You guys in Australia love to boost Amarok and Ranger... Yet it does not help the sales.. In South Africa same story and the Hilux is outselling everything els for many years.... With good reason..

Thats what I noticed everywhere on youtube many reviewers trying so hard to praise ranger but in reality nobody buys ranger.. it lacked the secondhand value, the face is oudated, and between Ford n Toyota as a brand, who wouldn't pick Toyota?

Ranger outsells the Hilux in New Zealand, recently but historically Hilux wins. I love the look, the drive and the aftermarket on the ranger. But the Hilux will simply outlast the ranger and getting a lemon 🍋 ranger is more common than the Hilux

I've had SR5's as work vehicles for 20 years. There relatively bullet proof, have broken things but never been left stranded. In ute form the rear is quite short and makes hauling bikes etc a pain, better with a tray back. They drive OK for what they are, still a bit agricultural and a 10 hour drive is about my limit and I want out. More capable off road than it looks, front wheel travel is limited and needs a rear locker to get serious. Tonnes of aftermarket accessories is handy. Good to see it has a bit more grunt, would still like a little more though. Pushing around in the desert forget the advertised 8.4 L/100km I use about 20 L/100km in sandy deserts and around 10 L/100km highway. As a company car it's fine, would I spend $65K of my own money on one? Hell no! There's better options in the 2yo near new market.

The car market reflects what people are willing to pay. These 'utes' sell, they are practical and fashionable. It's as simple as that. Whether they are worth the money value or not is irrelevant. Personally I can't see a Mercedes sedan with some clever electronics an a large digital dash worth 200 grand, and I certainly would not pay 130 grand for a Landcruiser Sahara and they sell lots of them, so each to their own.

I went with the SR5 this year after having the Ranger generation BT-50. Test drove the twins (Mazda/Isuzu) twice and bitterly disappointed. Wanted to like them but can’t see what the hype is about. Ride and drive was shit and the engine is laggy. The interior looks nice until you see it in person. Just looks like a suv knock-off. Feels cheap and nasty. Ranger is definitely the best but it’s russian roulette with quality. Hilux sells so well because it sits in some odd sweet spot. Not trying too hard anywhere but engine, reliability and drive all better than the others.

While they weren't unreliable, they weren't trouble free over 195 and 110k respectively. You’re right. But ultimately, Australians - be they private owners, small business owners or fleet managers - are signing on the dotted line for HiLuxes, and people are then driving them. Even though the Ranger is without doubt more popular among private and small business owners, especially in 4x4 dual cab configuration, the fact is it’s the HiLux that tops the overall sales chart, and that’s meaningful.

Why is it the best selling vehicle? Because they see the word Toyota and lose their brain.

A mediocre vehicle, relying on the toyota name only !

i have one, things wrong so far.. headlights dont turn off when you lock the vehicle if you have parked in the shade, stereo will not turn off, keeps turning back on, battery power supply is only long enough to fit European style low height battery, it will not reach a slightly taller battery, same goes with the battery clamp system, not a practical vehicle at all, what happens if you need a battery in the country and they dont stock the little euro batteries.
auto drive mode is awful, gearbox only works acceptably in sport mode, built so f%^&*n cheap, the worst cheapest interior in its class, fake plastic stitching, cheap plastics inside and out
your review is nothing more than a salesmans video working for toyota
