    I was waiting for that cowling and silencer to fall into the water while watching your video; but I was disappointed. Actually thanks for the video. This explains the reason why my boat had the oil pump disconnected and the gas was mixed with oil when I got my "new to me" boat.

    Thanks for posting, video really helped me out. I did this to my twin 175 ocean pros and they are running better than ever with so much less smoke at startup and idle. The VRO rebuild parts were very expensive so now I just mix 50:1 and all is good. With 20yr old engines this is fine with me. I find it easier to mix the gas and oil myself due to the oil fill location on my boat. Since I generally fill up with either 100 or 150 gallons (have a 200 gal tank) I either use 2 or 3 gallons of oil and then I'm set for the weekend. Super easy.

    I did the same thing to my 70 hp Johnson. Now I can use the same fuel line for my kicker that runs on premix because my main tank is now premix. My engine smoked so much at start up when the VRO was hooked up. I hated it...it ran like crap till it warmed up.
    Now its good from the second you turn the key.

  • @JimWellman

    No, you're right, but the pump is still pumping. All I've done here is disconnect the oil hose coming into the pump (and cap it off really good) and also removed the electrical plugs coming into the pump. I know one of them is for the warning signals and I'm sure the other one has something to do with the oil system (telling it to pump more or less oil).
    The Fuel hose is still connected and the pump is mechanical, not electrical, so it still pumps fuel just fine.

    • @danielmorrison9055
      @danielmorrison9055 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Would it not pump good if the bolt you use it to small? I put a hose clamp in it but I don't think it is tight enough. My engine cut off when I was coming back in from fishing it still turns over it just won't start.

    • @JimWellman
      @JimWellman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danielmorrison9055 yeah. I had a problem when using a smaller bolt. That could be the issue. It's not hard to take the VRO apart to see if the fuel pump diagram is cracked. I suggest checking it.

    • @mottledduckiller
      @mottledduckiller 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      1DesertCop The VRO is a oil mixing sysytem/fuel pump. Most of the OMC motors have the VRO and when they start to go bad people typically just disconnect the oil and use it just as a fuel pump. This gets rid of the VRO mixing the fuel to lean/rich and gives peoole the peace of mind from the pump because if the oil stops getting fed, the motor will blow. Also a new VRO is a $400 part, this is a cheap/free fix.

If it was to ever have gone out, Quit working, I would have replaced it with a New one. I'm now going to be running a 85 Johnson 9.9 Outboard where I will be mixing the fuel & oil 50:1 and have mixed fuel before for other Evinrude /Johnson outboards the same way without any problems. Sounds like Lucas is having the same problem as I am. Once VRO is disconnected electrically, does the fuel side of VRO still operate as a fuel pump or do you need to add a fuel pump to maintain proper fuel pressure? How does the VRO still pumps fuel mechanically if the electrical leads are disconnected, I don't see any mechanical connection? Is the motor pulling fuel through a vacuum created by the motor once started? Need Help with this, Thks.

      It's a great engine. Tons of power.
      If the VRO works properly, keep it installed. If it's old, he should probably purchase a rebuild kit for it. I may have linked it in the description.
      The carbs are plastic and I've seen them warped before. This allows for leaks and overall poor performance. High temp can cause this. Just make sure it is peeing properly.
      If you have any other questions, just ask. I'll answer if I know.

  • @davidwayne2407
    @davidwayne2407 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Premixing fuel protects and lubricates the entire fuel system. 2 stroke oil now has additives to help combated the ethenol..moisture.. in today's gasoline.
    The VRO is an excellent system, but is that $500 replacement pump going to last 20+ years as the original.

  • @YC-nq1tb
    @YC-nq1tb ปีที่แล้ว

    I guess I may delete VRO from my Johnson 115 and go with pre-mixing. An additional benefit of going with pre-mixing on my boat is that I will no longer need the oil tank on my boat and therefore have an extra much-needed storage.
    Within the whole VRO pump assembly, my oil pump is still working (oil consumption verified with clear tubing). But when I turn on my key without cranking (fuel pump starts working at this point), the very front 'no oil circuit' actually gives SMOKE right away! My guess is that there may be a short circuit inside the 'no oil circuit' part ('sensor') due to some corrosion, water intrusion or other reasons.
    I'm not sure if how I can fix the 'no oil circuit' part. I can take it from my boat, but don't know I can open it up and fix the possible electric short circuit inside. So either go with pre-mixing or buying a new whole VRO pump. I only burn about 70 gallons of fuel annually. So I guess I'm going to be fine with 4-5 times of premixing every year, and not spending $400 on a new VRO pump.

    will this cause the fuel pump to go bad? I disconnected the oil part of the VRO when I got my boat 2 summers ago, but now the fuel pump is bad. won't it constantly be trying to suck oil that it's not getting? I would replace with a regular fuel pump but I don't want to jag around with the bracket issue, so I was just going to replace with another VRO, but won't it just go bad again?

    • @JimWellman
      @JimWellman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The fuel pump will continue to work whether or not the oil is hooked up. I had mine in this condition for quite some time without issue, however I ended up installing a brand-new VRO pump a few years later. I was happy with the decision to go back to the VRO pump.

    Hi jim, I just bought a boat with the same motor same year and and replaced the power pack optical sensor plugs and wires. I'm having a problem my motor will run great then all of a sudden when I'm running 3/4 to wide open throttle the boat will bog down and pretty much do nothing when I hit the throttle. It will still idle fine also I noticed if I hook the motor up to my 6 gallon temp tank the motor will clear up and run good again. There isn't any trash in the fuel tank do you think this could be my fuel pump or possibly my fuel line ?

    • @JimWellman
      @JimWellman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definite possibilities. Have you tried to pump the bulb on the fuel line when this happens? If it starts ruining again, the fuel pump may be your problem. And the fuel pump is part of the VRO.
      Another possibility is that the carburetors may have a leak. Or if you have a fuel water separator, it may be loose or have a leak at the seal.

I told service man a probably of cracked head or etc... come to find out the motor was fine. But the problem was the fuel line was calapsed. I think the vacuum running it hard would make the fuel line calapse qnd it would eventually stop running. Anyway it's probably fuel line.

    My boat recently broke down on the water and we had to be towed. The fuel bulb was cracked so we bypassed the bulb straight to the engine. We were able to get her started, but as we ran the boat it started losing power in spurts eventually died on us. We were able to get it started 1 more time in which smoke started shooting out of the back, we shut it down and were unable to start it after that. We had to be towed to the docks. When I cleaned the carbs they were full of fuel and oil mixture which seemed to contain more oil than fuel. Other than that they were pretty clean i side. After putting the carbs back on and starting the engine, unfortunately there is still allot of smoke coming out of the back. I ran the engine for a couple of minutes, off and on for a total of around 4-6 minutes. I have a 1996 Johnson 2 stroke outboard with a seperate VRO Oil tank. • @JimWellman
      @JimWellman  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      I switched back for 1 reason, well maybe 2, but 2 doesn't really count.
      Reason 2 is so I don't have to mix any longer.
      Reason 1 is that my old pump was just not keeping the suction it needed to work properly. I rebuilt the thing , but the plastic parts appeared slightly warped and I believe this was preventing the engine from keeping prime. The main symptom was that the motor would try to die on me...unless I went to the back and pumped the bulb about every 20 seconds.
      I decided to bite the bullet and purchase a new VRO which fixed everything.
      You do need to make sure the oil side is capped real tight if you disconnect it. Mine worked for a couple weeks with only that bolt in it, but then I put a regular plug in it. That worked for a week or so, but then the old problems came back as stated above. That's when I purchased the new VRO pump and I'm glad I did.

    After you disconnect the VRO. If you have an air leak on the oil line coming into the VRO pump will your fuel pump quite working? I bought my boat with the VRO already taken off and discovered the hose was open going into the VRO. I also reconnected the plug not knowing why the were unplugged. After seeing your video I have blocked the hose and disconnected the electrical connections. Unfortunately I added an electric fuel pump in line to get me up and running. @@tracymathis8855 this shouldn't affect the water pump. The water pump is mechanical and operates as a result of the shaft spinning. Shouldn't be affected by lack of power to any component. Something to note about the water flow is that the thermostat is designed to allow water to flow out of the engine once the engine is at a specific temperature or above that temperature. Your engine is designed to operate at a specific temperature and therefore the thermostat maintains that temperature by opening or closing depending on how hot or cold your engine is.
      I had an old mercury that always seemed to take forever to warm up. Once it did, the thermostat opened and water would flow.
      Another possibility is that your thermostat is bad and therefore locked in the closed position. It is very simple to replace a thermostat.

People just need to know how to properly maintain the VRO, and it will reward you with no problems. Just requires more maint. than other systems! TIP: ALWAYS CHECK THE VRO FILTER AND REPLACE ANY OLD HOSES THAT ARE CRACKED! People seem to think its ok to have the tank exposed to the sunlight... bad move as it cracks the hoses in record time
