Eleven years, man. ELEVEN YEARS, I've been driving my Civic, and I was always cranky about not having a way to turn off the AC when running the "defrost" vent. Thanks a million!
I had no idea that my air conditioning was being turned on when I used my defroster. I noticed that it seemed like it was revving up the same way it does when the AC is on. But since the AC light didn’t come on I assumed it wasn’t. This is super useful
I did this on my Civic a while back. Don't remember where I learned it though. I write these these tips in my owners manual whenever I run across them. It's great that you show how to enable and return to original.
Tried it five times on my 2010 Civic, didn't work. Watch the video several times to see if I was missing anything. What it did do is turn the compressor off when I switch to modes other than defrost. Whereas before I'd have to click the AC switch to turn it off in the vent or floor positions, so it's sort of worked.
The reason the AC is on for Defrost is to lower the humidity so you can clear the fog off the windshield faster when starting cold. When you cold start , The combination for this is: Fan on high, AC on , Heat on high, windows cracked (For fresh air). You run that for several minutes to clear that dangerous fog on the windshield.
Yea I was so happy when I figured out this trick . Pretty sure every 8th gen civic owner will agree that the way they have it set up from factory is annoying as hell. I do still turn on the ac to defrost my windshield if the car is still cold . It works well.
Most autos have this feature to keep your compressor seals wet. If you change it to no a/c defrost, come Summer, surprise my a/c refrigerant is low and it blows warm air.🌋
If i dont want a/c on for defrost ill just switch to floor selector like when its cold out bc the air comes out of defroster vent aswell.idk if its supposed to but my jeep, honda, yukon & nissan all 3 do it. In any case thanks for sharing. I love how these lil hidden gems are programmed into the vehicles as if the manufacturer is playing a lil treasure hunt game with us to go figure these things out lol
appreciate this. my compressor is shot and I don't need the AC condenser fan blowing under the hood when I'm trying to warm up/defrost my car in the winter. Having the option of just air blowing, or air conditioned air blowing on the windshield should always be a driver's option. Thank you!
alas you want your AC on. Since it will absorb the moisture in the air hence preventin ice and fog from forming in the inside. Also the AC air that will come out is always hoter then the outsite air in scenarios you need it,
This is the reason ac still works in so many old 6th and 7th gen civics tho ac needs to run periodically to stay lubed up and prevent seals from cracking

Hi, maybe this makes sense for some drivers some places, or single occupant. Damp climate or with passengers, don't change anything. The Civic is a smart car. Do the maintenance and drive. Mark Richardson
Any device, AC compressor, alternator, power steering pump, that is connected to crancshaft decreases engine power or to be more precise decreases energy output. On some vehicles when You switch AC on while engine runs rpm may go up a liitle. Try accelerating with and without AC on You will feel the difference. Depending on how big the engine is this can be felt more or less. In a 1.8l civic or even in 2.4l Accord fuel consumption will increase about 0.5l per 100km depending how hot it is outside.
Michael Gonzalez *If you haven’t found/got one yet* you can usually find someone who sells them at swap meets or events like that:) They have a wide variety of colors/textures where I’m at
Puss In Boots Depends who does them. Mine fits perfectly along the trim and it saves my FHA’s from cracking or drying out due to Arizona’s 120+ degree heat :)
Ummmm. It was designed this way on purpose. You want the AC running to defrost. It pulls the humidity out. My AC went out in my car, and defrost was a nightmare until I was able to have a new compressor installed. But all means, bypass the design with this secret.
@@rveasna22 You want AC on with defrost is what I’m saying. Also, how much gas are you actually saving? Probably not worth the hassle,
no but the way these compressors burn out its not a bad idea to keep it off as much as possible@@Bertminator

The compressor /ac being on dries the air to defrost the windows quicker
Then leave it on if you want. But this also gives you the opportunity to save fuel. Choose is yours unlike before hack.
