This might be the most fun I have had since Bad Company 2 online. In fact... I have contacted my old BFBC2 squad... see if we can get the gang back together!!
you played 3hours and you feel it is amazing, yeah we all have had that experience with latest battlefront or 100 other videogames in the past decade. Thing is, will this game survie 1 year in the current market ?
The power converting feature of the TIE fighter really surprised me. I thought that with the panoramic cockpits and shields the X and A Wings would have a massive edge over the TIE fighters, but I actually prefer the power converting over all of those. It's just so satisfying to boost, drift by the enemy, convert power to weapons, hit them still drifting with a laser barrage and then shift power back and boost away. Only thing that is really bothering me especially in VR is how much the instrument panel of the TIE fighters obstructs my vision, I started preferring to track enemies sideways instead of the usual up/down.
I just came to say that I’ve always been into flight games, and always loved Star Wars since I was a kid. I’ve always wanted something to put my skill into and finally it’s here. I’ve already destroyed 2000 fighters and have a 5 kd on dogfight.. and the fact that I still feel I have it in me makes me love this game even more. It’s just what I wanted.
It definitely looks interesting, but I'm probably going to wait a few weeks to see if EA tries to pull something after all the positive reviews saying that there aren't any microtransations, etc. have rolled in. I hope I'm wrong, but this is *EA* we're talking about.
Did they fix the controls from the test version? I was using an xbox pad on PC and the power management system often didn't register my input. I also remember issues with the speed boost engaging when I hadn't called for it too. Was really frustrating to play. I was initially excited for this game but is now relegated to pick it up when drops in price for the campaign mode.
#askeck The Star Wars Legends Universe is massive and has got me confused as to where to start. Can you suggest some good books/comics which I can begin with?
you could definitly go in chronological order, but i would suggest reading one of those time spanning story books, like the essential chronology. its an older book, but its amazing. they help to give a quick intro to everything, and you can figure out what you like from there. bookseries wise, thrawn trilogy, or the x-wing series of books covering rogue and wraith squadren. welcome to the best, and biggest, part of star wars 😄
The 'Tales' Anthologies are a lot of fun. The content does vary in quality, although to this day 'A Barve like that' remains one of the best short stories I've ever read. Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina Tales from Jabba's Palace Tales of the Bounty Hunters
EU/Legends Outbound flight Heir to the Empire X-wing series Canon Aftermath series And all the new Thrawn books I'm a bit bias towards Thrawn because he is my favorite character in the SW universe, I was a fan of his before anyone even knew who he was. Seems like a lot of people have jumped on since he was in Rebels.
i managed to get it up and running yesterday and played for ~1hr - there’s definitely a lot to learn in terms of controls, but I reckon I can configure my Thrustmaster HOTAS to do most of what’s needed. Compared to the x-wing/tie fighter series, it seems much ‘busier’, but more forgiving.
I pre-ordered this game and I am so happy I did. No loot boxes no micro transactions is more than enough for me to pre-order :) and I am a HUGE fan of X-wing vs Tie Fighter and those games. I had so much fun with flying around in my tie defender doing missions for thrawn lol (Old tie fighter) It was great. I glad they made it like it.
@@artevius It wasn't THAT long ago. Console games were always way more expensive than their PC equivalents. Than, for unknown reasons, publishers decided, rather than make things better for console owners, they should 'equalise' things by unnecessarily ripping PC owners off.
Only issue for me is I CANNOT do first person ship flying. It makes my eyes hurt and carsick. I have to be able to do third person or this is unplayable for me
The game looks amazing and I really really want to play it. But somehow I keep on feeling like there gonna be some stupid catch from EA's side, I really hope there wont be, but I will wait a week or 2 before I buy the game at least.
This. Ive been watching gameplay for literally this. I was so happy when I saw scraping a little paint wasn't going to be an instant kill like Battlefront 2
If you are on Xbox you can set your time to newzeland and play squadrons early! Also for some reason even though I pre orderd it I can get me pre order items
I know people love to hear that there are “no microtransactions” and “no loot boxes” but... I will say that it’s tough for a development team to continually create new content for a game if there isn’t any kind of financial incentive for them to do so. I’m hoping that I’m wrong but I get a bad feeling that the content that’s currently in this game might end up being all the content we ever see. If you want to see more starfighter skins and more customization options appear in the future... well, that might not happen and the fact that people begged them to not have any kind of loot boxes in this game is partially responsible for that.
LOL have you forgot the last 30 years of video games? Yeah used to be called expansions. Then scum lord ceos cut up expansions into bite sized pieces and charged the same price.
I was disappointed when I saw the gameplay. As someone whose childhood was X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, I was hoping for more opportunities for one-off missions that you would team up with other players for; something more substantial than just, "go here, blow this up". The lack of variety -- and maybe this will be corrected in the future -- is just hugely disappointing. I feel like once you've played the multiplayer modes for a couple hours and wiped out the campaign, what else is there to do? Until they launch more game modes, I'm gonna have to take a hard pass.
“This is a discount game”. You are the 2nd dude saying that. Were you told to mention this as part of the narrative? Is it discount bc its not selling for half the monthly rent in a developing country?
Being fair when games are expected to start costing double that, and right now are at least usually what, $60? It does feel like a discounted game in todays market, which is something that is appealing.
Can confirm, this game on controller can sometimes feel a bit clustered. I have been playing double claw grip for years and even I find this game sometimes requires me to hit more buttons in 1 to 2 seconds than I am comfortable with. While this game is a blast, I would imagine a flight stick is a huge bonus. Also having VR in Rebel ships helps a lot. Its not really useful in ties since their cockpit window is the size of the back end of a pencil. So if your looking for something fun, pick it up. If your looking to be competitive. I highly recommend a flight stick and VR. Its similar to racing in that regard. I play a lot of racing games and I use a wheel. Having a wheel in games where its well supported is a HUGE advantage.
Give it a couple weeks, that’s what these gaming companies do now. They say “no micro transactions” to get good reviews then 2-3weeks after launch they start adding micro transactions
I highly doubt this will happen. Take Fallen Order for example, that game was received very highly and the devs there never added any micro transactions
Aussie Stalin kinda a bad example because they’re coming from completely different studios and fallen order was single player only. Don’t forget this is an EA game and only a couple weeks ago they did this with UFC4
Man Unido I know fallen order is a bad example, but UFC4 is equally as bad of one because it’s not part of the Star Wars franchise which has infinitely more exposure to the public. Also, with the mess bf2 made with micro transactions, I highly doubt Squadrons or any future Star Wars game will go further than cosmetic only transactions
Guns of Icarus online only had about 6 maps and 5 ships and it kept lots of people playing engagingly for more than 3 years with multiple thousands of hours because the depth and coop/vs aspect of it was so deep and engaging.
Thanks for the review. As I expected, it's definitely not for me. Just a 6h-7h solo campaign and everything else online deathmatch just doesn't cut it for me. Maybe I'll try it later, when prices drop down to 5€ or something.
Im excited as well as nervous for this game. On one hand I love star wars and really love the idea of a new age flight sim since I didnt get to play xwing or tie fighter as a kid. However im not really into competitive mulitplayer and Im sort of afraid the skill gap is going to get the jump on me within days after release...but either way im gonna give it my best shot and try to have some fun along the way. Thanks for the vids and coverage Eck. Heres to Vanguard Squadron, wars over imps!
Can't seem to edit my previous comment to add something but the game's model reminds quite a bit of Mechwarrior Online which I played for 3000+ hours and as such I am super excited! Hoping for some buddies to buy Squadrons to have a steady roster of teammates to get better with over time.
Great video, squadrons looks very cool. I ended up actually buying X-Wing Alliance instead, it's cheaper and also seems to have more content on offer. Might pick up squadrons later, but Alliance has been really fun!
I’ve only played like 7 hours in total I think? And I already have 4 ships kitted out to the max of what I want and a legendary skin with full outfit for my new republic pilot. Progression has been really nice.
One important question... Is there offline singleplayer skirmish option? And how much fighters/ships are flying in battle? Since I have PS4 Pro and VR, I'm completely hyped for it!
This game is incredible. I've wanted a starfighter-like game for years. It may not be very deep but what's there is amazing. It wouldn't be hard for them to use this as a base and create dlc or a sequel.
So exited about this game, best SW 'cockpit' game since the X-Wing series in the 90's. We are going to make button caps set available soon for our Game Commander device. Would you like to do a review when it's available ?
There's also a Fleet Battles (solo) player vs AI mode, which is pretty good (you can tailor the experience) and you will earn XP by playing it. Also, a pretty decent Training mode where you can play solo vs AI. These modes never get mentioned.

Anyone else having problems with the aviator controls preset? It doesn't let you pitch and roll at the same time or it does it incredibly slowly making it unplayable
you forgot that EA patches in the microtransactions after the game/reviews are out a couple weeks
Hasn't happened yet
Finally, some CQC that isn't Elite or SC
it looks like crap...id rather play elite on my commodore -64...( god i loved that game)
@@autopartsmonkey7992 ?
Id still rather play Elite CQC, but at least in this game you can find a match lmao
@@DankGank agreed
Ummm what CQC, elite & SC?
Finally, NO micro transactions. Thank you EA for not milking the public and ruining a game for your own profits.
I’m hoping that they add more than just starship battle like maybe they could add cargo runs or something like that
Imagine having a death star run both death star 1 and 2
@@lucasdouglas6684 would be cool but game isn't live service so no updates
Who do I petition for 3rd person mode?
Also needs
b wings for rebels, gunboats for imps
T-wings for rebels, avengers for imps
Ewing's for rebels, missile boats for imps
Etc etc
I just question the replay-ability of a game like this.
Its core game mode is multiplayer.. So like infinite?
Well people still play the X wing series and half have no multi player at all. If it's a great game people will replay it over and over.
@@ninjelephant Its fighter squadrons from battlefront but with added layers...nothing special. for how long is that going to be entertaining? for me personally not very long. just screams repetitive gameplay
Khapri I still play star fighter assault in battlefront 2 and this game is a way better version
Since it's pvp centered replayability for me would be Zero.
Idk how your vr is that clear mine is blury as hell even with calibration
One more day, I'm so excited!!
I'm only about 4/5hrs into multiplayer. Starting to get to grips... not had many kills but I play the objective a lot.
But man, when I get a kill.... the fucking thrill of it!!
This might be the most fun I have had since Bad Company 2 online.
In fact... I have contacted my old BFBC2 squad... see if we can get the gang back together!!
I cannot keep still how excited I am to be honest. Can't wait to get my hands on this game.
Oh man, all of that yawing around instead of rolling over and pulling back to turn like in atmosphere is gonna fuck with me for a bit
you played 3hours and you feel it is amazing, yeah we all have had that experience with latest battlefront or 100 other videogames in the past decade.
Take a shot every time he plugs his second channel
I just came to say that I’ve always been into flight games, and always loved Star Wars since I was a kid. I’ve always wanted something to put my skill into and finally it’s here. I’ve already destroyed 2000 fighters and have a 5 kd on dogfight.. and the fact that I still feel I have it in me makes me love this game even more. It’s just what I wanted.
Me: Downloading the Game ATM
Also me: still has to wait 9 hours to play it. FML
Lmao
Damn that blows. My downloaded in a glad hour
why does this review not have any mention of the framtime issue that plagues VR, despite it being clearly visible in the video
It definitely looks interesting, but I'm probably going to wait a few weeks to see if EA tries to pull something after all the positive reviews saying that there aren't any microtransations, etc. have rolled in.
I hope I'm wrong, but this is *EA* we're talking about.
EA loves doing that it’s so underhanded it’s why I also wait a few weeks before buying
There's a reason they are called Evil Arts XD
@@ranaghast EA is a pathway to many forms of monetization that some consider to be...unnatural.
Hopefully there are cosmetic micro transactions
@@danieltravelstead I hope it's only cosmetic.
Is the camera only first person in the cockpit or can you go 3rd person?
Is this going to become the new Battlefront 2015, where everyone wants them to add Clone Wars content? Haha.
My goodness imagine flying the ARC 170 in VR
Eck, we've picked up a new group of signals. Enemy fighters coming your way.
Hello! Hope you're having a nice day, whoever is scrolling through the comments
Hey thanks! I hope you have a nice day too. Enjoy the weather if you can.

The Star Wars Legends Universe is massive and has got me confused as to where to start.
Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina
Tales from Jabba's Palace
Tales of the Bounty Hunters
The Darth Bane trilogy. Trust me, it's so fucking good if you're looking for a good story of the Dark side.
EU/Legends
Outbound flight
Heir to the Empire
X-wing series
Canon
Aftermath series
And all the new Thrawn books
I'm a bit bias towards Thrawn because he is my favorite character in the SW universe, I was a fan of his before anyone even knew who he was.
Seems like a lot of people have jumped on since he was in Rebels.
DARK EMPIRE and the KotOR comics are fantastic. Also you can't go wrong with the Thrawn trilogy and the Hand of Thrawn duology.
i managed to get it up and running yesterday and played for ~1hr - there’s definitely a lot to learn in terms of controls, but I reckon I can configure my Thrustmaster HOTAS to do most of what’s needed.
Compared to the x-wing/tie fighter series, it seems much ‘busier’, but more forgiving.
No B-wings tho. 😢 Hope they add it later.
I know right!? They're my favorite as well
Well, sorry I’m late, but you got your wish
I pre-ordered this game and I am so happy I did. No loot boxes no micro transactions is more than enough for me to pre-order :) and I am a HUGE fan of X-wing vs Tie Fighter and those games. I had so much fun with flying around in my tie defender doing missions for thrawn lol (Old tie fighter) It was great. I glad they made it like it.
This is how much games used to sell for. It’s how much they SHOULD still sell for.
bro, inflation
@@artevius It wasn't THAT long ago.
Console games were always way more expensive than their PC equivalents. Than, for unknown reasons, publishers decided, rather than make things better for console owners, they should 'equalise' things by unnecessarily ripping PC owners off.
I played through squadrons last night and it was easily one of my favorite games of this year
No game makes me wish I had VR and Hotas more than this one. Microsoft Flight who?? Never heard of it.
Only issue for me is I CANNOT do first person ship flying. It makes my eyes hurt and carsick. I have to be able to do third person or this is unplayable for me
Still unsure. Maybe, maybe not.
Game plays like a dream in vr.. layered and single player on veteran mode is a crazy challenge
The game looks amazing and I really really want to play it.
But somehow I keep on feeling like there gonna be some stupid catch from EA's side, I really hope there wont be, but I will wait a week or 2 before I buy the game at least.
Yep same mate
If done right, EA may redeem themselves with this one
Same
looks amazing? you need new glasses. it looks like play station 1 graphics...just horrible.
@@autopartsmonkey7992 How the hell is this PlayStation 1 graphics
Woah you can actually accidently bump into things and not immeaditely explode thats cool
This. Ive been watching gameplay for literally this. I was so happy when I saw scraping a little paint wasn't going to be an instant kill like Battlefront 2
The game is excellent as it is, we definitely do not need another "live services" here today-gone tomorrow rental.
The multiplayer sound similar but better compared to Ace Combat 7 multiplayer (FFA or TDM, and no VR).
Oh after Walking Dead epic fail, I'm glad this turned out well
If you are on Xbox you can set your time to newzeland and play squadrons early!
I think this game has incredible esports potential
Thanks, mang. Good stuff. Informative and well put together. Appreciated.
Bro I might have a heart attack from hype
There are no microtransaction *for now*
Give it a couple weeks, that’s what these gaming companies do now. They say “no micro transactions” to get good reviews then 2-3weeks after launch they start adding micro transactions
I hope they add microtransactions for cosmetics for ships/pilots
I highly doubt this will happen. Take Fallen Order for example, that game was received very highly and the devs there never added any micro transactions
Aussie Stalin kinda a bad example because they’re coming from completely different studios and fallen order was single player only. Don’t forget this is an EA game and only a couple weeks ago they did this with UFC4
I know EA has a bad reputation, but you seriously need to have more faith in them. Its clear they've learned from BF2 and JFO
1. Step: like the video befire even watching the first sekond
campaign 6-7 hours?
Guess I go back playing TIE-fighter...
Thanks for the review.
As I expected, it's definitely not for me.
Just a 6h-7h solo campaign and everything else online deathmatch just doesn't cut it for me.
Maybe I'll try it later, when prices drop down to 5€ or something.
Bought this for the squad dynamic, literally have not encountered one other person with a mic yet. Played about 4-5 hours
You expected random people to work together in a competitive multiplayer game?
Yeah, multiplayer is fun, but the aspect of working together seems to drive the player base off the rails.
You sound like Walter jr. from Breaking Bad on 0.5x speed
Wtf, kinda accurate lol. Breakfast anyone?
Good the hear this. I finally broke down and pre-ordered it on Steam last night.
I felt like a little kid wanting to fly in a xwing in vr. It's great. They just need to keep the politics out. Other than that, it's fun.
As a VR owner and Star Wars fan I feel like this game is a must buy for me!
No views, 8 likes. Yes, this is the TH-cam I know
Can't seem to edit my previous comment to add something but the game's model reminds quite a bit of Mechwarrior Online which I played for 3000+ hours and as such I am super excited! Hoping for some buddies to buy Squadrons to have a steady roster of teammates to get better with over time.
So jelly of those who’ve already started playing this! Have to wait till after work!
Can't wait to get this going with my HOTAS and PSVR.
What controls do you all play this game with? Joystick? Controller? K&M?
I wish they'd fix the HOTAS dead zone issue, but for now I'm able to compensate. Other than that it's been a really solid VR experience.
There's also a Fleet Battles (solo) player vs AI mode, which is pretty good (you can tailor the experience) and you will earn XP by playing it. Also, a pretty decent Training mode where you can play solo vs AI. These modes never get mentioned.
great review, I just preordered, thanks so much!
