The athearn starter kits are AMAZING. I think everyone should start with one. It leaves you with rollingstock, and if you go dcc, a dc engine and transformer you can later sell.
That is a nice sized loop for a starter set. How much does this set go for? You are absolutely correct about this scale not being for little children. O scale is better for that. I have O and HO scale. The O scale is for the tree at christmas and the HO is for my personal use.
Hi. As you were saying looks good under a Christmas tree. But if you have a huge layout you could get 2 more plain black NS locomotives to go with your first responders NS ,would look nice along with more freight cars and a few more pieces of track. I'm a Conrail , NS, and CSX and not to mention a train lover myself. Nice train set man.
Athearn never made its' own track. I believe older Athearn sets came with Atlas snap-track, but now they include nickel-silver Bachmann E-Z Track to make it easier for anyone starting out in model railroading and to have a high-quality HO-scale track.
Nice set. Excellent detail on the loco and rolling stock. I like that the wheels on the rolling stock are metal. I'm not real knowledgeable about model train sets as far as the differences between manufacturers but it is obvious that Athearn makes a quality product. I have a couple of Bachmann HO scale sets (Harry Potter Hogwarts Express, and Rail Chief) and a Mantua F7 A/B locomotive set and very happy with those but if I want to buy more locos or rolling stock I will consider Athearn.
Thanks for the review. I bought the Union Pacific version of this train set and I noticed that the train starts moving very slowy until you move the dial to 30 or 35, is it normal for this set?
@@NS-hw5wz I know this comment is 5 months old, but the locomotive is a roundhouse model (former ready to roll locomotive). Roundhouse locomotives is usually consists of older blue box era locomotives such as the gp38s, gp40s, gp50s, ac4400, and the dash 9. They usually have less details than what the newer rtr locos have
NOTE FOR NEW MODELERS: FLAT CAR ON THE CSX, KCS, AND UP SETS ARE REPLACED BY A CAR KNOWN AS A GONDOLA WITH CEMENT CONTAINERS THERE IS ANOTHER NAME; BNSF WHICH IS THE SAME SET BUT BNSF ROAD NAME.
Hi James. The lighting was very poor compared to what we normally see. Also i would love to see some Piko train set reviews. That would be something very different and nice.
Cool train set! I only have one gripe against ez track and thats the fact that the rail joiners are difficult to replace because they're so tight on the track that they're hard to remove.
This is great, but I see them cutting corner after corner. That NS ex NW ACF early boxcar can't possibly exist in real life, at least not in present use. Plus I don't recall MCVX safety train riding on NS.
I will say, I'm tired of both Athearn and MTH for including vintage-era freight cars in their modern-era HO scale starter sets. I say keep it consistent to the time period.
It's a starter set! what do you expect? this is the kind of thing that gets people into the hobby in the first place. So don't be such a whiny rivet counter! nobody likes them!
TheBrantfordRailfan first off I'm not a whining rivet counter I hate them as well but seriously for that price at least get the rolling stock paint job to look somewhat close, not trying to start a war here I'm sure many people would agree with me starter set or not

The newer Athearn sets often come with a DCC-ready locomotive, most of the time, so you can just plug in the appropriate decoder.
Athern has some of the highest quality looking locos for being in a starting set I have ever seen (in my opinion)

I just won this starter set at my local model train club's open house
Train

i like the cars in this set, and the GP-38 looks great. i might have to see if i can find this set.
What about price in INR ?
So Athearn HO trainsets have Bachmann EZ track included in them now? I thought Bachmann and Athearn were competitors.
Athearn never made its' own track. I believe older Athearn sets came with Atlas snap-track, but now they include nickel-silver Bachmann E-Z Track to make it easier for anyone starting out in model railroading and to have a high-quality HO-scale track.
Brings me back 40+ years ago, a basic train set , were it all began !!! Thanks James

Is the locomotive a Genesis model? Roundhouse?
Its definitely not genesis so it might be roundhouse

Me gustan mucho los trenes de colección tanto es asi que me gustaría mucho tener un tren de juguete para jugar Jorge
I was actually eyeballing this online the other day, cool!
I don't know what i'd use the tanker for though. I don't know if it hauls water or what
Do you think Norfolk Southern Employees get a discount on purchasing this set?
Awesome review! Looks like a great set!
not to bad,,,,,i might get one
Would this sets come with black E-z track or is it gonna be always white
“You’ve got the flatcar, probably the most interesting car in they set” not something you hear often
NOTE FOR NEW MODELERS:

This set is so awsome I'll have to find this one!!!!
Cool
Interesting train set
Haven't watched your channel in a while, but great job on 33k subs.
Also I've been watching since 2012? 2013?
They use ez track!
Great looking set, perfect for a Christmas gift.
, great video like always
I'm looking for the first responders engine
Thanks for your review. You do it all. That’s great.
Great review! I wish Athearn would have done the actual safety train tank car in the set. Or at least paint the one included to the proper scheme.
First responder train by Norflox Southern. The irony of this train set.
Nice review as always James. Merry Christmas
This is a nice train set for Christmas
Scale please..
To you and your family Merry Xmas James
Do the Kato train set
This is the train I want
The tanker is the CSX tanker car but marked for NS
The trucks on the locomotive look too small looks weird
W.O.W.
Love it
Darn. I started out with the IronHorse kit.

This was out in my recreational area of the basement.

I'm here before 100 views
Looks like it will unhook
GIFT FOR ME PLEASE MY FROM THAILAND XD
boxcar had broken ladder and rolling stock is not from the train its marketed as being. a little bit of false advertising. shame on athearn.
The real sad thing here is that the whole set is, probably, made in China. It would be worth having if it was made in the USA.
Athearn has a plant based in China, and they still make very high-quality trains.
The Engine is the only thing correct every piece of rollingstock is not correct for that train ,not impressed
