I was thinking today as I was testing out some of your techniques on my first ever dungeon tiles, just how cool it is that you share all of this with everyone. Its really selfless and generous of you. I'm going to start supporting you on patreon because of how much I respect what you do.
Hi. Big fan of your videos. I have a suggestion for you: to make orange cave titles. Most caves are created by water destroying a calcareous stone that got an orange color, but everybody paint them as solid rocks (gray and black colors). Caves made of rock are more usual next of a volcano, usualy a lone corridor for the lava flow out. I think a dark brown color with some orange or yellow highlights could give an idea of a poor iluminated calcareous cave, it would be more realistic and interesting. Calcareous caves eroded by the flow of a river have horizontal lines in their walls with variation of colors from red to white too. Try to look for real caves on pinterest.
40 - 90 degree corner pieces 20 - Of each: squares, two sided, one sided 9 - 45 degree pieces About a dozen 'fake walls' That's a lot... totally awesome!
Great idea to use the scrap as a way to narrow the tunnels. I love adding constricting tunnels that my medium sized hero's must crawl through, when encountering Kobolds. Kobolds may be weak, but with traps and advantage on attacks (PC's are effectively prone when crawling) you can make a great combat sequence. I am going to give you idea a shot, I really like it.
Dude, just discovered the channel today. This man is a total savage. So creative, resourceful, thoughtful. I love it! I am going to start making TONS of terrain!
I am hoping to make a set for myself very soon, I have decided to do 50 perfect squares and 50 90° and using the wavy scrap pieces either on the outside of the perfect squares to make the walls seem uneven and slightly wider than the 3x3 square or on top (as you showed) to make them more narrow. That way you do not have to make different ones but you still have the same amount of variability.
My cousin and I were just talking about making some 3d elements for D&D yesterday. and less than 24 hours later I find your channel! I love this layout a lot. especially since it keeps the grid lines. can't wait to try this!!!
I had been on the fence about getting a proxxon cutter for a while now . . . this video made me pull the trigger. Ordered from your store on Friday - should have it tomorrow. I'm excited to see what I can make with it.
I made an ice cavern sort of like this, just a more jagged cut. Working on a Crystal version of it and using for round rooms that are to look like the inside of trees. I love this table, great tutorial, ideas flowing like lava now.
Gridless....I only use a grid if it makes sense....as in if there is stonework that would actually have some sort of grid. For natural stuff like cave floors or grass I don't use a grid.
If you would put magnets in the sidefaces of your tiles they would work even better. But all in all i love your system. Your work is very inspiring. Thanks
I love the Idea of this tile system. I just got my proxxon in and I cant wait to use it to make this. I also really liked your video on not using grids on the terrain and my D&D players are all for it. I think a 3 and 6 inch grid system can be great for non grid playing.
Seriously great video's, I've been off to the hardware, got a heap of trinkets and even before I've made anything at all, I've followed you on Patreon. I'd say the last one of four I can do. excellent work - and thank you.
Excellent video and wonderful timing. When it comes to painting, I prefer the base + wash+dry brush technique for tiles, but I have been wondering about the most efficient way to production-style the painting. I'm about to create @100 tiles for my new dungeon set, so this particular series is relevant to my interests. Two suggestions/comments. My experience with full modular sets has led me to build _a few_ 'rooms' (20x20/30x20) and 'corridors (20x10/30x10) without walls and that helps speed up reveals. Also recall that, for mine-tracks, HO rail is 25mm scale and purchasing track (especially used track) could save a lot of time. Again, great video. Keep them coming.
Yea, I actually already have a bunch of big rooms in the 1/2" format that I can drop down quickly if need be. That was the main reason I used singular room tiles in the past, speed during game. With this new system, while very good, speed of set up is an issue and I will like switch to fog of war when using it.
You know I really liked the free form version of my original set, made for some great set piece encounters....but it never really sat well with me for dungeon crawl type caves, and the non conformity of it admittedly stressed me out more than it should.
Really looking forward to this little series! They are a great design, look easy to use and easy to store. I will certainly be making some of these as soon as I build my Hotwire table.
Great work! I'll definitely be making a set of these for my own table. For the pieces with cave walls, I think I'll rip some to 3x6 first and do a wavy "cave wall" cut to get them to 3x3 to create pieces with supplementary walls... it's not only a productivity saver (only have to cut the wall on each tile 1x instead of cutting straight and recutting jagged) but I can also seamlessly incorporate secret rooms without having to swap tiles or have uneven edges butting together.
Oh man I love the look of these so far! I've been looking around on TH-cam for ideas on cave tiles but kept running into the same problems you mentioned with your first set. Soon as I saw these I knew you'd solved all my problems! Really looking forward to seeing the project develop, I hope it goes well! 👍
Oh man, back in the 80s when I played TDE (German DSA) as DM mostly, the main tool was squared paper where we did exactly what you are doing for Dungeon planing as much as for mapping them. I do not play the new D&D version, still, I like the idea of doing your mapping via those tiles as you could remove some or change them to simulate characters forgetting things or "magic" changing them ...
I'm about to be making a cave system but what I had though about doing is maybe making one board 20x30 for example and get it all gridded then just cutting random shapes and laying them down on it creating the actual tunnels. Idk if it'd going to work well but I'm lazy and it sounds good in my head 😂
So, I know it has been a while since this video, but, as far as the desire to bulk base spray your tiles, why not invest in an electric paint sprayer, they can take acrylics just fine, or better (and cheaper for volume) cheap house paint, some thing like the Wagner 0518050, I have been using one for wargame tables and foam terrain for the last year or so, with great results.
Man, i really wasn't that sure for going on towards modular tiles again. Started up with all cardboard DMScotty-/DMGinfo-style pieces, but went full Hankerin lastly, just becaus its easy, its impressive 3D, and its huge in scale, what makes it somewhat more immersive (if that makes any sense). But i really wanted some foam-tiles for caves and stuff - i think this might be the thing here... we'll see :-) probably trying it out with some variation.
Yes! TGIF another BMC video! Great video, and impeccable timing. I was just about to make another set of the modular cave tiles from the first video. I still use them for everything. Instead of placing sand on the top of them, I placed a 1' grid on them for my players to be able to judge movement better. I wonder if I can convert my players to the ICRPG banana movement without much of a fuss lol! It would save me considerable time etching my grids. Luckily I've only been using 1' and 2' inch foam so everything links up pretty well. I just place a door or an archway where I connect my old modular cave tiles. This system is a game changer though. I'm looking forward to making my set. Another masterpiece! Thanks for helping bring life to my game table.
Thanks.....and honestly if you can get your table to become less reliant on a physical grid it can really make your life as a crafting dm a lot easier.
Could you not also make a set of rocks/rubble/other blockage items to put into areas for restricted hallways? It might be easier and more versatile, and allow you to continue to focus on the 3x3 system that's working perfectly in every other aspect of the game?
I have something like that going on on my dm friend tiles: one inch based modular walls/obstacles put over 3x3 dungeon tiles. they're also modular, with a few variations of individual 1x1 inchs rocks, and some extreme/center/corner pieces to make wall-like structures
Maybe, if you wanted to differentiate between those rounded pieces in the middle that represent elevation vs. negative space, you could paint one side black? Same with the off cut that you use towards the end. Still paint the sides as normal. I might give it a try.
On a project of this size, wouldn't it be easier to use the tinfoil ball on the foam before you cut it all? Maybe do a few and roll them under a board? (Then just manually touch up any missed spots after by hand).
Loved the product, first time viewer, can't wait to see more. Couldn't hear the audio on earbuds in the train unfortunately, a bit low. Looking forward to more and subbed. 😀
I know that this is just the first episode of a series, but I had a little idea that I wanted to share with you. You know those little offcuts that you're using to create narrow passageways? I have a proposal regarding them which you might find intriguing: Paint the upside of them to look like rock, but the underside - paint it pure black. Since your tabletop is pure black, this colour is immediately subconsciously recognised by your players as representing "out of bounds," whilst the grey rock colour represents actual surfaces that their characters can climb and clamber over. So, for instance, your stalagmite stacks (as shown near the bottom of the screen) will have a grey, rocky coloured surface on the top, showing players that they can climb up these stalagmite stacks if they wanted to get a high ground advantage against enemies, or what have you. But your offcuts for making narrow passageways? You can turn them upside down, or right side up to allow you to represent either raised areas on the cave floor, or full cave walls. This will double the "functionality" of all your "cave scatter terrain" to represent both uneven terrain, and walls. Two birds, one stone, and a lot more versatility to your new tileset. I just wanted to share this with you, because it seemed like a good idea, and the flat-on-both-sides nature of these parts seems to scream out for this kind of versatility / usability. Stay awesome. -KM.
this is so good, i was always looking for something different for doing Advanced hero quest, already made the step to a gridless game with that but this will add another great level of play for me..thank you, cant wait for the next videos
Instead of cutting out material on the edges (the wavy lines), you could taper the top edges only, leaving the base at 3x3. That way it won’t look as if it’s waving in and out to a point every 3 inches. A more seamless transition while retaining the base 3x3.
yay! looking forward to seeing the rest of the series :-) i'll be making a whole dwarven mountain fortress system for use in my wargaming in a few months, so this should come in super handy, especially the mine cart tracks!
To display a cave system in its fullest you need 6 types of tiles. The first group is the one without cuts (0 Cut). Than you have 2 cuts. Either on opposite sides or next to one another. Than you have 3 cuts. That are the dead ends. And finally you have the one with 4 walls on each side. So just a hole in the ground.
You only need the 3 side and 4 side if you want those shapes to exist as 3x3 tiles.....I don’t. You can make slightly larger versions of those shapes with the other tiles.
Can you put a link to the video showing how to make the track tiles and carts? I can't seem to find it...that sounds so freaking awesome I'd have to try my hand at it!
Your videos are awesome man. I look forward to them every Friday. Have you considered using or do you already use an air brush? It might help with the black-bombing. Although it won't help with the ModPodge coating. Anyway, such a cool idea. Thank you for all of your tutelage!
Great video! 10/10 By the way, Rails can be easily made out of square ABS plastic rods (1 mm in diameter) + some coffee sticks. You can find them on Alie)
Yea, I have a lot of ideas for rails....if it was just for me personally I'd just buy and use HO scale railroad tracks because they would be perfect, but I'm not sure that is the best for a DIY channel so I'm looking into home made for the viewers. ABS or plasticard rods would be great for the actual rails, but again, not something everyone has access to so I'm going to explore other options.
gosh darnet, i just started making the old cave tiles i'm nowhere near done with al of them but i already made some and now you make new better ones unlucky me
Find myself wondering if there was a way to use a hand pump spray bottle with watered down base coat. Like one of the large kind you pump to build up pressure then spray. I think it could work as long as you kept the paint fairly thin.
You're room tour vid actually popped up after your battle mat video! Your room is awesome, love the daughters craft table touch, Im in the process of convincing the wife to let me do a room in a similar style but your room looks pretty big. Random question on that, whats the dimensions of the room? Having a 7 foot long craft table in my current one takes up a fourth of the current room.
Yup, a viewer actually made a set out of mdf and they look great. They would be extremely durable and nice and heavy. Honestly that is likely how I would make them for myself if I didn't have the channel where I try to keep the viewers in mind. Doing it out of wood is awesome, but not something everyone can tackle. I say go for it.
I would imagine that the tiles, being made of foam, might tend to shift and move around. I wonder if you would fix that using weak magnets or velcro strips.
The problem is that nobody want's to pay premium dollar for terrain made from foam, and my time is valuable so I'd have to charge premium to make it worthwhile to sell.
That's understandable, but is there no other way to mass produce it? Like old-timey division of labor type thing? They're just so cool and you do such a terrific job with them.
I personally don't like the big gap that creates between tiles, and at my table its not really needed, they don't move too much on the felt and my table isn't rowdy, but it's a good option for some people.
you can use a pin drill to stick tiny magnets into the tiles, and staples to put iron in the tiles... however... it would be difficult to get all the polarities to line up, and you wouldn't want tiles that repel each other
Interesting, it may be possible to make it into a kind of turn-based 3D board game if the tiles were small. You could create a Lord of the Rings game where your minis move one tile at a time, it would be a large table and could have 200+ tiles. Maybe somebody wants to do this, but, sadly, I don't have anything that can precisely cut all of those tiles, so I most likely will never do this. But, it's an idea.
Wouldn't there be "five" kinds of tiles, one with four edges preserved, painted up just like the rest, to create a large cavern room? (barring the sixth random angly one and the seventh random wiggly one for passage walls :P )
It will be better, if made the highest with two different bottom (like color or texture), which show wall/column or another side show another lever of cave.)
INTERESTING...A mine which kobolds can takeover, lace with traps. and then the lord pays the adventurers a shite load to clean them out. You will need to develop some wall traps for those pesky hidden passages, etc...So yeah, mate, sick with 3 inches.
While traps would be fun to make, I've always felt that they don't warrant a craft and are something to exist in theatre of the mind.....but I'll consider it, as they can be fun builds.
Black Magic Craft I use small glass beads to denote a trap. The theater of the mind allows me.to make the trap wonderours. The players still have to remember what kind of trap the bead represented. I use different colors for discovered tripped and disarmed. That's been my solution for years
Why not just prep, texture and paint the board of foam before cutting? You could put a grid on there as well, although that might mess things up with the 45° pieces. Anyway, love your vids!
Welcome to the channel. This question and many more have been answered in detail for your convenience :) Check out my Basics series to get going. Here is the info on the foam: th-cam.com/video/0_vV6X3iHs4/w-d-xo.html
That is the first cave tile system I've seen that I like the look of.
Thanks....and there are so many systems out there, I'll take the compliment!
@@DwarvenForgeOfficial Your prices are out of hand, but I'm gonna take a bunch of your ideals for free, TYVM.

My husband plays DnD with his friends and thanks to your videos. I am planning to make some terrain for him.
I don't even play DND or make terrain. But I still watch your videos because they are really interesting! keep up the good work
Nice....maybe you need to try some d&d though :)
you should get into it
Don't forget to save a few tiles with 4 straight edges to use in the center of really big rooms. Boss monsters sometimes take up a lot of space...
40 - 90 degree corner pieces
20 - Of each: squares, two sided, one sided
9 - 45 degree pieces
About a dozen 'fake walls'
That's a lot... totally awesome!
You should look at some 1980s tile-based video games - this is a physical analogue of some of tiles which are used to create maps. Nicely done!
I had been on the fence about getting a proxxon cutter for a while now . . . this video made me pull the trigger. Ordered from your store on Friday - should have it tomorrow. I'm excited to see what I can make with it.
Awesome. I suggest making some basic tiles to practice getting accurate cuts on it, then the sky is the limit for what you can make.
How is cutting with the table going?
I made an ice cavern sort of like this, just a more jagged cut. Working on a Crystal version of it and using for round rooms that are to look like the inside of trees. I love this table, great tutorial, ideas flowing like lava now.
Yea, I just might have to make another (smaller) set for ice.
Are you going to grid this or is final going to end gridless?
Gridless....I only use a grid if it makes sense....as in if there is stonework that would actually have some sort of grid. For natural stuff like cave floors or grass I don't use a grid.
nice, good way to do it. I'm using 3x3's but have a bunch of 2x2's for smaller corridors, they mesh well when you don't grid
Man thank you for your videos on hobby crafting for dnd and wargaming super helpful keep kicking ass man
Hell of an undertaking you have ahead of you. May the craft gods be with you sir.
Yea....so much mod podge....carving these up was crazy quick, but the rest of the process.....oh boy.
These three tiles are....versiTILE. Ha ha ha! Fantastic!
Great job on coming up with this though. I'm excited to see where this goes.
If you would put magnets in the sidefaces of your tiles they would work even better. But all in all i love your system. Your work is very inspiring. Thanks

I've always enjoyed your take on building but this is one thing that was always missing. Awesome addition! Your core system is now complete!!!!
Yea, it's been a bit of a sore spot for me honestly, and I'm glad to get it sorted out.
I'm revamping my system for caves, this was some great inspiration.
Perfect timing! I just ordered my Proxxon table from your store, and I eagerly await its arrival to start my own modular cave system. You rock!

Nonsense! Such trivialities are ALWAYS worth obsessing over. Never underestimate the power of the dark side.... :-D
I dance the line between both worlds. I am truly a chaotic neutral crafter.

Its worth making some test pieces to see how you like it.
I cut a few test pieces, and it's going to integrate perfectly. Now I just need a cutter table.
That intro was awesome!
Perfect. I just found my next project. Keep up the great work!

Thanks :)

Totally!
Nice job! I'm thinking I will try a small set made out of thin MDF or something similar. The system looks great - and doable : )
ThanX
Such a simple idea, but it seems so genius
Thanks :D

To display a cave system in its fullest you need 6 types of tiles.

And finally you have the one with 4 walls on each side. So just a hole in the ground.
You only need the 3 side and 4 side if you want those shapes to exist as 3x3 tiles.....I don’t. You can make slightly larger versions of those shapes with the other tiles.
You are a terrain making god!
I've been meaning to get an airbrush for a while, just havn't gotten around to it yet.
Great video! 10/10
By the way,
Rails can be easily made out of square ABS plastic rods (1 mm in diameter) + some coffee sticks.
Have you ever worked with jungle tiles? As in some sort of island.
gosh darnet, i just started making the old cave tiles i'm nowhere near done with al of them but i already made some and now you make new better ones unlucky me
Yea, but those are still super useful for all sorts of things, now you just got other stuff you gotta make as well :D
yeah thats true i gues i can also use them for wargaming an for simulating mountains
I was wondering if you have any advice on how many tiles you should make for a good size modular set.
Yea I do....and I have that advice in this very video. You should watch the whole video :p
Amazing video tutorials! Everything a new GM needs to create dungeons and caverns. Have you ever used hirst moulds to create dungeon tiles?
FREAKING BRILLIANT!
THANKS!
Find myself wondering if there was a way to use a hand pump spray bottle with watered down base coat. Like one of the large kind you pump to build up pressure then spray. I think it could work as long as you kept the paint fairly thin.
Im just gonna use a small paint roller for the mod podge I think, wont be too bad.
very nice rhyme in the intro
Do you have a video about your table also? That is prime!
My room tour vid discusses it a bit, but I never made a video just about the table
Awesome stuff! I have a woodworking shop, with your experience, have you seen these tile sets made out of wood? Do they work as well or better?
Yup, a viewer actually made a set out of mdf and they look great. They would be extremely durable and nice and heavy. Honestly that is likely how I would make them for myself if I didn't have the channel where I try to keep the viewers in mind. Doing it out of wood is awesome, but not something everyone can tackle. I say go for it.
Have you ever tried that fake stone texture spray paint as a base?
Have you ever thought about using an automotive spray paint gun, it should be able to handle modpoge. Let me know if you try it and how it turns out.
Love this idea your vids are top notch man.
Nice Intro!!! Thanks for your content
This is seriously clever
Thanks :)
I would imagine that the tiles, being made of foam, might tend to shift and move around. I wonder if you would fix that using weak magnets or velcro strips.
You should figure out a way to manufacture this and sell it as a product. I'm certain the community would love this because I know I would
The problem is that nobody want's to pay premium dollar for terrain made from foam, and my time is valuable so I'd have to charge premium to make it worthwhile to sell.
That's understandable, but is there no other way to mass produce it? Like old-timey division of labor type thing? They're just so cool and you do such a terrific job with them.
Black Magic Craft You could 3-D print them
The money you would pay to buy these. You could literally kit yourself out to do it yourself ?
You could try making molds from your current tiles.
try small magnet strips to help hold the pieces together
I personally don't like the big gap that creates between tiles, and at my table its not really needed, they don't move too much on the felt and my table isn't rowdy, but it's a good option for some people.
I use small round ones myself and inbed them in to the foam with some glue. But im a newbie. I am building my first dnd campaign.
Your channel and dm scotty is helping a loy
you can use a pin drill to stick tiny magnets into the tiles, and staples to put iron in the tiles... however... it would be difficult to get all the polarities to line up, and you wouldn't want tiles that repel each other
you could use an air brush to base coat that much material
Interesting, it may be possible to make it into a kind of turn-based 3D board game if the tiles were small. You could create a Lord of the Rings game where your minis move one tile at a time, it would be a large table and could have 200+ tiles. Maybe somebody wants to do this, but, sadly, I don't have anything that can precisely cut all of those tiles, so I most likely will never do this. But, it's an idea.
very cool cave system update
Great video. Keep it up, can't wait to see the next step.
Thanks :)
Wouldn't there be "five" kinds of tiles, one with four edges preserved, painted up just like the rest, to create a large cavern room?
(barring the sixth random angly one and the seventh random wiggly one for passage walls :P )
so excited to see the video!
:D
It will be better, if made the highest with two different bottom (like color or texture), which show wall/column or another side show another lever of cave.)
pretty smart, dig the project
You had me at the rhyme bud!
INTERESTING...A mine which kobolds can takeover, lace with traps. and then the lord pays the adventurers a shite load to clean them out. You will need to develop some wall traps for those pesky hidden passages, etc...So yeah, mate, sick with 3 inches.
Yes I agree a "traps video" would be awesome!
That's been my solution for years
this is great. its kinda like the Carcassone tiles, but better becuse it's 3dD
Pure awesomeness.
thanks :)
Spray paint with Liquitex brand paint. It's water based and won't melt foam. Pricey though.
I still need to coat in mod podge first for durability, painting really isn't the issue as I tint my mod podge.
Hi, what should I use under my d&d double sided tiles so they don't slip?
Did that rail-system ever happen? I can't seem to find those video's
I can't find the video for the 1 inch thick cave parts anywhere. Does anyone have the link/video name?
Why not just prep, texture and paint the board of foam before cutting? You could put a grid on there as well, although that might mess things up with the 45° pieces.
Anyway, love your vids!
Very nice!
Dawg, this video tho. What kind of foam and where can i get that pink gold?
Welcome to the channel. This question and many more have been answered in detail for your convenience :)
Check out my Basics series to get going.
Here is the info on the foam: th-cam.com/video/0_vV6X3iHs4/w-d-xo.html
hello, great video !! I wanted to know where you found this table and if you have pictures of this one.
thank you.
I made it
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial amazing ! Do you have pictures of this and the dimension ? ^^ or a DIY ?
Great idea
Thanks :)
This is freaking GENIUS!!!! :D
Is that a krosmaster die right there in the dice tray?
Like for the intro 😂 you are an artist indeed
lol, thanks
How do I get those clean wavy cuts without a hotwire cutter
I'm not sure about this but is it possible to do the basecoat with plastidip?
