  • U.S. Marine Corps recruits participate in Final Drill at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. The recruits were scored according to confidence, attention to detail, and discipline. The Final Drill is held during the last week before graduation and the senior drill instructor drills the platoon, establishing them as one of the newest members of “the Few and the Proud.”

      In the British army the arms drill is demanded so that a single loud 'crack' is heard from the whole platoon , so much so that their fingers bleed!

    The reason warriors and soldiers are still taught formations and marches is for discipline and to test whether the trooper can listen and follow proper instruction.

      A very important decision that has to be made by you alone. Very hard to change your mind once your there. Look into it and find as much info as you can gather. Know exactly what you want to do and what MOS you want. Once you know make sure everything that is offered and promised is in writing. Its a big step. Either way you go dont go in blind.

    • @low5738
      @low5738 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bayas M I just don't want any other branch to have more respect than any other soldier, like idc if I become a Marine or an Army Soldier, I would be there to serve my duty, it seems Army is easier.

    • @MBayas1
      @MBayas1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      There is always going to be rivalry between the branches. Its what you make of it. Marines bootcamp is harder. All the branches know that. Join the branch you feel you will be happy with. Go to the recruiters office and talk to the Marines on leave from bootcamp and ask them questions as well as Soldiers. Maybe even Navy and Airforce. They all have something different to offer. Personally The Marines are the best. I had good times and bad times. But never the less. Best decision I ever made. Some Marines may not agree but I'm basing it on personal experience. My career and work ethic all came from serving in the Marines. I owe them that. Once again In basing on my experience not anyone elses.

      Marines are "Ministers of Death", make no compulsions.
      Marines have a Doctrine, called "Pacification" we Pacify the Local Indigent's/Locals to use them for Support of our Occupying Forces, The US Army is To Conquer and Control by overwhelming Weapons of Shock & Awe! In the Corps every MOS, has a Mission & Objective that is to Support the Ground Forces, US Forces cannot win a Battle nor a war without taking and holding the enemies TAOR, or the Geographical land mass, Boots on the Ground, Infantry know its imperative for a Successful Victory, We LOCATE, CLOSE WITH AND KILL THE ENEMY BY FIRE AND MANUVER. So remember that poor FO FWD of the Battle is Mission Critical, for Arty tp Drop it's DEATH BLOSSOMS on the Enemies Position, Marines are very good at Taking the enemies land and NEVER GIVING IT BACK We will secure it and Fight to until there is no more Ammo, then we FIX Bayonets, and if that doesn't Work we will Beat you to death with our Rifle, after that we use Hand to Hand Combat which we are better than ever since MCMAP was Implemented So remember somewhere on this Globe there is a Young Marine Guarding his Post and Walking Plank! to Plank! and Takes No Shit From Any Rank!
      Rah!

    • @numinous4789
      @numinous4789 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It's actually pretty simple: the Army and Marines come in and occupy the territory that the Air Force has already cleared. Make no mistake: 95% of all damage done in common-day war is due to Air Power. Our military would be essentially useless without it.

    Close order drill is what seperates Marines from the other branches. Without even realizing it, it basically instills immediate response to orders. And this translates to the battlefield. I remember when I was in Iraq back in 2006. When we would catch fire or hit an IED our response to these situations was eerily robotic in a way. You respond without having to guess about it, and therefore things would run smooth and orderly.

    The old Marine watched this video and smiled. He recalled his time at Parris Island which seemed so very long ago. Different Rifle, different uniform. All green but still lean and mean. He remembered each of his Drill Instructors names like it was yesterday. The names and memories of his brother Marines still linger in his mind. The cadence, commands and movement of his Vietnam era M16 came back to him. The sounds of close order drill and marching brought back pleasant memories. So young and so Gung-HO, he thought he was invincible. But age and injuries have caught up with him. He no longer can run 3 miles or fight with a pugil stick. Getting out of the "rack" is not so easy now. But put him behind his rifle (There are many like it but this one is mine) and 500 yards is no more a challenge than it was many years ago. Still sharp and steady, he can hit center mass and never jerk the trigger. Breath control is remembered as is sight alignment and sight picture. Yes, it was many years ago and several wars later, but this Old Marine never forgot that every Marine is a Rifleman! May GOD continue to Bless and Keep the United States Marine Corps, SEMPER FI!

    A couple of things about drill. Final Drill for a DI is like their Daytona 500 - it is revered. Drill for a platoon needs to be their Zen - it is the Platoon's identity in all the eyes of the other Di's an recruit Commanders. Drill is the foundation of following instructions, listening to commands, team work as a unit, and above of all pride as a Corps. Drill is the #1 thing a DI's is graded on in the eyes of God and everybody.

  • @overopensights
    @overopensights 7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    It seems very unnatural when marching to place the flat of the foot on the ground. That is not how the body is built. The heel should 'strike; the ground first with the foot at an angle outwards. I am not criticizing, but it doesn't seem right. ( I can still hear it now from my own basic training "Drive those heels into the ground, I want to hear the crack of the heel!") Can I ask also what is the length of pace?

    • @UranusGaseous
      @UranusGaseous 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You only place the flat of your foot down when you mar(k) time march, half-step or conducting pivots like right/left oblique, column left/right, to the rear, etc. Length of pace is 30".

    • @overopensights
      @overopensights 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      UranusGaseous Greetings . No matter what the Drill Pamphlet states: On this vidio at 1.56 the flat of the foot is contacting the ground first, it is either that, or they are instructed to place one foot directly in front of the other while marching. Is the marching pace 120 to the minute?

    • @UranusGaseous
      @UranusGaseous 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have no idea what you are asking. If you are stating that going flat footed @1:56 then yes I see that but only about 2 of them are doing it, not all of them, so people just walk/march differently. Normal marching pace is 120 beats per minute at a length of 30". Now this the real world so it is ABOUT 120 not Exactly 120 beats per minute. No need to nitpick here.

    • @overopensights
      @overopensights 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      UranusGaseous. Sorry if you think me a nit picker, I'm not! I was 26 years British Infantry and the US Marines are a Regimental 'Affiliated Regiment' to our own from our service together in The Boxer uprisings, Sousa wrote a Regimental march in Honour of that association. (Google it for my unit.) I was a Regimental Sergeant Major and feel I would love to have that squad for an hour or so. I know from my own experience that the US Marine Corps are a 'Golden Thread' that runs through all good things American. We used to meet them in Subic Bay when we traveled to and from the war in Borneo on RN Destroyers, they were on the way to Vietnam; and how we wanted to go with them! No Sir I am certainly not a critic of The USMC but more of an ally,

    • @UranusGaseous
      @UranusGaseous 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not trying to insult you Sergeant Major so I'm sorry if you took it that way but I was just trying to point out that these are recruits after all and their drill is less than perfect so you have to give them some leeway when it comes to things such as drill. If I am not mistaken, the British military drills slightly differently than the US military.. at least from my experience they do. I was in the Marine Corps and I attended Corporals Course when I picked up the rank of corporal and that course is heavy on drill so yeah while flat footed drill isn't the norm it happens.. It's about the unit as a whole and not the individual Marines or in this case, individual recruits.

  • @stevefowler2112
    @stevefowler2112 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Not bad at all, but not quite the snap and pop we had back in the day...from when I went thru boot at Parris Island in '75 the biggest thing that jumped out was how everyone puts their feet down so softly...apparently they are no longer pushed to march with their heel slamming down like we were...we were taught early to slam the hell down...When we'd march the DI's would scream HEELS, HEELS, HEELS!!!!!, and when we'd march between the barracks it would sound like thunder...these recruits seem to be coached to do just the opposite...I had heard talk that some of the stress fractures suffered in boot were possibly caused by how we used to march so maybe there was an official effort to stop marching like that...I don't know, but it sure sounded and looked more impressive than the soft marching here....but other than that they look pretty good, not as good as we were but pretty damn good.

    • @quietplease7284
      @quietplease7284 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed...this platoon seemed to be just ever so slightly off. I went through San Diego in '87 and we definitely were still taught to slam that heel into the deck.

    • @joshm3484
      @joshm3484 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure if it's stress fractures or the softer sole of the new boots, but I remember doing The Crucible with a stress fracture, and I'd still say better to slam the heel. Besides, stress fractures only take a couple months to heal.

    Here I am watching this as retired Marine and a former DI at PISC. I was a SDI for my last two of 6 platoons I worked and here I am critiquing it wih a DI's eyes. Those recruits could have done better. Then I stop myself. Wait you haven't been on the drill field in thirty years and yet I am seeing heads move and some sloppy manual of arms. Well dammit I need to lighten up! Old DI's like me just don't quit. LOL! My last final drill I pulled the stack arms card. Oh boy lucky me. My recruits executed flawlessly. I didn't win the final drill, I had to many recruits not taking a full 30 inch step out the pivot on a column right but the drill masters all gave me a great critique. FInished second and its my hope all my recruits had a good tour in the Corps

    Close Order Drill motivates me. I served from Dec 72 to Aug 80 and was a Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor with Kilo Co. 3rd Bn. From Feb 76 to May 78. I loved the F…ing Corps and the Corps loved F…ing me. All jokes aside, being a Marine and especially a Drill Instructor was the most rewarding thing I ever did. That even beats 32 years in law enforcement. I am proud to say that my 3 sons were also Marines and I now have 1 grandson in the Corps and one in the Navy. Not sure how that happened! Brings back memories. I was the 2nd Bn. Drill Master. SgtMaj Overstreet was my Bn SgtMaj and immediate supervisor who went on to become SgtMaj of the Marine Corps.

    Except for the optics on the rifles and the boots, this looks exactly like it did at Parris Island in November of 1976 when I graduated from Plt. 3010. Semper Fi men. Carry on our great tradition.

      Every final drill sounds like that believe it or not. A lot of what you hear is the slings.

      The Silent Drill Plt. is what made me want to enlist although I never had a Billet that I could get into the Plt. I was definitely sold when I was Civilian Shit, I saw them perform at a High School Football game, at Half time, and said that is what I want to be and enlisted into the Delayed Entry Program, was Poole, and the rest is History,
      Rah!

      Bob C That's because it's 3rd batallion and they are always pretty terrible at drill.

      You think that's bad, you should see a 4th BN final drill.

    I am a former Marine. I graduated from Parris Island in 1994 on November 10 and what I saw in this video would not have been acceptable in my Marine Corps. Lack of discipline and pride. I also was 3rd battalion. I haven't done any of those moves in 24 years and I can still do them better than what I saw in this video.
