    I think you forgot to mention that if you cast a spell as a bonus action, you're only able to cast a cantrip using your action. Apart from that, good little condensation of all the spellcasting info!

      Question. If you cast a bonus action spell then want to jump off the tower wall and use a reaction to cast feather fall could you?

    • @Galastan
      @Galastan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@pockets8548 Reactions aren't included in the action-bonus action spellcasting economy. The only rule is that if you cast a fully leveled spell with your bonus action, if you want to cast a spell as an action it must be a cantrip. Or, if you cast a fully levelled spell with your action, you cannot cast another fully leveled spell with your bonus action. Hence you being allowed to cast Counterspell if someone attempts to Counterspell your action OR bonus action spell attempt. The only thing in question is whether or not you have your reaction available to you (i.e. made an attack of opportunity or used another reaction spell before the start of your turn)

    • @pockets8548
      @pockets8548 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Galastan I'm having trouble finding if the reaction is completely separate from your turn or does not count as it if it happens during it. I'm with saying that reactions are their own separate thing but how the bonus action rule is written it can not be done. Also it's any bonus action spell regardless if it is a cantrip so you cant fireball then also cast a bonus action cantrip

    • @Galastan
      @Galastan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@pockets8548 Here's the Sage Advice straight from Jeremy Crawford, a person who literally helped design the game:
      Q: Can you also cast a reaction spell on your turn?
      A: You sure can! Here’s a common way for it to happen: Cornelius the wizard is casting fireball on his turn, and his foe casts counterspell on him. Cornelius has counterspell prepared, so he uses his reaction to cast it and break his foe’s counterspell before it can stop fireball.

    Hi there Dungeoncast. Thank You so much for your Excellent Videos on Dungeons and Dragons. I am just starting out in Dungeons & Dragons 5e, and I am playing a High Elf Wizard. What is the difference between a known spell and a prepared spell? I would like to know exactly how many cantrips, first level spells, and second level spells does a second level wizard have as known spells. I think that it is 3 cantrips, 6 first level spells, and 2 second level spells. Then with each additional level the amount of spells increases by 2. How many prepared spells does a second level wizard have available to her--is it 2 + spellcasting ability modifier? Can I at any time swap known spells on the Wizard full list of spells if I feel a spell is not a good spell. Please respond with your answer, and Thank You.

    Question. So every spell that targets an enemy will always either require a spell attack, or a spell save? If none is specified, you do a spell attack? And do you add anything to the damage dice? Or is it the flat result of the die roll?

    • @caio2587
      @caio2587 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Noob DM here, I might be wrong: some spells demand you for a melee attack, so you just use your magic attack bonus plus a D20, you have to overcome the target's armor class. Other spells demand a saving throw. In this case, they roll a D20 plus the kind of modifier, and they roll against your spell saving DC

      Spell Components may require Verbal, Somatic, and/or Material Components, which you must provide to cast the Spell.
      As for Material Components, they can be substituted with a Component Pouch or class-specific Spellcasting Focus. This is true unless the Material Component is either:
      1. Has a specified Gold Cost
      2. Consumed
      3. Or both; Gold Cost & Consumed
      If the Material Component falls under either of these three criteria above, you must provide the material component.

    Sorry this is a super dumb question, but as a wizard, you get a certain amount of spell slots per level, right? Well, how do you get actual spells? Do you have to copy them down from an already written spellbook, or do you get to choose a certain amount as you level up? I really don’t know anything about dnd and no one else in my party does. Pls help.

    • @HyperShadic0
      @HyperShadic0 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wizards start with a spellbook that contains six 1st level spells of their choice. Every time you gain a level in the Wizard class, you can add two spells to your spellbook for free, though the spells must be of a spell level that you can cast. For example, fireball is a 3rd level spell, so you need at least one 3rd level spell slot in order to add it to your spellbook. You can also add spells to your spellbook by finding the instructions for how to cast the spell and copying it into your spellbook. This process takes 2 hours and 50 gold pieces for every level of the spell. For example, fireball would take 6 hours and 150 gold pieces to transcribe into your spell book.

    I was playing I think a Ninth level druid in a party of two fighters, a paladin divination wizard. My party got challenged by some orcs to prove ourselves worthy of their support and let us continue undisturbed. The first challenge would have been tame a few wild wolves, but before the orc leader could say that, the paladin wanted me to say hi to the orc dire wolf mount. With my insane animal handling score, the dire wolf was friendly like I was an old pal. So we auto-passed the first test. Next up. Eating contest. We had to eat and make con saves. Due to the Saladin aura, we had advantage. The fighter manages 6 rounds and was still going by the time all the orcs had passed out, due to the fighter's best stat being constition. Then a short rest later, the big test. A cage match with some custom orc captains. Anything goes as long as it's nonlethal. The wizzard was worried be cause he had 61 hp and I had 60. I told him to stay behing me and use portent and counterspell on the one half caster. I, myself, well I may have polymorphed myself into a giant gorrila. We had a rule for push-outs, too. I took one of the captains, who had been tripped by the other fighter (not the con based one) and was prone and threw the idiot 15 or so feet out of the ring. Ahh, nothing feels better than raising your strength from 8 to 24 with one 4th level spell slot. Spellcasters are broken. Sorry martials. Can you do that?

    So when attacking with a spell you throw a d20 + spell attack bonus.
    And the spell attack bonus is calculated throwing a d20 + charisma mod + proficiency bonus?
    So you throw two d20s? like one for the attack and another to calculate the spell attack bonus?

      You're talking about "up-casting" a spell. If a spell can be up-cast(not all can) the effects are written in the spell's description. Usually just increases the damage or healing
      If what u are trying to say is u want to permanently modify an existing spell that counts as homebrewing. There are no official rules for homebrewing spells so u will have to ask the dm for permission.

    So, if creature needs to roll spell saving throw, then I dont need to roll spell attack?

    • @xiongray
      @xiongray ปีที่แล้ว

      That's correct in that a creature rolling a Spell Saving Throw is not the same as a Spell Attack you make.
      Ice knife, is a good example that uses both. Upon casting, it's a Ranged Spell Attack. Then detonates for an AoE where the target's make a Saving Throw.

    What about spells a character is proficient in? I'm creating a Cleric and it's my first time playing. I read that proficiency in a specific spell means it does not consume a spell slot. Does this mean that my Life Domain Cleric can cast heal wounds indefinitely before resting? and still cast his other prepared spells?

    • @HyperShadic0
      @HyperShadic0 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Proficiency in a spell does not mean it doesn't consume a spell slot, it only means that you add your proficiency bonus to attack rolls made with that spell and to the saving throw DC of that spell if applicable. A spellcaster is automatically proficient with all spells they can cast, so they always add their proficiency bonus to those things. Cantrips can be casted an infinite number of times, and certain spellcasters get features that allow them to cast specific spells without using spell slots, but this is only the case when specifically noted. Cure Wounds always costs a spell slot to cast, and from my knowledge the cleric doesn't get any features that allow them to cast it without expending a spell slot.

    New to game, one thing Im wondering. Say you are a 1st level wizard with a wisdom of 16...if you cast a spell on a creature that allows a savings through would the formula for this example be 8 + 3 (Spell casting modifier, in the rangers case wisdom) + proficiency +2 (or does he not get the plus 2 cause a ranger proficiency is str and dex).... basically would the savings throw the creature would have to meet be a 11 or a 13?

    • @HyperShadic0
      @HyperShadic0 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The spellcasting modifier for wizards is intelligence, not wisdom. You changed your class midway through the sentence. :p
      Anyways, spellcasters are *_always_* proficient at casting spells, so you always add their proficiency bonus to their spellcasting DCs and spell attack modifier.
      In the example you listed, the final result would be 13 and not 11.

    i know i'm super late to comment here, but i'ìm about to play with my first pure caster pc and i have a couple of questions. If i got it right, i roll a d20 only to determine if i hit or not the target when the spell says it needs an attack roll. If the spell asks for a saving throw only the target rolls? I mean, i'm simply able to cast the spell? can't i miscast? Like, if i want to cast hold person do i roll anything at all? what about healing or protection spells? do i always automatically succeed on the casting?

  • @AlternityGM
    @AlternityGM 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does spellcasting require one or two free hands? Some descriptions suggest two hands. I would rule two hands unless the spell description says otherwise or when using magic items or scrolls. That means no weapons in your hands when casting most spells.

  • @ELMITLON
    @ELMITLON 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Guys, one question to see if I understood correctly
    Basically we have 3 parameters:
    Spell Save DC (your opponent has to beat this number according to the STAT modifier the spell says, for example CONSTITUTION STAT MODIFIER + D20). If the spell hits we add the 2nd parameter that is:
    Spell Attack modifier. This is a number added to our DMG to EVERY spell we cast.
    Lastly we have the 3rd parameter: Spell Attack Bonus. This means that the target DOES NOT have to make a DC throw like in the first parameter. We are the ones that have to land the hit (my spell Attack Bonus should be equal or greater than the target's AC) and then add to the DMG the spell says, the Spell Attack modifier.
    Is this correct guys?

      The spell should say so in its description. If it doesn't say (for example, cure wounds), it doesn't have one, although if you're using the spell against a player (like using presidigitation to convince them you're preparing a powerful attack), the dm will make you roll deception to succeed

    Through all the videos I've watched, and all the wikis I've looked at, and even in the PHB, I've tried to find out about concentration.
    Everyone says you can't cast two spells that require concentration at the same time. But I want to know, can you not cast *any* spells without breaking concentration?
    Last night, my friend's Warlock cast Eldritch Blast, and said she broke concentration on her Hunger of Hadar. Since then I've been trying to find out if any spell that *doesn't* require concentration, for example, casting Lightning Bolt while floating with Levitate, would break concentration.
