Do you mean the 1'? A dead tine has no sustain. I don't hear any limited sustain notes. I do hear some of the 1' notes being plucked a little harder than others, and thus giving a less harmonic sound, or as you say, a different sound effect. (And to anyone with dead tines, sometimes they can be fixed by wiggling the tines a little, to find a more solid contact. If the dead tines are the highest notes, this might be less fixable. Higher notes tend to have less resonance/sustain, so are more vulnerable to being more "dead" in the first place. On some kalimbas it is more pronounced.)
