These are my favorite videos to watch, i know its impossible to make them consistently and I also know i cant stand watching the live stream waiting for this sort of thing to happen, if i was even awake when these streams happen, but i just love watching the brand new WR, watching the splits, and hearing the commentary from someone who doesnt yet know he did it.
Bro, you're fucking crazy. When I think mario, I think Andrew g, darbian, cosmic, and now niftski. When I think current mario, only the latter two come to mind. You're amazing, dude. Dont ever forget that shit. Dont doubt yourself. Fucking god tier. Congratulations. Nice work. Much love. That was amazing. And, you know you can do better. The couple "mistakes ", and some slightly better rng...who knows. I know it's a long shot, but that's what you guys live for. Sick, bro.
"if i hit this this'll be the best all stages run ever" buddy, you're starting off with the world record for the rest of the game, by definition this *is* the best all stages pace ever
Sort of true. But sometimes I had runs which couldn't quite make the 8-4 record, and I went ahead and killed bowser with fire at the end of 8-4. That skips the bridge collapsing cutscene and is faster for all stages, but slower for your 8-4 time. It's kind of a weird tradeoff. Basically I was saying if I got 9-2 it would be by far the best run, instead of just slightly the best run
In most runs of SMB1 or SMB2-J you will see people hitting the top of the flagpole. It's only in the absolute most optimized categories where you may see them hitting the bottom. The flag has to come down all the way no matter where you hit the flagpole, so going lower doesn't save time on the flag coming down. If you grab the top of the pole, Mario will accelerate faster towards the castle, so grabbing the top does save time moving to the castle compared to the bottom (lower is actually slower, not faster!). The only exception is there is a very precise glitch you can do to skip the flag animation. If you clip into the block at the bottom, then you can prevent the flag from coming down, and in rare circumstances skip the walk to the castle entirely. It's very difficult and there's no way you could possibly do it on every flagpole in a warpless run like this. You may see it occasionally used in these runs, but only in the very short any% categories will you see it used on every flagpole, because those categories are very optimized and doing that trick is the only way to improve the run further. You can actually see both types of flagpole glitch in world 9 of this run (25:31 and 23:43). It's MUCH MUCH easier to do this trick on the underwater levels- simply by swimming near the base of the flag- whereas non-water levels you need several frame perfect inputs to do this type of glitch.
The lost levels is definitely a hard game with lots of trolls and narrow jumps. I can’t believe i beated it. Not only that but you got only one chance in world 9, if you getting game over in world 9, you will get send all the way back to the title screen with no contineu, even not when you holding A and then pressing start.
Yeah, this is a famicom disk system game and has to load the next segment of the disk. Same with the ending cutscene, world 9, the letter worlds, etc. You can actually see I roll the timer back several seconds to remove the loading times, because they are a different length from console to console so remove them to eliminate the inconsistency
Prior to 3-4 they were accurate, but if you look at 7:00 I was mentioning wanting to see my "sum of best" up through 8-4. I changed the comparison to the sum of best- or in other words what it would look like if I did every stage the best I've ever done it. I forgot to change it back until the end of 9-3 (and even then I'd messed up removing the right amount of loading time, so the splits weren't accurate until the end of A-1). So for most of the run the D-4 column is comparing against sum of best, that's why it looks like I'm so far behind. In actuality I was about 2 seconds ahead of the D-4 run at the end of 8-4.

I do not understand this video. At 10:15 of the video the timing goes back and at 10:22 the text of the chat changes like if it is from a different session. Is this a problem in the editing of the video? Or did he take a break after 4-4? Is this allowed? I thought that in these record should be done in a single session of continuous gameplay, right?
I can only make two guesses. 1) Somebody copy and pasted a big post as a prank in chat or 2) There was a stream contest being handled by a server bot and/or mod on behalf of Kosmic. Any contests will have rules and such that would necessitate a big post to shove all previous posts off-screen. Big posts can make it seem like there was video cut due to their nature of shoving all previous posts off-screen.
There was no break. There was no editing. This is exactly how it happened on Twitch, live. This run was performed and broadcasted live, you could have watched it happen in real time if you were there. The timing going back is specific to this category/game. The load times are inconsistent on that level transition, so they are always subtracted from the runs. The timer you see is from a program called LiveSplit, and it has that functionality programmed into it. The text changing was just a long message being posted into twitch chat, which covered up the whole chat display immediately.
The timer going backwards/load time being removed actually isn't native to livesplit; I had to write that part myself. But thanks for explaining! Yeah, I'm removing the loading time there. You'll also see the timer go backwards in world 9, but I was too hyped up from the 8-4 wr and did it wrong, which I mention. The timer gets accurate at the end of A-1
“I’ll try and get one more good run going” I think he got it
Did you help him with a good pattern?
Said the magic words for the run 😂
IT HAPPENS EVERY TIME 😭
16:35. Summoning Salt sighting. He knows.
Probably writing the script while watching the stream. Just common sense efficiency.
And then, Kosmic did THIS!!!
the Salt blessing is no joke
I can hear the music already.
Dude's so goo he doesn't even need Coke or pizza
That’s why Kosmic’s the GOAT!!! Two WR’s at once!
Big congratulations Kosmic! I wish I had seen it on stream.

Already saw that WR on Twitch VOD. AWESOME run on the last attempt of the night. So many clutch moments.
Do people do more attempts in a session after getting a world record?
@@MattIsTheCat depends.

It's a privilege to watch this video. What a run!
The GOAT is back! (I hope Romhack wednesdays are coming back soon too 😊)
Gg man. Super impressive
The weirdest part of this run was when Mario hit that fat gritty on 7-4 just to flex his WR pace, and still gets a 21:13

Yo GG man! That’s awesome!

Can't wait for the record to drop to 2109
In every SMB speedrun I have seen the players wanted to hit the flagpole at its lowest point. Is something different here?

Nice👌
Awesome! This is the second 8-4/D4 double record from Kosmic that I’m aware of. Anyone know if he has more?
I feel like smb2j is just kosmics game at this point 😂
10:17 Why did it take so long for the next level to load? Does that normally happen? Also, congrats. Nice run.
Yeah, this is a famicom disk system game and has to load the next segment of the disk. Double champ
I need an explanation on those D-4 splits. why are they so far ahead for most of the way to 8-4?
Prior to 3-4 they were accurate, but if you look at 7:00 I was mentioning wanting to see my "sum of best" up through 8-4. I changed the comparison to the sum of best- or in other words what it would look like if I did every stage the best I've ever done it. @@Kosmicd12 that makes sense!
🎉🐐🎉
Do you have a video explaining this run
In the first one they try to hit the botom of the pole to save time? Its not the same in this one?
Just typed this out for someone else, hope you don't mind the copy and paste

The one time I’m not in stream
"wow that was a cool time loss"
*gets 2 wrs*
Why does the timer rewind by 5 seconds at the end of 4-4?
Removing the loading times. They vary from console to console and we remove them from the final time. I wrote a program to do it mid run for me

13:19 - say what ?!
His demeanor changed entirely after the bar skip
Why is Mario so easily able to just phase through things in this version of the game?
