and there was Don was sitting there all by himself, got into a conversation. How I'd love to drop acid and replay that scene.

    Very possibly Ry Cooder on slide guitar. Sounds about the same as their "Cannes on the Beach" appearance.

    • @squareeyedgit
      @squareeyedgit 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Ry was long gone by this point, it's Jeff Cotton and Alex 'St Clair' Snouffer on the guitars. Same as the Cannes performance.

    The first track is 'Sure 'Nuff ' n ' Yes I Do' not 'Rollin N Tumblin'. there is no song by Beefheart that i know of called by that name.

    • @squareeyedgit
      @squareeyedgit 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Sure Nuff was based on Rollin 'n Tumblin, a Muddy Waters track, and here they play the Muddy version - you can hear Don singing those words!

      There are so many versions of this... e.g., Fred McDowell´s take on this was called:
      I´ve been drinking water out of the hollow log.. and that is my favorite one :)
      What´s in a name, anyway ?

    I love Don and his lyrics. Sadly, the worst lyric he ever wrote was Kandy Korn. That crap is inedible.
