Curious about how and why I have mustangs?
    No, I didn’t catch them myself😂
Anyway, I originally wrote this response to someone calling me an (____) for going out of my way to get wild horses despite how easy it is to get a domesticated one. This is a common accusation I get, so thought it might be helpful to share more for those who are genuinely curious. It’s so disheartening how many people make snap judgments without bothering to learn more😞 Anyway, here’s a little backstory:
The government manages the wild horse population and rounds up some of the mustangs to keep them at what they call the appropriate management level(AML).
Whether you or I want them to, thousands of mustangs are rounded up every year. There are about 60,000 mustangs in short and long term holding right now. Some are made available to the public to adopt.
Unfortunately, being untrained, feral horses, they are a high risk breed. Many end in the wrong hands, get dumped into auctions and yes, into the slaughter pipeline.
Training doesn’t solve everything, but it does increase the chances of them having a safe life. But not everyone has the ability, time, or facility to gentle a mustang.
I’m just one of many people who gentle mustangs before finding them good homes. I care deeply for the mustangs I am responsible and don’t let them go to just anyone who wants them. I loose money doing this because I am selective and prioritizing a quality, safe home over a quick rehome. Thanks for taking the time to read and understand ❤

I think what you do is wonderful! I'm a veterinary nurse, and I just want to say a huge, heartfelt thank you for everything that you do for these wild mustangs. Unfortunately, some people are ignorant, and rather than doing a little research and finding out the facts, they assume they know the facts and go spreading their vitriol and misinformation all over social media!! It's not hard to do a little homework, and maybe the "Professionally Offended" should take a moment to educate themselves before jumping to conclusions!!
I think what you're doing is fantastic, and you should be commended for all the amazing work you do with these wild mustangs.
Can't wait to see what you decide to name her! She's gorgeous! Bless her! I'm so pleased she's in such safe hands with you! I'm looking forward to seeing her flourish under your care!
From one animal lover to another, I just want to say another big thank you! 🙏
Wishing you and Black Mare all the best!
Much love, from Wales, UK 💜🐎💜

    Bless your kind heart Britta💛
It's great that you are working so hard to give these poor babies a decent, caring home. I've been a Wild Mustang advocate for many years, and there couldn't be a sadder story than the plight of most of these horses. I don't know if you've researched where they are coming from, but it's truly tragic what the Feds have done, and are presently doing to decimate the herds, and the BLM is very corrupt.
The government round ups by helicopter are very cruel, and separate the the family groups, often resulting in many casualties with foals being run to death, and terrific injuries among them all.
The survivors are further traumatized being hauled all over the place, warehoused in dry cattle lots, and their spirits are broken. They ALL have severe PTSD and need so much TLC & understanding. They are not like domesticated horses at all, it's in the centuries of being wild & self reliant hardwired into the genes.
I found it interesting that you got DNA reports...many of the core herds are descended from the Spanish horses from the Conquistadors hundreds of years ago. They have the genetics of the Lusitano & Andalusian breeds very often, depending on the areas they are coming from. These horses are still bred in Spain.
Your Miss Sparrow has the distinctive Lusitano almond shaped eyes... check out the many TH-cam vids on them.
The American Wild Horse Campaign is a good source to learn more about what really happens to our Wild Mustangs, should anyone want more info & resources, and especially check out the work of LAURA LEIGH at WILD HORSE EDUCATION (wild horseeducation.org)...her foundation is in Nevada, and it is a real eye opener!
Thank you for being such a beautiful human being, Britta, and for saving lives that matter!

I also adopted a black mustang from the Gochute region of Nevada. She was super quick to tame. She looked a lot like yours! We named her Garnet, because we used to dig garnets in Nevada and they were black too. We had another horse named Jasper, so following the gem/rock theme.

she reminds me of my black mustang I adopted(shady). I'm new to horses, I'm 54 yr. old. I rode a horse once when I was around 28. so yeah, I was scared sh1t-less😬. I thought she was going to kill me. I'm not a trainer by no stretch of the imagination. I thought I may have bit off more than I can chew. oh and did I say I was scared sh1tless🤔.A year and a half later and I'm finally going to put a saddle on her. I have no regrets. she was gentled on her time. NO ropes, no abuse whatsoever. Just her time. she's so sweet and gentle now and I wouldn't change a thing.

I live in Dayton, NV - just a little east of Carson City. When we first moved here nearly 12 years ago, we had wild horses nibbling away at our weed patch in our front yard but the weeds were finally overtaken by clover and the horses LOVED that!! The largest group we had a one time was 16 and they ranged in ages from brand new to teenagers to full grown. Unfortunately the herds in our area have been rounded up and no longer do we have wild horses nibbling away at our clover so we replaced it with rock. I was able to sit out on the front porch while the horses were eating away and they didn't mind me at all.

Thanks for explaining why you do what you do. I was a bit shocked in the first place to be honest and asked myself, why people put a wild horse under that much preasure. I mean, this poor horse must have been so afraid on her long way all alone. After thinking about it, for me it is still not the right thing to do. Saying „They do it anyway, wether I want it or not“ is allways a poor excuse. If one really wants to help, shouldn‘t we concentrate on the reproduction numbers? Like castrating some of the horses but let them be free rather than do this to them, separate them from their family and traumatize them?

    • @TheProjectEquestrian
      @TheProjectEquestrian  ปีที่แล้ว +4

First off, I want to say thank you so much for articulating your thoughts in a kind and thoughtful way. You have no idea how refreshing that is! ❤️☺️
I think improving the lives of mustangs is multidimensional and a team effort. Yes! I agree that looking into multiple solutions for managing the population is needed. I took a pretty in depth course on everything mustangs, from how they determine the appropriate management level, to how they determine how much the land can sustain (and is it consistent and accurate), round-up policies and procedures (and are they being followed?), contracts with external companies (such as the aircraft used), round up methods (helicopter/bait&trap), politics, contraceptives and the effect they have on the social life of horses. Anyway, it was very eye opening and I left with the "the more you know, the more you don't know" feeling. I do think it is far more complex than most people think. But there are definitely some changes that need to be made.
I think change has to happen on multiple levels. More people need to be doing research on alternative solutions. It is very political, and the process of making changes is pretty tedious it seems! We need people understanding how that works so that efforts are effective.
I don't believe that the lives of the horses already rounded up should be tossed away as a lost cause. It's a pretty sad life. I adopted a 2yo mustang who was born in holding as her mother was rounded up pregnant. She had no idea what grass was when I brought her home! That is incredibly sad to me. She also seemed pretty emotionally shut down, so it was neat seeing her come out of that.
I guess what I"m saying is change has to be a team effort, with team players having different roles. What I'm doing is a practical way of helping mustangs that have already had their lives turned upside down- it is without doubt traumatic. (and just one small comment - she was shipped with others from the holding facility to east coast. Only for the last hour was she alone. But still, I still think it's traumatic and important to take that into account as I start caring for them, which is why i mentioned it). What I'm effecting the lives of individuals. What others are doing are helping from more a distance, trying to make changes for the mustangs still wild. I think both are needed.
