In this clash of the titans, we’re pitting GCN auf Deutsch presenter Richie against Victor Campenaerts and Ward Lemmelijn to find out whether rowers or cyclists make for the strongest endurance athletes.

      I was surprised. I thought the rower Ward Lemmelijn would win with his pumped arms and legs, he has the perfect sprinter's physical form factor. So for a short fast cycle, rowing, then sprinting, he was outright favourite in my guesstimate.

  • @TrkJustin
    @TrkJustin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +110

    If youre not a rower its hard to understand how fast the 2k from Ward was on the rower. Most rowers could train their whole life to get a time under 6minutes and wont be able to do it. Ward did it after a 13minute zwift race, while on a pretty low stroke rate and still feeling ok after he was done.

    The most brutal part of this whole test is doing a 2k row without any rowing experience and Ward knowing the pain it causes and having to do a 2k 'just for fun'. Also 5:58 is still crazy fast.

    I've raced my bike and also raced on the rowing erg. The 2k erg race at a big indoor regatta will take more out of you than any bike rice, and do it in under 7 minutes. No contest which one is the harder event.
    But measuring fitness of elite athletes from different sports is arbitrary at best, even when those events are fairly similar in power output/physiology required. In order to get to world class level so much specialization is required that fitness for most other activities will be sacrificed. That being said, the current E-Cycling WC is a lightweight Olympic rower who also trains on the bike.

    On these levels you can only be on the top in one sport, since every sport is very specific…
    Jason Osborne did a lot of cycling during his rowing career, much more than most of the rowers do.
    But rowing gives you a massive engine and it‘s easy to adapt for cycling - the other way around is quite hard as you need some years to get a very good technique which is needed.

    • @paulim8703
      @paulim8703 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Surely road racing has a lot of technique too? Descending, bunch riding, climbing, sprinting, TT position, timing. You might not need much on Zwift, but real life is quite different!

    • @Dramboli
      @Dramboli 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@paulim8703 yes you are right. Specially TT is a discipline for it‘s own.
      I think the difference is just that you sometimes see cycling pros with some bad skills already in a pro team, like Michael Woods for example, he had some bad descending skills.
      In rowing you have have more ore less one technique, but if it‘s no very good, you don’t even get the chance to start at a worldcup.
      Also most of the people can already ride a bike more ore less but not the other way around.

    Rowing is by far the hardest ....its saps your energy,your heart rates screaming at you its brutal! My best time when i was really fit doing many time trials was 7.30 for 2k and i was 48.to put that in perspective i was capable of a 23 minute 10 TT,and could run 5k in 23.30

    • @liamkaloy
      @liamkaloy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      this clip obviously proves you wrong. The first two competitions ware minutes long (10 minutes cycling and 5 minutes rowing) and the last one was only 50 second. So shuttle run was by far the hardest one for all the athletes and most likely there is no human on the earth who could keep up in that run that for more than 60 seconds, while there are plenty who could cycle/row for 10/5 minutes.

    • @jordanmeanes4464
      @jordanmeanes4464 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@liamkaloy Just to confirm, you're stating most people can't run for more than 60 seconds whilst they can ride and row for 5 to 10 minutes hence running is harder?

    • @davemellor4697
      @davemellor4697 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@liamkaloy What are you on about? the rowing was 2000 metres which took between 7.51 and 5.58 not 5 minutes rowing? and the shuttle runs would take about 5 minutes depending on what level they had reached? cycling was a program on zwift 11.51 and 13.15 so i really dont know what you were watching?

    • @liamkaloy
      @liamkaloy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davemellor4697 I am talking that from all the exercises they performed here the hardest one (and by far) is shuttle run and not rowing. Also for unexperienced people it might look easy but it is not. Shuttle run (like in this move) is extremely hard and rower died out after just 40 seconds of that exercise. As an ex pro cyclist I performed many fit test over the years but nothing was so damaging in such short time as the shuttle runs.

    • @shuycg
      @shuycg 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@liamkaloy damaging? Really? Isn't this like a sprint? Consider the recovery times after each event. I'd say that's a better measure of the difficulty.
