Why Is Eritrea Demonized By the West?

  • Eritrea is the most demonized and sanctioned African country. Why? It's not human rights abuses because there are far worse governments the U.S. supports. Eritrea also has better social indicators of health care and education than its pro-U.S. counterparts. Washington’s real problem with Eritrea is that it’s an independent country that refuses to be a client state that serves Western interests.
To help break it down, Rania Khalek was joined by Eugene Puryear, a journalist for Breakthrough News and host of The Punch Out podcast.

At Breakthrough News we believe in the power of independent media. Five mega-corporations dominate the media landscape - controlling 90% of what we read, watch and listen to. They control the news cycle, to which social media and even most “alternative” media is forced to respond. We are breaking through that cycle.
We tell the untold stories of resistance from poor and working-class communities - because out of these stories we will construct a different narrative of the world, as it is and in real time.
People’s movements in every corner of the globe are changing history and shifting consciousness. But these movements barely receive any coverage from the corporate media. They need visibility. They need amplification. They need a media arm to break through.
We can be that media arm, but only with your help. Become a Patron and join us on the front lines in the battle of ideas.

Eritrea is the only independent country in Africa and is an example for the rest. This is why the West tries so hard to crush. First of all you need some English classes. Secondly, the Chinese communist party is much more exploitive of African nations than any other nation in the west. And your current dictator also opened up for exploitation. Where do you think the revenues of mining in Eritrea goes? 40% to the government, and 60% in the hands of the mining industries. You can search for this info, I am sure you will find it.
And how immature of you to think that global shift of power will lead to your country's revival. Eritrea is just another african nation controlled by one person, with no possible way of attaining freedom, liberty, or any economic change except for the worse. The Chinese doesn't have a democratic civilization, so how do you suppose Eritrea will be a free nation after they lead the world. Eritrea is sanctioned by the west due to its authoritarian government Issias. There is no other reason. He is a communist dictator. The ELF and EPLF were all communists. 🤷‍♂️They were all just a bunch of communist idiots that only knew how to fight, and not how to lead an entire nation into a capitalist, developed, democratic state.
If you ask me, Eritrea is just heading to the worse.

If a government is willing to talk openly about what it fails at and needs work on. That is a government that should be respected and supported. Of course if the it goes on for decades with the same repeated claims and no real improvement or remains static consistently. Then not so much respect or support. But from what I have gathered from this report on BT. It seems like a government that admits it short comings and is working to find solutions. Unlike my country the US who just cry's wolf and things just get worse. Much like all the countries who do worse, because they are ruled by Washington. Did you know I can knock the door of the president house he lives with his people. I was shocked when I saw that I was wow and the people trust him. When I saw the some of theminister's using public transport after 5 pm coz they can't use government cars for their personal purposes I knew why our country is bad example for good of course in USA and it's allies eyes. What shocked me the most is seeing the president doughter walking on foot with some friends I think I was l couldn't believe it. Eritrea stands for social justice. And I am really proud of the officials Thier they work for the People. If u visit any village there is clean drinking water clinics police etc u can drink and be wasted at bars and u go back to your house at night on foot no problems safe and smooth no one robbed you or even to harm you I never felt that feeling in my life living in West. And u see American ambassador posting pics moving freely in Eritrea in markets and rural areas of Eritrea which he can't do it in any part of Africa only if there is dozens of tanks and soldiers around him, twittes agnist Eritrea. I am sure USA is the root of all evil. And God give them blind eye. Viva Eritrea 🇪🇷💙🇪🇷💙🇪🇷💙

That was the one things that blew my mind when I visited Asmara. There is no military or police presence near the president’s residence. My Mayberry town with less than 2,000 people has more armed security than the city of Asmara. The people are wonderful and the food is amazing. The pizza is much better than what I had in Naples, Italy. Unfortunately, this report failed to mention that the quality of life in Eritrea is not good. The government has done many good things but they have failed to build the economy. As an Ethiopian-American, I grew up hearing how beautiful and glorious Asmara is. I was really sad to see that Asmara looks the same as it did in the 60s and 70s. To me, it felt like the nation is stuck in time. Simple things like the lack of a decent and readily available internet connection was disappointing. Kudos for isayas for not allowing the west to bully him but let’s also not deny that there are significant issues that need to be addressed.
I found myself in a situation where I was stranded in the middle of the desert. Any other people would have passed me and I could have died alone in a foreign country but complete strangers rescued me. They saved my life and wouldn’t even allow me to pay them or buy them dinner. 90% of the world’s population would have either robbed me or left me behind. Although I hold an American passport, I am Ethiopian by birth. Both the US and Ethiopia haven’t been kind to Eritrea but they didn’t hold that against me (except for that one guy at the park that called us lemagns) , I will forever be grateful for Eritreans. I hope they can jumpstart their economy soon. The people deserve so much better.

Ya I know life quality is not as much as we wanted be if u see what USA did to harm Eritrea and the achievements we have is good. Imagine I heard US government they won't let Eritrea to buy a water generator for agricultural purposes. Can you imagine that water generator. A country which spend trillions for finding water in mercury won't allow as to modernize our agriculture do you see how hard it went with Eritrean. Ethiopia doesn't have any thing to harm Eritrea military or even economic but it had been a tool for westerners they invade Eritrea by help of USA they occupy our land which ruled for Eritrea for 20 years and USA keep sanctions on Eritrean military not to defend our selves. They invade Somalia by Obama's green light I remember when he arrived to Addis Ababa saying Ethiopians are great fighters they can finish the job in Somalia imagine he want Ethiopians to die for his agenda in Somalia. I hope the new government of Ethiopia change its policy of been westerners popet to a country which it own agenda. Any way I can assure u Eritrea is on the right track. We are free politically economically. We want basic needs first and we can make skyscraper building for eye of a visitor in coming future.

They go into depth about it on there full show. the fact that the U. S and it's allies don't like independent countries. When you have independent countries that arnt slaves too western powers they start to grow and it shows other countries you don't need too be in debt or be a slave too the West ect. Think about it. Saudi Arabia and other barbarian countries that have commited crimes against humanity they're allies with and it doesn't matter how many brutal things they commit but as long as they listen to the West or offer something of extreme value. They don't care if they commited war crimes

It's demonized so it doesn't be an example of good for the rest of Africa. So to discourage other countries from following on its foot step and be not a good base for the western imperialists Eritrea has to be demonized.

    • @solomontesfamichael5321

I think they gave the answer why Eri is demonized. They want to confuse the int'nal community for the illegal sanctions.they imposed over Eritrea. Sanctions are passed to weaken the economic activity in a country so thet people of the country will rise against their gvn't. Beyond that when the economy is weakened unemployment will be high US iperialists can buy internal terrorists easily. Mind "idle mind is devil's workshop". Economic frustrations can make the young wild. USA committed repeated terror bombing by purchasing local Eritrean young. But the Eritrean gvn't is wise enough to accomodate majority of the young in a national service scheme which the US hypocrats hate too hard. They continuously accuse for this as if the gvn't is exploiting man power. As an Eritrean I feel proud to have completed my national service plan and almost all who passed & are in this plan share the same pride. The gvn't used to cover all our living costs out of his poor pocket. We don't need the crocodile tears of the imperialists..God bless Eritrea & the World.

The developed nations did so much to cripple Eritrea and the Eritrean government through their sanction regulations.
Note: Only a wise knowledgeable person could understand the side effects of those sanctions.
    What are Eritrea Sanctions ?
Sanctions are freezing asset, unable to obtain / purchase military weapons, governmental boards unable to travel abroad freely.
The side effects of sanctions in Eritrea aren’t easy :
    * Unable to enjoy the justice and democracy in its own as needed,
    * Unable to resolve political and border threats against enemies,
*Unable to secure economic growth from tourism,
*Unable to import or export products,
*Unable to import medical 🏥 apparatus and medicines for the well-being of the free state population.
    * And many more even the refugee flux that we see today are the side effects of sanctions and Far west propaganda and their servants against Eritrea!

It is African nations to state their unwavering support to Eritrea in face of criticism from international community. There stands a major point to combined effort that will result from supporting the new nation which withstood sanctions and wars that resulted in great damage to infrastructure and its people that have received wars, genocide, wars of attrition. To turn the next page we must first acknowledge the one in hand. There is however a semblance of support to Eritrea from some countries in Africa that is showing after 3 decades of hard work and securing the nation from many threats and attacks on its sovereignty. The struggle was hard on our people but today Ethiopia joins hands after conflict with the past rulers appointed by west despite the unnecessary loss of human life and material value, and Somalia is stabilizing. Slowly but surely we will get there. The countries that have joined hands to work together are increasing and still remains much more to do but unwavering support is essential to uplift many more from underdevelopment, corruption, poverty and other challenges in Africa.

No Eritrea has the longest conscription in the world. Now that's bad enough but they don't just use conscripts for millatary stuff they use them to manage the state run enterprises. And in a socialist country what they get paid for managing the is about $40 a month. And the president says that decent wages doesn't make you work hard what really makes you work hard is patriotism. Now working for state owned enterprises for $40 a month might be patriotic but what isn't is that Eritrea is the top country that people leave. Wonder why?

But no, instead, we want to listen to the Eritrean government and people who are born in the West or outside of that country that don't even want to live in Eritrea. I think the difference between you @edwardkirby5225 and them is the fact that you have a brain that's capable of critical thinking, which I've come to realise is what many people don't actually have.

On a human level the international pressure fronted by US imperialism has taken its toll primarily on the youth. This includes endless conscription into the army. But that is why immigration to Europe had been so high. What I want you to take from this is to look at the route causes of this real human suffering. It's been designed and manufactured by US and its allies (using neighbouring servant regimes for so called border conflicts) but also economic sanctions inorder to put pressure on the independent path of development that the Eritrean nation had taken. Offcourse to counter these onslaught the Eritrean government had taken draconian measures which can be justified if your existence is under threat by powerful forces. This issue is likely to decipate and Europeans will come and work and live in Eritrea as our guests as you had been for us in these challenging times. What people should understand is Eritreans are independent minded so they rather starve than live in servitude of others ..I think the US would have figured this out by now!

I am glad you asked and didn't assume. I am Eritrean and i will tell you why people go out despite risking kidnapping and death. The military thing is a lifetime conscription. It never ends. Maybe 30 to 40 years, unless you are really sick ( btw even if you get shot in a war but you are still healed enough to hold a weapon, they don't let you go). You will only be able to see your family only few times a year. LMost of those soldiers cannot support their family since they receive barely any pay. We had great hope that this would end soon with the peace, but it only got worse. I was kidnapped on my way out of Eritrea, but if i had to do it again, i would still do it despite everything that happened on my way out. Its hard for non Eritreans to understand.

So are all the "human rights violations" cited in Eritrea blown out of proportion by western authorities? Or have things improved? Were they never true in the first place? I'm genuinely curious, my friend married a girl whose father is Eritrean and I had the privilege of talking to him for a while, wonderful man and I've just been incredibly curious about this country for a while now. It certainly looks way happier and more put together than I imagined it would look based on the first things I saw about it from some Western media outlets, whom I have zero trust for anymore these days. Very enlightening information, thank you. One thing I can say for certain is that the image they had built up in my mind was far from the truth I'm seeing.
