The History of the Battleship Yamato: A Symbol of Power and Tragedy
The battleship Yamato was a colossal warship built by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) in the lead-up to World War II. It was the largest and most heavily armed battleship ever constructed, displacing over 72,000 tons and boasting nine massive 46 cm (18.1 inch) guns.
Conception and Construction:
Designed in the 1930s: The Yamato was conceived as a response to the growing American battleship fleet. Japan knew it couldn't compete in numbers, so they aimed for overwhelming firepower in individual ships.
Secret Construction: The Yamato's construction began in 1937 in great secrecy, with the project shrouded in national pride and military ambition.
Commissioning in 1941: The ship was formally commissioned in December 1941, just after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Early War Service:
Flagship of the Combined Fleet: Throughout 1942, the Yamato served as the flagship of the Combined Fleet, with Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto commanding the fleet from its bridge during the Battle of Midway.
Limited Action: Despite its immense firepower, the Yamato saw little action in the early years of the war, primarily serving as a deterrent and symbol of Japanese naval might.
Later War and the Final Mission:
Shifting Tides: As the war turned against Japan, the Yamato's role became more desperate. Fuel shortages and the growing threat of American air power limited its effectiveness.
Operation Ten-Go: In April 1945, the Yamato was sent on a one-way suicide mission to attack the American forces invading Okinawa.
Sinking at Okinawa: With minimal air support and facing overwhelming American carrier-based aircraft, the Yamato was sunk on April 7, 1945, marking a symbolic defeat for the Japanese Navy.
Legacy:
End of an Era: The sinking of the Yamato effectively ended the era of the battleship as the dominant naval weapon, highlighting the rise of aircraft carriers and air power.
Symbol of National Pride: The Yamato remains a powerful symbol of Japanese national pride and technological prowess, despite its tragic end.
A Reminder of War's Cost: The story of the Yamato serves as a stark reminder of the immense human and material cost of war.

I'd have to make sure my kids, or grandkids, would finish it once I was gone.
I think tackling all that photo etch would be enough to send some modelers straight to the looney bin. i did enjoy seeing it though as it is completely over the top. The instructions were next level. I hope other manufacturers such as the one that builds your AHHQ 1/16 kits would take note and up their game.
Ive got revell platinum edition tirpitz, the etch is mental! Gun barrels are all tiny, but theres no 3d stuff the kit barrels have to be cut off, holes drilled and the brass ones fitted, instructions are complicated this looks way better!
I have to agree. The deluxe kit is a stunning kit but I am not great with PE and I think I would lose the will to live half way through. It would take me months to build it
i think it be fun, especially if you have good refrence books to use.
Seems like the Ultimate ship model
That instruction booklet looks amazing
Great review
I think there is now a kit that will take as long to build as the original full size ship… looks awesome though, and much respect to those who build it.
Very well done, this is the scale I have settled on to do all my ships, this one is on my list.
Thank you for the review & unboxing. I did not know Yamato had 2 types of Seaplanes.
Not something I'd build however, that is a beautiful kit for the serious ship builders
I can see this taking at least a gallon of paint(s) and a quart of CA and other adhesives to complete. Not complaining though. The engineering alone that went into producing this kit is mind boggling. And as a former US Navy Machinist Mate, I applaud the hull detail depicting all the seawater inlets and outlets on the bottom of the hull. No idea how accurate they are, but glad to see them included!
Insane Kit. Looking forward to a video where a crazy guy, or girl, really faced this challenge.
I used a Very Fire PE kit to upgrade the Tamiya Tirpiz. The PE kit had a few issues, but all said and done it turned a 1970's ship shaped blob of plastic into a great looking model. To be fair To Tamiya, most model ships of the era were very blobish in the detail. But Tamiya were on top of the game. I have used Eduard PE and their instructions and quality are A1. I bought a Gold Medal kit for the Revell Queen Mary 2 again the instructions and PE top class. I have about ten frets from the Very Fire PE with various amounts of parts that are no part of Tirpitz left over. Study the parts carefully before building and decide if it is better to use the kits small deck gun fittings over the PE. Some of the gun mounts are over complicated and extremily fragile. The 3D parts were not really on stream five years back, but the replacement lifeboats and Arados were great. As was the wooden deck, it fit well. A coat of clear varnish helps it stay stuck to the plastic and a weathering wash before you position it. Much easier off the ship. The instructions , well pretty vauge. 12 sheets of photos and part numbers that didnt relate to the frets. Annoying.
Pre-order done! And that’s a fair price
The detail is incredible
Beautiful project, something to save up for!
I think you should build this one.
Take my money Andy👍😁! Wish it was available on June 26 when I’m on my way from Vegas to Texas 👍😁
Awesomeness! I'll have to think hard about getting this kit before it goes back to regular price.
Amazing Detail!
Toujours formidable !!!!!!!!!
Excellent preview. Thanks.
Photo-etch canopy frame for the scout planes? Christ. . . 😵💫
Back in the day White Ensign used to make 1/350 cockpits, now they were fun!.
We love you, Andy! Can't wait to see more diorama's!
Amazing kit, but definitely out of my skill range. I definitely would need help building this. The painting and weathering alone is a 6-month to a year project!
I like that the model is designed for a wooden deck. It's usually the other way around.
I’ve got Very-Fire 1/350 USS New Jersey and it’s a great model but I’m trying to get photo etch for her..Either way the Big-J should build up to a beauty..All the best to Andy and all🇬🇧🇺🇸👍
Absolutely a beautiful kit but I will have to be satisfied with my Tamiya kit.Banzai Yamato!👏👏👍👍
Really nice kit, but I'd never finish it. Ever.
I think I will stick with my Premium Tamiya kit. I have the wood deck and Eduard's PE sets for it. Plus the separate de-gausing cable set from Tamiya.
Andy, what is the reasoning for the 3d printed turrets? Is there a detail advantage to those over the turrets from the sprue? More detailed (I’d think not but maybe!)
High quality commercial 3d printing can create details that injection molding can not do. The drawback is the fragile nature of resin 3d printing. But it looks with the cage around the part like in this kit that problem has been solved.
I've used 3D printed parts for 1/350 Turrets for Hood and Repulse , from Micro Master of New Zealand. The level of enhanced detail , plus the actual 3D turret is correct , with no accuracy issues. The 3D turrets made a difference, downside not cheap..but better than the injection plastic
Amazing Andy ....WOW!!
Great video preview
I've build a few ships in bottles over the years, but never build a model of this size, looks really interesting, and daunting. I would still like to give it go though.
Wow! What a kit!
I’ve yet to start my 1/350 USS Atlanta.
is this a rebox of Tamiya premium edition? I built it, superb kit, main guns have complete barbettes
What a beauty!!!!!!!!
Of subject, do you still have those life size tank shells?
Thank you for your review. I have pre-ordered it in Japan and can't wait for it to arrive.
...ノーマルとDX版でマスト形状違うんだ...
A Lot of details Nice kit ☝️💪☝️
Nice!! When you starting it, @andy?
How does this compare to the Tamiya 1/350 Yamato Premium kit? Looks like a positive that the railings come as PE where on the Tamiya one they have their railing kit that is really fiddly!
This is a great model kit, comparable to the Tamiya 1/350 scale Yamato ! But I am looking for a 1/350 scale HMS Renown ! And I am wondering if there is one manufacturer could produce this kit !
Hey Andy! I got a coupon at Heritage Con for your Canadian site saying it would be up in May, will the coupon expire or will it still be good for when the site is up?
IJN used some incredible craft. Imagine if they had not been bent on our destruction ...
i think andy should have the Yamato be he is next 1/16 kit 🤣
Which one is better, the Tamiya 78025 or this Very Fire DX ?
Tamiya one has complete main gun barbettes and several pe sheets.
and ordered
Stunning Kit , looks like a lot of failures on the 3 d printed parts, the details are not fully printed .
Tamiya do a Permium edition yamato which I have built, looks very similar, is this a rebox by veryfire?
No . Totally new tool.
question, how much is this kit?
How long would it take to build by a normal modeler? 6 months? A year?
A year. If doing it full time 2 to 3 months
Trumpeter 1/350 Montana ?
Andy are you going to build this kit? 😮
What kind of question is that? This a 2 year plus project.
Awesome finaly a ship. but cant find it on you eu side.
How does the Very Fire Deluxe Edition compare to the Tamiya Updated version!?! Which one of these is more accurate? Sorry I should just do my own research on this but I had to ask 😎
the plastic kit is not as good but from a first look the update parts may make this a better kit, depends on cost point but you will need to add degausing cable in addition to whats in the kit
Thx Jason, i didn't want to ask Nigel right now, especially about the hull/bow @@ModelkitStuff
Just buy Montana& Wisconsin by very Fire, super
That much photo-etch is a bit overwhelming for me. Even the amount they had for the 1/350 Ranger was too much for me.
1/16 th M1Abrams tank with interior and engine. Former 4/64 Armor
I just broke a piece just looking at it. Way beyond my skill level but I want one Haha
Wow… I let you all know when I find my jaw…. I was concentrating only on *”WW2 Germany/Soviet Union”* kits, I’ve been considering switching to *”US/Imperial Japan”* and the Yamato could be a good place to start….
price is also deluxe? 😀
Andy how long is the presale for?
Until they arrive or we run out of our order amount
Hi Andy, appears to be a lot of damaged parts in your plastic kit and a bent mast. The basic plastic kit does not looks as detailed as the most recent Tamiya kit and personally I would not buy into the basic kit. However all the damaged parts appear to be replaced by etch in the deluxe edition. Verifier etch is very nice a s a rule but also amongst the most delicate to build. there are some omissions like the moulded on degausing cable that looks wrong and many modellers would want to replace with etching. nice to see the 3D printed sand bags were the correct shape as tamiya got that wrong. on the whole looks a great kit, a challenger for the Tamiya ultimate kit? I am not convinced would possibly depend on the price?
I believe typically this would be an early or preproduction version, so may have been shipped without better packaging etc.
@@crazylocha2515 think or know? Still a poor way of showing of your product, no excuses
This costs half the price of Tamiya plus all the aftermarket you would need that this kit already comes with. IMO, inaccuracies aside, this is a better deal.
@@ModelkitStuff not disagreeing with you, especially if it was at full retail ($470/£370ish) I would be inspecting closely before swiping the card. Will give Andy credit for his customer service and dealing with issues, so I do have faith in his company. Trust, but verify, and the packaging will be looked at before accepting. (Helps that I can get it held at the terminal for the major shipping company I drive big trucks for and refuse on initial sight) At the preorder price ($300/£235) I'd be willing to risk it, with those caveats. For a 200 scale, a tad pickier.
Wow, you are alot of fun..
Lighten up man..
magnum opus build
Not for anyone that isn't a complete psychopath...
why need more a new 350 yamato?Tamiya has its update new version yamato aIso with pe & metal partS。
New research data?Cheaper Price?easy to build Compare with Tamiya?New mold?Version before Sinking?I don't knoW。Can anyone telI me? Andy?
Bradly Mill
Holy sh
I could buy myself something in 1:350...now I'm stuck with 1:200 Bismarck :V
WoW
If you've built the deluxe version it'd be a shame to paint it with all the PE and 3D printed parts.
Does it come with a Wave Motion Gun? 😂
Huel Path
Great review, unfortunately way above my skill level.
Holy fricken moley....
This isn't a kit, it's a migraine in a box! 🤣
Does it come with surrendering crew or life jackets😂?
Needs banana for scale :D
I'll stick with the Tamiya premium Yamato edition and the Pontos detail up set. The kit in the review looks a little old as far as molding, flash and large molding gates. The P/E looks pretty thin which does not help either. Just my thoughts on the review.
Yeah 300.00 bucks and wife will divorce you.
Kind of normal price for big LEGO set and those are selling like crazy. I guess many wives don't care :)
Why is everyone ga-ga about a failed boondoggle Japan had sent out to sink?
Maybe because it was the biggest ever and is absolutely stunning aesthetically.
For the same reason people are ga-ga about German armor. I don't get it either.
She was a monster sized ship. Her twin sister Musashi also. She came extremely close to wrecking the American retaking of the Philippines at the "Battle of Samar". Highly recommend Drachinifel's or "Unauthorized history of the Pacific war podcast" with guest Jonathan Parshall's TH-cam videos on the battle for better context. 2 of the best presentations on it in my humble opinion.
She is the only battleship to engage an Aircraft Carrier with guns. Worthy enough I think.
I help out at a center with the kids in the town. I am not for sure if you discount these kids that you open up and show. But if you do discount them, I would buy all the kids from you at a discount. The kids would really appreciate learning how to build models. The kids are poor and most of them do not have a phone to play on which i am glad of that. But even the kids that do have phones. I am trying to learn them that there is a lot more in life than playing on their phone. Like I said, if you ever take a kit apart for your videos to show them. I will buy them from you if they are discounted afterwards.
