- Yes, you read it right. At the 2021 Portugese Grand Prix, Mazepin was voted allegedly driver of the day through the voting system on Sky Sports. The Russian Driver could no way win this on merit and it was down to some tomfoolery and banter from F1 fans on Twitter. But why was it believable and how did F1 and Sky deal with it?

I actually legitimately voted him driver of the day because I would vote based on how much entertainment a driver would give and he was my driver of the year in that regard 🤣👍

I remember this happened with Robert Kubica in the 2019 Hungarian GP. A ton of Poles had come out to support their national hero and many fans were voting for him even though he didn't do anything that special. F1 didn't want a backmarker winning DotD and "recalculated" the results and gave the award to Max, which pissed of most of Poland.
Latifi and Sirotkin were voted as dotd once aswell…. F1 fans just love voting for the worse drivers
He almost became the GOAT but latifi was on the scene.

I’m pretty sure I voted Mazepin DOTD in Bahrain for a laugh and lots of other fans showed their vote over different social media platforms and u could say that that race was rigged by giving another driver DOTD (I forgot who it was now, I think it might have been Perez), but they’ll never be a way to prove it

You forget Rio Haryanto get driver of the day in 2016 Australian GP. But if I recall correctly, the vote result is recalculated before the race end and Grosjean got the DOTD. Pretty sure F1 didn't expect Indonesian internet user will flood the vote because at that time the support from Indonesia is pretty high since he the 1st Indonesian national F1 driver in history and people see him as a national hero.
I do believe the vote for Haryanto is pretty high until 2016 summer break but F1 probably block any vote from Indonesia after Australian GP.

they should've given the awards as voted by the public like how 'Boaty McBoatface' was given back in 2013. If the award is given stupidly, then it's the public's silly decision, not F1's. The drivers have a sense of humor so they would just laugh it off.
I always voted for Latifi, he was the GOAT and the other drivers should say thank you he never used more than 5% of his skills

Absolutely. I did show the press statements about that in the video but I think youtube get a bit weird about even mentioning Sexual harassment. As it's early days with the channel I chose not to say it directly

Nikita could actually have a somewhat legit chance at driver of the day in at least one race in 2021. Mazepin got the fastest lap at spa in 2021.
