My grand father ran the dealer service dept at a buick dealership and would only work on caddies or buicks.Early years most were doctors or lawyers.Doctors always had spot lights to see house numbers. His personal car was a 40 caddy 60 series. The car was always like new till his death in 1972.Always cleaning or servicing it. It was a beautiful automobile. My dad said hard steering.I can"t imagine how hard the v-16 model was to steer.
Jay, the back of the jumpseat folds in half to take up less room. It would have come up higher on your back if you unfolded it. The chrome pieces on top are the hinges
Good catch, Gman! Being a funeral car driver for a while in my youth, I agree. Jump seats are illegal today, they just collapse fwd if you suffer a collision.
Beautiful car! I especially love the chrome accent strips running across the width of the running boards front and back, the incredible wood window trim, and the Art Deco trim on the dome and rear interior lights. I think its interesting that '40 Caddies and Packards kept the headlights mounted to the sides of the hood rather than integrating them into the fenders as was the prevalent style by that time. Its like they figured their buyers were on the stodgy side so they styled their cars accordingly.
Hi I actually owned a72 it was a 7pass sedan no divider window . Very good driving for it's size. It was 6 volt reverse polarity system. The interior did have real wood.
That’s awesome was your seat up right or more relaxed because of the lack of partition. Thank you so much for sharing that it was a 6 volt reverse polarity system auto companies made some really weird 6 Volt systems like Ford use positive ground for the longest time
Awesome car and video!!! I have a 72 Series Fleetwood 7 passenger Sedan. Only 305 made. Mine is 100% original and runs beautifully. The paint is faded, headliners hanging down, seats in bad shape, etc. and I wouldn’t change it for anything I love it. I really enjoyed your video. Thank you for sharing, Tony
As far as sheer quality goes, the Packards are at the top of the heap. But those Lincoln Zephyrs were some of the most absolutely beautiful cars ever conceived... Especially that Business Coupe, with it's swooping deck lid! This Cadillac is absolutely beautiful, though. We'll never see craftsmanship or luxury like this again in a modern production car.

Hi Jay, it's stunning and gorgeous this Caddy, even more impressive than the 75! But if we look more to the depth, this model'sbody was built by Fisher, not by Fleetwood, hence the somewhat lower price tag. Watching even more closely, the 72 from 1940 and the 67 from the following two model years shared the bodyshell with the Buick 90 Limited. The 1940 Cadillacs look so similar to the 38 and 39 models. The following year marked the first year for Cadillac to have its gas tank behind the taillight, A long lived tradition which Really liked. My prefered car from both scenarios would be the Packard.

V16 Cadillacs are cool because they were over the top BUT wasn’t styled over the top I would love to find some to review I’m a huge Packard fan myself would love to own one someday I’ll share mine when I get one.
It's a good thing you recorded this before they sold it! Another beautiful old car. One thing I noticed about the headlights is how they aren't blending in with the front fenders like other 1940 GM cars. Not unlike the 1961-64 Cadillac limos which had 1959-style windshields/vent windows. Another example would be the 1949 Series 75, which carried over the pre-war styling when all other GM cars were all new. Still, I would prefer the 1940 Packard. Probably because I like the hood ornament and front end treatment. And I would go for the 1939 Lincoln Zephyr.
Great video Jay...the quality of this vehicle just jumps out of my screen!...You can really sense the subtle style transition taking place moving away from the 1930’s!!...Cadillac beats Lincoln and Packard hands down for 1939 and 1940!!!

Cadillac is notoriously difficult to easily follow the styles….they use series types, model names, terms like coupe, seville, coupe deville, Lasalle….etc.. oh, then they throw in their crystal clear 😂 use of “window” count. That being said, the interior of this particular car is Mind Blowing!
I was particularly taken aback by the "Imperial" designation, but it has probably been used by other cars besides Cadillac and Chrysler over the decades, not to mention the margarine.
The '40 Cadillac is one of those rare examples where the re-style is an actual improvement on the original. The '39/'40 comparison segment masterfully illustates this, well done! The interior on this one, like the Lincoln previous, has obviously been "sympathetically" restored, in leather, understanably, given the perishable nature of cloth vs the rest of the car, and the fact that the probable originally "mohair" cloth is neary unnobtainium (AFAIK there's just one mill that still makes it) , and thus priced by the square inch, so an understandable option. Still, wouldn't kick it outta the "Dream Garage"...
Thank you I love the comparison segment I think it highlights these cars and helps see the differences between two years =) it helps people decide on which car they’d like to buy if they are looking for one Glad you dig this channel =)
Really nice car. I am always amazed at how little horse power is made by the old engines and that they have to move 4700 lbs. Do the front side windows disappear into the doors totally so one can rest their arm on the door while driving down the road.
That 40 Cadillac! I'll take your entire stock! 😂😂 With the 39 steering wheel though. For WYR, 40 Lincoln has the shape but Cadillac has more pizazz, to me. The 39 Lincoln Zypher. Good joke at the end. I'm half Polish 😂 Thanks Jay.

I'm surprised that this doesn't have a Hydramatic. The 1940 LaSalle's I've seen also had Hydramatics. A friend had a 1940 LaSalle in his shop and I showed him to shut it off in "R" and it would lock the transmission. Much more common in 1941. I'd go with the Packards in either comparison. Smoother and more powerful engines, but the Caddy wasn't lacking power either.
@@What.its.like. From people I knew who lived it, they told me that HydraMatic came out on late-'38 Oldsmobiles . When 1939 was a successful year for the HydraMatic and proved itself, Cadillac started using it in 1940. GM, having the first mass-produced fully automatic transmission wanted to expand and be king of the automatics, they would build and sell them to anyone who wanted them. About the only thing that GM later kept exclusive to the Cadillac line was the dual-drive shift quadrants, after they came out. I remember seeing HydraMatic-equipped GM truck with shift quadrants: 4-1, 3-1 & 2-1. Other GM brands used the "S", for Super between "D" and "L". Even after HydraMatic was no more. Rolls-Royce/Bentley was probably the last to use the original 4-speed HydraMatic and I remember them using the numbered shift quadrants into it's last year of 1967. The R-R cars where electrically shifted with switches mounted of the steering columns and an electric motor actually changing quadrant positions at the transmission.
I would prefer the 1940's dash--it's easier to see the speedometer at a glance. I would also choose the 1940 Packard and the 1940 Cadillac V16. The Cadillac V8 has three main bearings, not four--I think it was a slip of the tongue.
.....thank-you for the vid....I am hooked to your content....I prefer the Packard Sedan, and the '39 Lincoln coupe......the "39 and '40 Cads, that were very prestigious and well-built cars, were, imo, not nearly as attractive looking compared to many other cars.....
WYR: 1) Packard 2) Cadillac V-16 - poor Zephyr, it wasn't in the same class as the other two AT ALL. Very pretty, but also very compromised (that 12 was weak in terms of torque and troublesome if driven, as most were, primarily in stop and go traffic)
Like the looks of the 1940 just a little bit better vs 39. 14:38 WHAT? No rear compartment radio? For shame, Cadillac! Either or #1 I'll take the Packard, even though the Caddy looks a tad more sporty. #2, Would take the Zephyr even with that troublesome V12 they had.

I’m just a regular guy, put my pants on one leg at a time like everyone else. =) I’m going to make an announcement in the next video I just have to ask my wife if i can go, first show is the day of anniversary.. i’m going to make an announcement and say if anybody lives close to the Western Pennsylvania region and would like to go to the Monday night car show at Lowville we can all driving together we’ll just meet up somewhere. It would be super cool and can make that a thing =) I love meeting people I comment on channel posts from other channels and never get a response.. I hate that feeling, I try to live my life by the golden rule, I treat people how I’d like to be treated. =)
I've read that the automatic transmission was introduced either in the Buick or Oldsmobile. The transmission was still kinda unproven and experimental. It could have had an unknown issue which would make itself known during mass production. Better to ruin Buick or Oldsmobile reputation than Cadillac reputation. Cadillac offered the automatic transmission soon afterwards.
Hi Jay. Great car but I think the driver is so limited is because he is the chauffeur. Also if you were black you weren’t allowed to buy a Cadillac so those that could afford it would have an agent whom they would pay $300 or $400 on top to purchase the car. That joke about the Polish I heard in reference to the Irish. I would take a Caddie every time but they don’t compare to the modern versions so comparisons don’t work. It was a different era with different values. Much as I like this channel just remember in Europe people were dying in concentration camps. All the best.
Yeah it was just a joke at the end I was really afraid to tell it because I don’t have anything against anybody I’m just a real down to earth kind of guy.. it could’ve been any nationality really.. Yeah it’s crazy when you put it in perspective like that the stuff that was going on when this car was being made.. I often wondered how do they talk about that over there in Europe especially in Germany how do they talk about World War II..
Hey Jay, this Cadillac is stunning!!!

.....thank-you for the vid....I am hooked to your content....I prefer the Packard Sedan, and the '39 Lincoln coupe......the "39 and '40 Cads, that were very prestigious and well-built cars, were, imo, not nearly as attractive looking compared to many other cars.....
Thank you it means a lot to do something people enjoy =) I’m with you this isn’t my favorite era of Cadillac
Zephyr is coming sometime soon.. they are super expensive for what they are basically and oversized and stretched 40 ford.. great choices =)
Packard always first choice 🤠👍✌️
Mine too I’m a huge Packard fan =)
The 39&40 Lincoln’s for me please or better yet compare all 3 makes from 39&40
=)
Well done Jay , What a treat !
Thank you I forgot I did this one lol going back to classic automall to shoot some more today =)
I’m sorry but I didn’t see Self Driving Auto Pilot. No deal lol
Haha That’s just more stuff to go wrong lol
Self Driving is the chauffeur haha
3:55 FWIW, I think the 1940 looks nicer in each slide.
Steak, paper, 1940 Cadillac Limo, 1940 Cadillac V16
Awesome choices =)
1940 Caddie first, then the Packard 12
Great choices =)
Man, if someone showed up in one of these you would have to ask who died? Looks like Draculas sports car.
Looks like Dracula Sportscar you win video comment =)
@@What.its.like. Well there was another Barris car, Dragula. Munsters.
Great choices =) yeah it’s weird how basic this dash was for the status symbol of this car
Something for you, Jay.
I know you like 'The Beach Boys' music.
You give us such good details on automobiles, here is a video of the making of a 'Beach Boys' song. Maybe you've seen both parts already. That's okay 👌.
Here is a link to part two ...

@@What.its.like.
No worries, Jay. I am amazed at how much you do.
And that's just making videos and responding to comments. Lol
I try to run this channel differently than everyone else. It would be super cool and can make that a thing =) I love meeting people
I comment on channel posts from other channels and never get a response.. I hate that feeling, I try to live my life by the golden rule, I treat people how I’d like to be treated. =)
Haha! , I'm Polish, so what's the problem with going at night???
Haha it was a joke I have some polish Heritage in my family is well
Good idea, going at night.
Hahaha =)
Packard's please in both cases
Awesome choices =)
The Cadillac didn’t offer automatic transmission? When did that start?
I've read that the automatic transmission was introduced either in the Buick or Oldsmobile.
The transmission was still kinda unproven and experimental.
It could have had an unknown issue which would make itself known during
mass production.
Better to ruin Buick or Oldsmobile reputation than Cadillac reputation.
Cadillac offered the automatic transmission soon afterwards.
1940 was the first year for it
@@What.its.like. thanks for the info.
Sherry by Franki Valli and the 4 Seasons
Great guess it is The Four Seasons but it’s not that song
Yep, it’s Candy Girl.
Arrghh. Cadillac never offered overdrive.
If you get the chance, film a Mercer Raceabout.
I want to that’s a holy grail car for me so is a stutz... classic automall has one perhaps they will let me shoot it?
@@What.its.like. I hope so. Those things can go 100 mph. 100 mph in 1913 is like going 300 mph now.
I got to shoot a stutz it’s coming next week previews I. Today’s episode
