Great video Pope! It's really sad this video hasn't got way more views, I guess only 818 guys are getting recommended it, not generic Subaru guys like me, but your fabrication work and engineer mindset I just know from watching this one video is up there with the other big names on TH-cam, it's really sad to see this video isn't getting the attention it deserves. Almost as sad as watching a 6MT get chopped in half haha, but it'll be worth it in the future, the transmission is just so much stronger than the 5MT for any kind of track-day work its a necessity. You can get 5MT's strengthened, pinned, with uprated gears, but you can also do that on a 6MT haha. It's a real pity the lack of AWD, particularly as this was the DCCD version, which is arguably what Subaru is really known for, not their boxer-4. Hey this is going to sound absolutely nuts (because i don't know much about the 818 frame), but could you put a full STI engine/transmission in, but backwards so rear-wheel shaft goes forwards to a front R160/R180 differential, then, and here's the silly bit, with a standalone ECU tune (which you're prob. going to do anyway) and a DC starter motor with it's polarities reversed, spin the engine counter-clockwise? Perhaps the crank bearings wouldn't oil the shaft correctly or something, but i'm struggling to see where the problem would be. I guess water pump and oil pump would flow backwards, if not replaced with dry sump/electric coolant pump... hm.
Thanks so much for the kind words. I try to not get wrapped up in views, I enjoy making the videos and I’m constantly trying to improve them. I know cutting up a DCCD is hard to watch, and funny enough it’s not my first as my 5mt was also a DCCD as it was a JDM STI RA box, arguably the strongest 5mt. But I want to be able to thrash on the car and not worry about anything but the cost of tires so the 6mt is the only way to go. I don’t know if there’s a way to spin a motor backwards, or if spinning the trans and a diff backwards would be an issue as they’re designed to splash oil into a little tray that feeds certain parts. An easier way would be to use a awd transmission from a mid or rear engine car like a galardo or 911.

Is there anything Subaru won't try once? hahah Sounds like a lot of fun though Yeah in retrospect a gearbox designed for a mid-engine car would be a much better idea than trying to spin the engine the wrong way haha doh - or just an additional gear in the gearbox to reverse everything downstream there. But if it did fit in the car backwards, and you could figure out the direction problem, you'd have no problem keeping weight away from the rear axel, even if you put a bigger EG33/EZ30 in there hehehe. And i guess the engine would be easier to service too. But at that point the frame is so chopped up IDK if i'd be able to drive it on the road, not with my welding! Anyway all the best with the TH-cam your videos punch way way waaay above their weight, you get info from the best places (forums haha) and in both black and white your 818 looks absolutely mint, nicely done, a real inspiration :D
Used an adapter from Australia, made my own engine mounts, it’s tight at the firewall but it fits alright. There’s a couple of us now with rotaries in 818’s.
Just watched the video, but if the DCCD diff was still in a good shape, you've just ruined a 2K USD second hand diff🤣. New is around 5K usd ish.... Goodluck with the build though!
IDK man, i love a DCCD as much as the next guy, in fact i'd kill to have one in my Baja because with a DCCD and a TorqLocker or whatever that lockable rear diff mod for the R180 is called, you have a really capable off-roader, but even so, it was great to see inside a DCCD without all the polish and bullshit of other channels, the info on welding slag aluminium was important, and personally I didn't think before that the mod would be so easy, because i'd have thought all the extra power to the front axles would break things. So to see it's really this simple, actually pretty cool. And like, it's still out there getting used, unlike all the awesome Subis which are indefinitely parked.

Just saw this from a ffr forum post of 5 yrs, how did you adapt the trans? Require much fab work to put the rotary vs subie motor?
