I love the old patterns! They bring back many good memories of pick out patterns and material with my Mom in the little fabric store in our small town. It was such a treat for me. Later I enjoyed picking them out for myself and sewing simple patterns. Great memories. Thank you Julia.
Hi, I have the same memories with my mom. I loved picking out patterns and then finding the fabrics. I agree-it was such a treat! Thanks for watching and sharing your story:) Julia
OMG! Before you even started talking about that last pattern cover that you had made I squeeled for joy as I had it too!! I remember it like it was yesterday. I made that top in 'Home Ec" in 8th grade and then went on to make a couple more later along with a 'maxi' skirt. We even had a 'fashion show' at the end of the year to show off our items. Thank you so much for the trip down memory lane. I LOVE these journals. What a great way to use up all those things we have been hoarding for way to long. ;)
I have been hoarding my true vintage patterns and fabrics for awhile now. Now I know what to do with them. I can’t wait to try to scan some of my fabrics after I collage some of them. Thanks for sharing. I just had a thought, if you back both the pieces of fabric for the middle with heat and bond, you can place both of the down at the same time and iron it down before stitching it and it should make it more durable. Over time I’m sure that just stitching it would cause the pattern envelope to tear more easily. If you don’t have heat and bond you can use plain Elmers Glue and hit it with an iron and it will do the same thing, just use enough to temporarily tack it down that way the glue doesn’t affect the needle going thru the glue. I use this method sometimes when quilting.
Hi, I started my sewing journey with Barbie doll patterns. I have a couple of Barbie patterns on display at my flea market shop. Love them! Thanks for watching, Julia
Hi Lovely Julia, I love these journals they are just gorgeous. My uncle was in the Royal Navy during the war and visited USA, he stayed in the Navy for many years after and I remember him bringing us some Sears magazines in 1958 from New York, my goodness I loved them especially the girls’ dresses. I wish I had those catalogues now Julia. Your gorgeous journal covers reminded me of those catalogues. What a fun project, you really explained the process so clearly, I am sure these journals will fly out Julia. I really look forward to your vlogs and seeing your happy face, your hair really suits you in that style. The weather here is starting to turn more autumnal and the evenings are drawing in so more time for sewing. I hope you are keeping well Julia, sending you all my love as always xxxxxxxxx Dorothy 🙋🏻😘❤️🌟
Hi Dorothy, I have a 1959 Spiegel catalog. I love it! I agree the dresses are amazing-and the prices!! Thank you so much for the comment on my hair. I was disparate for a change. The weather is changing fast here. We are under a storm warning. Some areas are forecasted for heavy snow. Looks like our area will get lots of rain. Great time to hide in my sewing room LOL! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Hugs, Julia
Oh my goodness Julia, that is amazing. Your new hair style looks absolutely fabulous, you are such a pretty lady any style would look lovely on you. I do hope the weather is very kind to you all, stay warm and safe. Send you all my love as always xxxxxx Dorothy 🙋🏻😘❤️🌟
Julia I love the journals. I lucked out at a thrift store. The patterns were 10 cents each and I found about 30 vintage patterns. How lucky is that . I thought about you. I’m so inspired since I found you on u-tube I want to try everything you do.
i agree!!! the Dresden plate, you need to save it for yourself. ii love it. the stains, if you want to try to get rid of them, try soaking in Oxyclean. get some Whink, rust & stain remover from Walmart, use it, the stain goes away. it is a rust remover. i love everything you do. you are really HIP!!!! we are probably the same age, too!!!
Love being reminded about the styles that I saw come and go throughout the years. I remember smock tops, granny dresses, shirt dresses and hip huggers to name a few. Who doesn’t remember Diana Riggs’ Mrs. Emma Peel and her “catsuit”. Hemlines were from micro mini to maxi among so many more fads. I remember when I first heard about panty hose and braslips. What garments were made of was very interesting, too. “Paper”, vinyl (the Wet or Slick Look) and the skyrocketing popularity of suede and leather head to toe.
Hi, I really enjoyed your comment. The 70's really had a vast array of fashion trends. What were we thinking? LOL. I also remember the "paper" dress. Wow. Thanks so much for watching! Julia
Hi Julia! Thanks so much for this tutorial. I’m a recently retired home economics teacher - excited to make some projects for ME! This combines 3 of my loves: sewing, vintage linens, and writing. You are an inspiration! I’ll order some PDFs soon.
I have all my mum’s old patterns so it will be good to use some of them. I had a very similar smock top that my mum made me back in the 70s! Thanks for a great tutorial.
I never had an interest in journal making but now im addicted to your channel. You're a creative genius. Your mind is so free. I love it!! Thank you for sharing your skill set. #Pureinspiration
I absolutely love these journals! I to absolutely love vintage lace and vintage patterns! Thank you for all of your videos and sharing your creativity with us 🤗
I’m a new subbie and am so glad I found you. I’m new at junk journaling and wanted to figure out a way to integrate sewing and my love of handwork and you have opened my imagination. Thank you.
Great idea Julia! I loved how you tucked the directions inside the pattern envelope. So clever. Thanks for all the ideas. I still want to make some journal covers out of stamped and colored canvas, or my drop cloth. Now that the weather is cooler, it's like a breath of fresh air to my imagination.
Hi Phyllis, Making journal covers are still one of my favorite projects! We are under our first winter storm watch of the year. A great time to hide in my sewing room! Thanks for watching, Julia
stitchesbyjulia Hi Julia. I figured you were included in that storm. Luckily we are in for rain, with our great Lake Michigan protecting us from the snow. Hope you don't get hit too hard. Keep me posted. Hunker down and stay warm. Hope you won't lose power. I'll be watching the weather channel.
Julia those journals are really really stunning and gorgeous and especially nice for someone who loves 💖 to sew......🧵🧵🧵 And such fun to make. I really really love 💖 the printed doilies and linens throughout too.....great video as always. Thank you so much xxx Mags
Julia I just love your work. 🙂 You are so creative and talented. Your pattern journals are fantastic I might give one a try. I’m off to the antiques store this weekend to see what goodies I can find . Wish me luck 💙
Hi Julia, I love your voice and watching your creative tutorials! Watching this one, I wonder why when you connect the patterns with trim, why you cut it before you sew the back trim on. I would think it would line up easier and leave a neater finish to just fold it up from the bottom before sewing the back. Again thanks for all the inspiration Julia 😊
I love the nostalgic feels I'm getting from these. I have a pattern that my mom and I used together to make a dress similar to your 8th grade one and this brought me right back there. Thanks for sharing!
Julia i am inspired by you and your creations. I am wanting to get a new machine since I have trouble going thru multiple layers. Wondering what sewing machine you like/have
Hi Yvonne, I really like my Janome. Mine is the Memory Craft 8200 and is on the higher end but the mid range Janome's are great too! Hope this helps, Julia
Have you laminated the pattern envelope? I was wondering if it would give it added strength. So very clever, I love this idea. I too collect vintage linens, trims and patterns.
Hi Marcia, I did not laminate the patterns but one sure could. I have used my laminator for other journals and it does add strength to the covers. Thanks so much for watching. Julia
Hi Sara, I sell the scans of the vintage linens in my Etsy Shop but at this time I do not have the fiber packs. Here is the link to the linen scans: www.etsy.com/listing/742261523/digital-vintage-linen-collection-pdf?ref=shop_home_active_12&crt=1
My friend collects the pattern envelopes for me. She has a vintage shop and wraps her customer's purchases in the pattern tissue but does not use the envelopes. Thanks for watching, Julia
YES!!!! Thank you… this is what I’ve been looking for… 😃
Hi Julia, I’m binge watching your tutorials, they are great and so helpful. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching my videos! It's comments like yours that keep me going. Julia

These are wonderful. I graduated 8th grade in 72. I loved my home economics classes. Sewing, embroidery and cooking.
Hi Eva, Sounds like we are the same age. I too loved my home economics classes. I fondly remember my teacher. Happy creating! Julia

I had to laugh at your comment. We really rocked those fashions back in the 70's! So glad you enjoyed the video and going down memory lane:)
I couldn’t bear to chuck all my seeing patterns & this is why - thank you for this

Oh, that dinner plate block!
A lot of times a soak in hydrogen peroxide will take out the stains.
But I love the idea of scan-and-print.

Good tip!
Love your journals. The quilt block is called a Dresden block. :-)

La felicito todos sus bordados están preciosos y muy buen echos
Cool.
I'd love to make some & sell at my local craft fairs. What age do the patterns & linens need to be to avoid copyrights?
Have you laminated the pattern envelope? I was wondering if it would give it added strength. So very clever, I love this idea. I too collect vintage linens, trims and patterns.
Hi Marcia, I did not laminate the patterns but one sure could. I have used my laminator for other journals and it does add strength to the covers. Thanks so much for watching. Julia
adorable!!!!
looking at that "home sweet home" look to the right. the stain looks like a bear standing up and scoping out the house for goodies! hahaha!!!
♥️♥️♥️
Do u still sell the packs of fibers? I would love some of those!
What do you use the actual pattern papers for? I mean the pattern itself...the thin tissue?
My friend collects the pattern envelopes for me. She has a vintage shop and wraps her customer's purchases in the pattern tissue but does not use the envelopes. Thanks for watching, Julia
