I a amazed that Ford had 10-wheeler AAs--that poor 4-cylinder engine must have been working its heart out with that load of coal--Having driven a loaded AA dump I know that it would have taken about a block to stop that coal truck with those mechanical brakes!
The mechanical brakes in the Model A and AA truck are as if not more powerful than any hydraulic brake you could fit on them. That coal truck can stop in it's own length as it wouldn't drive faster than 30-35 mph. Those trucks had very slow gearing so they could haul anything. The big factor for stopping quickly is not the brakes but the tires. My daily 31 A pickup will stop from 45mph in 45 feet.
Absolutely amazing!!! How could they manage such loads with just 40 horses...

Thanks Nathan, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Is that an ambulance variation at 2:54 or a mail truck? And what is the proper name for a covered bed like that anyway?
Thank you for sharing this!

They just dumped the coal into the street? Was Mrs. housewife supposed to shovel it all into her basement?
