the moment the first enemy showed up i i thought it was over, but those buildings have more than one hp!
the reality is that Wraiths are actually decent at the anti-air role, its just that in most of wings of liberty they arent good because you either have really hostile-to-air defenses, or just no air enemies to fight with them. have 8 wraiths escort 16 banshees and theres basically nothing the game can actually do though. the Hyperion's Tac Fighters in HOTS are actually the Wraith C, the version without the ground laser.
have 3 science vessels hang out in the back as a healer base while you wait for energy on the wraiths and banshees to regen and you can push budgets super far
@@F14thunderhawk Yes and no. Yes, you can sit back for 30 minutes to create the paper fleet with the worst hp to money spent ratio. Only some campaign missions are timed, so that is not the problem. The problem is that StarCraft is a strategy game and it kind of expects you to learn strategy and min-max your production, not create meme builds. The only place for challenge runs is on TH-cam channels, and that niche is currently filled.
@@fare-5174 ...Challenge runs are fun, and the SC2 campaign is honestly not that hard, even on Brutal. It's a single player experience, there is literally no reason not to challenge yourself. That's why Nightmare difficulty has players who don't stream it.
Also hp is arguably a unit's *least* important stat when fighting against campaign AI. *Especially* as Terrans, who can heal between (and during) fights. Like, marines have an HP ratio of 1.1 (after shields), lings are 1.4, and zealots are 1.5. But marines are the best mineral-dump unit by far, followed by lings, and zealots are pretty much unquestionably the worst.
Wraiths can cloak, too, so if you can snipe the enemy detection their HP becomes totally irrelevant.
The big problem with wraiths isn't HP. It's that their ground attack is supposed to be their big advantage vs. the viking... but their ground attack is so laughably weak that it might as well not exist.
Meanwhile in coop you have Swann's wraiths, which can actually do very good DPS... And despite still being very fragile, they're probably his best unit if you know how to use them.
@@fare-5174 I mean, people can play the game however they want even if they use sub optimal builds
@@F14thunderhawkwraiths are at at best mid at anti air role, the problem is anti air flyer only deals with anti air, now the abylity to stealth makes them able to get a ton of value on paper, but if you instead used vikings you'd go much faster, cheaper and they can land so they can deal with random spore crawlers and missile turrents
10:45 "We're gonna mine a lot of minerals though. That part's gonna be ok." **mineral field depleted**
This is a great showcase of how bad the Wraith is. It's crazy how Grant is constantly out of money, while also being unable to one-shot even a single missile turret.
While true, for some reason sc2 have the huge capital ship mission have some of the worst income in the whole game. Here it 6 mineral patches at a time tops.
@@darmorel549 Probably to make it a challenge, and to require strategy. Or else it would just be max out easily and then dominate everything in your way.
My favorite thing about wraiths is that a literal marine has more anti ground dps. All that fancy equipment for the burst laser and a regular gun would have done the job better
the wraith is really ruined by the cloak.
because it has cloak is has to be one of the most expensive units WOL terran has and require a tech lab, and because it can shoot up and down without requiring a fusion core it has to be weaker than the banshee. weaker than the banshee + more expensive means that even cloaked its TTK per-mineral just does not justify its existence.
remove its cloak, make it the cheapest air unit instead of the second-most-expensive, and make it reactor-able and it may be decent. if the enemy got access to stuff like viking AOE or banshee rocket pods it could afford to have its cloak replaced with a micro-yamato like the Mengsk BC gets but doing way, way less damage to reward players for critical massing wraiths by letting them micro-target down specific enemies the way you do with, say, the LOTV annihilators
@@tabula_rosa alternatively buff the wraith ground attack speed to compensate for the pitiful damage it has and maybe increase the armor pen on the missiles a bit more to make it into a hard counter heavy air. essentially, just give it a niche so it's playable.
Its amazing that in the mission that lets you get 200 supply worth of Carriers you can't get more than 50 supply of Wraiths at one time
I think the math works out to something like two Wraiths costing as much as a carrier(fact check that), taking Half the supply and having 25% of the stats. This unit was only worked on enough to have it be functional for the release and not a second more XD
Never ask:
A woman - her age
A man - his salary
Grant - what happened to factory.
Funny thing, because it seems the factory has never been there in the first place! ^^
He tore down his barracks, but he never started with a factory, which is ironic given the siege tank exists
16:50 Grant: "It's just turrets all the way down, huh? Hmm...."
Scv: "Bad News?"
10:40 "I am surprisingly high on gas"
Careful Grant, you don't want to end up like Stetmann.
Me: "Oh fun! Which mission was Templar's Charge again?"
Grant: "The carrier mission-"
Me: "Oh no. Oh god no. I see why this has haunted him."
24:10 I love how this clunky mobile platform on a gear track can move around faster than a fighter jet
'I'm surprisingly high on gas'. Uhm Grant don't do gas, it turns you into a Teldarim!
He's gonna build Giant Gary Gaming
Grant: i could do another starp- oh i need a factory
Also Grant: ill go double armory instead OH NO I NEED A FACTORY😂
This was absolutely a challenge run. Definitely what I had in mind when I made this campaign.
Ah yes shadow toast, everyone's favorite xD
Finally we and Grant can sleep peacefully knowing this challenge has been completed
"This not easy, despite how easy I make it look"
At times, you invert the difficulty to a viewer tbh; You will be finding it very difficult and struggling, but it seems like you just slowly and steadily stomp, but then you will have a really easy time but it looks like it was a struggle
Ofc sometimes you struggle and we can just tell, and sometimes it's easy and we can just tell, but it happens a lot for rts games with you Grant
I legit smiled when you called us cute ❤
This demonstrates how inefficient wraiths are. No wonder it's a challenge.
Wraith are a unit where Confederate military officials stole everything they could xD
Watching him slowly laser that Barracks instead of taking off and shooting it with missiles, or taking off and floating off somewhere on the map to die, was so painful xD
6:52 I did NOT expect that grant I laughed so hard XD
I was so sure it wouldn't work, when I saw you had just a few wraights left, but then bam, masterplan just goes off flawlessly. What a fun way to win it. I always feel like cloak is under utilized in SC2, due to how common detection is and how hard it is to micro against it.
I think SC 2 (just in campaign, god forbid in multiplayer) should have some radar suppression missiles. Maybe bult like nukes, having area like scan (because it basically anti-scan) and launched without Ghost targeting (or maybe with, but on greater range and with tiny delay). Don't harm anyone, just temporarily make all detectors not detect, for like 15-20 seconds.
A saga four years in the making!
In the beginning: Grant: I have a lot of gas and no minerals. Also Grant: lets prioritize gas pickups. :D Great job though!!
I was not expecting THAT to be how it ended. Good lord, Wraiths are terrible, despite Grant's Herculean efforts.
I love these random little one off videos, sometimes even more than the proper series, but I get that coming up with something completely different to do every day would be almost impossibly difficult, love the serieses as well, peace!
Holy hell Grant, referring to the challenge runs as something that happened a while ago makes me feel old, didn't know I'd been around that long.
Grant. HOW.
This should not be possible!
(Brilliant play, thank you for keeping my eyebrows semi-permanently raised through the video. The wraiths fought you every step of the way, but you fought harder!)
This was a wonderful deep cut into GGG lore. Glad you were able to conquer the demon mission!
31:55 Grant is stuck on a control group of 12 wraiths from here on out...
*flashback to SC1*
Me: NOOOOO!
The first attack is at 5:00, and then it's every 3:00. Adjust by 20 seconds for every time you use a time stop.
Always a pleasure to watch your videos man.
Would you ever consider doing the one mission you missed from Wings of Liberty Reversed? You never played the Mobius Factor.
The title just exudes the energy of this video
Dang Jimmy, are those wraiths?
We’ve been awaiting for these lunch orders for a long time.
Finally with the moving platform stun we have an answer to the menace that is landed vikings
I know it's a Wraith only mission challange, though I feel like having some Science vessels for their nanorepair would be handy. Free healing for your wraiths when needed.
"What if I made a unit so useless that it'd made every other unit look unstoppable by comparison? Yes, I'm a genius" - Steve Wraith
When I see title and thumbnail, I expected to see how you MC every enemy wraith. But that one implementation is fine too.
I liked when he said "it's wraithing time!" and the wraithed all over the place.
Thanks for the fun an being up to the challenge! ^^
the 16:58 REALLY caught me off guard LOL
what's crazy is that regenerative biosteel would have really helped on this mission
I always knew wraiths were OP!
Ah yes the best kind of wraith… a battle cruiser
Can you use the delayed orbital cast to stop a mule at a location that doesn’t have vision anymore?
I feel like he could've gotten two science vessels for healing thrown in, haha
And taking out turrets with SCVs is fine, too
At least the enemy doesn't have hellfire batteries xD
This seems like a good mission for biosteel, just for long-term utility and money saving.
Grant can do any challenge! he just needs time to figure out a solution (sometimes the time is 4 years, which is okay).
the entire time watching this I kept thinking, you know if you didn't have to repair aka Bio steel you'd have more money for more Wraiths, not to mention wanting to slow play it is perfect for Bio steel
There’s a staggering lack of defensive ravens on this mission
Regenerative Bio-steel would actually be useful here with the gaps in combat sesions 🤔
if not for the lack of energy through out the mission...
I mostly put regenerative above energy. It helps saving money on repairs.
And seeing how Grant is always out of money, having auto repair really would help
@ That's a good point but I still think energy is better cause of how slow regen steel is. keep in mind if he had less energy he would have to do more fighting without cloak and he'd take more dmg.
@@peterjohansson1828 I also agree with your point.
Overall, the regenerative vs energy is mission dependant.
So lets make it more complex
It will probabaly be apples tonoranges though, if we dont time the differences on how long it takes to do a campaign and or mission.
On a side note: I like the fact that the upgrade does not appear to be a straightforward "A is better than B" upgrade
We are back baby hell yah I love it Damm I am hyped
Guess who the greatest starfighter in the fleet is? - Yours Truly
Proof that Wraith is the most powerful unit!
No spoilers, i am only at 31:14 , but if it somehow doesnt work, maybe regen biosteel is worth it, energy doesnt have speed up regen from that grade, and with how money heavy this mission is, maybe you can just regenerate hp and get enough profit from it. Its almost 30 minutes into mission, with a bunch of wraiths you surely would get at least 4 Wraiths worth of regeneration.
Watching this video caused me physical pain. The Wraith is so terrible.
So this shows the problem with the Wraith, which is kind of similar to the problem with the Diamondback, but even worse. You have a flimsy, inefficient fighter with decent speed and the cloak. The cloak either trivializes combat, or makes no difference because of detectors. Hit and runs are not that strong in campaign, and for some reason the Wraith's missile was split to two attacks (in SC1 it was one) and most of it is against armored targets too, making them inefficient at their job.
And still you doorcimated them :D
Hey, you missed the Bonus ... jk, awesome job!
14:12
Is it just me or did Grant's "goin' up" sound a lot like the C&C Generals USA Dozer's voiceline?
Now, do it with Vikings.
Did this ancient challenge run come back to mind because of 7thAce? They mentioned it in one of their 1hp SC:Broodwar videos, I think.
hell yeah !🎉 thanks grant !
This wraith challenge's been haunting you, huh?
23:49 Is he related to the lead singer of System of a Down?
are you sure bio-steel regeneration whatever its called would not be a good choice? it saves money for repairs
8:30 Raynor, stop your... wraiths? You're attacking with wraiths??
Nothing is as busted as mules, no matter if you are playing co-op raynor, vs or campaign.
Bad idea I just had. Mod that switches the wraith and bc. Which is better bc sized wraith, or wraith sized bcs?
Yey!
You onow you can just... float barracks, right?
Regenerative biosteel would have been so good
Nah the extra energy was more important
@@52flyingbicycles You might be right but it seems like the wraith count would have been significantly higher over the course of the game if they'd been slowly healing between fights, which would increase kill speed and thus lead to fewer deaths and an even higher wraith count, and thus less energy needed for cloak.
That was fun
Sometimes I forget just how awful vanilla Wraiths are, lmao. I've been spoiled by too many mods where they're good. You did an incredible job of making such an awful composition fun to watch!
The wraith is just so bad, until this day i ask myself what was the creators thinking when they made it...
Holly molly
Gg was fun
I'm not great at the game but I've been trying to do wings of liberty with firebats and wraiths in the hard difficulty
and it is veeeeeeery hard x_x
Is this grants redemption arc? will we finally see All in pacifist? The second half of lotv blindfolded? and every other challenge grant started an never finished?
Grant has done the back end of lotv on stream ages ago. Thing is he did them individually and not back to back because like 5 of the six final levels have random uncontrollable variables that make them tedious to attempt over and over again until it goes right and it would be pain to not take a break in between the slog that each of the final levels are.
@@brennantmi5063 really? would have been great if he edited them together for a sequal.
Man this is an instant GGG classic, my god wraiths are bad
Regenerative biosteel all the way
Tomahawk ?
Paper airplanes OP, plox nerf.
I don’t like this video. Harumph, good sir, harumph!
I really think you would have been better off with like two science vessels to heal your wraiths instead of having to spend resources repairing them.
He'd also be better off without using only wraiths.. but that was kind of the point of the challenge my guy. It wasn't wraiths AND science vessels only, it was just wraiths only.
(Workers and orbital command abilities don't count towards unit comp for obvious reasons)
These new RTS games need to come out sooner Grant is running out of content
what happend to the 7 player vods?
First
Fifth!
hell yeah !🎉 thanks grant !
