My great uncle Buck was one of those Glider Pilots. He said that he was one of the last to fly in with a load of artillery shells and blasting caps. They wouldn't let him have a copilot on this trip because they couldn't afford to loose two in one shot. He made it out alive and passed a few years ago.

My uncle was in an artillery unit in Bastogne throughout the whole battle. While the 101st got most of the glory, there were a lot of other men who had it just as rough. My uncle never talked about the battle or much about the war at all. He was, in my opinion, also a hero.

Tom McDonald my uncle was in the 327glider regiment of the 101st and he was in Bastogne. EVERY American soldier that was anywhere near Bastogne was truly a hero.

Same with my grandfathers. They were both in ww2 and they barely spoke about it. They had won medals they never collected because they had had enough horror. The Germans chased my grandfather in his dreams until he died. I don't know if the Japanese haunted my other grandfather but inwould assume you never forget. I miss them. They are in Arlington national and I don't visit enough.

Especially the armored units, I'm sure they were a godsend to the 101st (considering the had no armor/tanks).

What a meat grinder of a battle. Never forget the men who fought and died for freedom. Also: Never forget the Malmedy massacre! Never forget the Wareth 11 massacre! Never forget the civilian men, women, and children who were also killed by the Nazis! I’m always humbled and amazed at how well the US treated the German prisoners.

By this time in the European theatre, Germany had wasted irreplaceable equipment and manpower on the Eastern front and...purged or executed some of the better generals and strategic combat senior staff...If Bastogne was a hub for access to Antwerp...why not bypass it towards the objective? That tactic worked before but somehow they chose to engage... I often wondered why...
