  • Working on replacing the trunnion bushing on Dirt Perfects 99 Mack. As typical shop work goes, we ran into a few problems, but nothing we couldn't fix with hard word and bad jokes. used the Mavic mini at the end for a random clip of a barge on the Ohio River. Hope to be out of the shop soon and back in the dirt!

    That's exactly what we called it, "rowing the boat." I have done many camel back bushing jobs having worked in the Mack shop for almost 22 years. I will never forget the day we got the hydraulic torque gun. The only day better than that was when we got the pneumatic torque wrench but just my luck I was no longer doing suspension work then. Keep up the good work on the Mack and if you ever have any questions about it just give me a shout, I know grey motor Mack's like the back of my hand!

    Making progress... kind of makes my trials and tribulations when installing a new air filter in my tractor seem like a a petty task!
    Watching you tug the ‘safety’ chain reminded me...
    Years ago, on a trip to Rancho Cucamonga I took a tour of what was billed as an Authentic Working Desert Ranch... they had a donkey hooked up to a beam that was turning a pump. As it walked around and around in a circle, water came out and dumped into an overhead trough. The trough poured into a tank about 20 feet away.
    They told us that the water was used to water the horses. But, I took a close look at the tank. The cover was off of the side opposite the tourist stop. It had a false bottom in it.
    From the top, it looked as if it held about 4ft of water. From the back you could see that it only held 6”. Beneath the bottom was a pipe that returned the water to the well.
    My first thought was, “I bet they don’t let the donkey see the back side of the tank!”
    Fortunately for you... closing the gap was something more concrete than filling a bottomless tank!
    And once again, I enjoyed this presentation immensely!

  • @jeffreykreft5442
    @jeffreykreft5442 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Tech tip of the day, first you should have changed both the u bolts, looking at the threads of the one you kept it is plainly obvious those threads were stretched. Also lube the threads of the u bolts with red or blue grease. This will eliminate allot of the force tightening theses up, also when it comes time to remove, hopefully it will help. This is the exact reason why you lube head bolts for the same purpose, it eliminates the drag and allows you to get a more accurate torque without destroying the threads. Just my 2 cents, been doing this type of work for over 30 years.

      Dirt Boss Tri-County Masonry & Excavating impact won’t run them! I ran them as far as I could with. Trust me, if I could have, I would have! Gotta get those row reps in though. How’s the new dozer working out? Can’t wait for a video of her pushing some big dirt.

      When we get closer I'll send you info on the boat I'll be on.

    Would it be possible to hook up the impact wrench to the torque multiplier apparatus. Keep from doing all that rowing. Also use never-seize compound on the threads of the "U" bolts.

    • @CaptainKleeman

      Not to, the way the sun gears are inside the torque multiplier, they would end up getting shattered. Good thought though!

      Jeffrey Wrightsman not very often for us. We don’t run OTR; just local job sites. For us it’s about e dry six years. But I can check with mike to see the exact mileage.

    Please forgive my ignorance, but there's something I just have to ask. Seeing the springs on that truck, are those (what appears to be) shock absorbers doing anything to actually help the ride? Seems like shooting a bb gun at a freight train to me.

    • @CaptainKleeman
      @CaptainKleeman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Lilly this is called a camel back suspension, it’s known for riding rough on OTR trips. Made more for “off road” driving such as job sites or small county roads like we do a lot off. Mostly all of the force is taken though the leaf springs which is why the U-bolts that hold them together have to be torqued so high. As far as the gas shocks, I can’t imagine they offer a lot as far as ride comfort, my best guess is they work to keep a little extra downforce on the drives when the suspension is being flexed and help the leaves stay in the correct ride position when the suspension travels. But that’s just a guess. Thanks for watching!
