  • Altgang! what’s good, in this video we react to NF Hate Myself. Not gonna lie, this one was quite heavy but the beat did balance it out. I don’t think there’s been a track that stings (not personally) as much as this when he talks about self-confidence, doubt and insecurity.

    One of my favorite lines is "Pray to God with my arms open" because it's such a powerful visualization lyric in contrast to people in churches who pray with their hands together. With the "arms open" you think of that guy in the middle of the street on his knees at night time with the rain pouring down and him looking at the sky with arms fully-outstretched screaming for help from God after everything in his life has just crumbled around him.

    “I don’t want to die, I just want to get relief.” That’s the line in the song that hits me. I’m not depressed but I was recently diagnosed with cancer and I’m going through a lot of things that just want to be relieved of. And when I’m talking about relief I’m more focused on mentally draining part about having cancer rather than just the cancer itself. The bills, the chemotherapy, wanting to be treated as normal, nobody being able to understand what you’re going through, the pity from others, having to be much more conscious of your health and mortality. “I don’t want to die, I just want to get relief.”

    I actually like that the beat is faster with the message. It feels like how anxiety just kinda floods your mind quickly and overwhelmingly to bury you. Then you get that slow down of the depression in the chorus of being finally knocked down by that constant barrage.
    I actually really love this song because it shows how mental health doesn't care about your social or economic standing. The poorest person could have the richest health. I think that is one of the many reasons why his fans are so dedicated because he is able to put into words what some of us feel every day but have a hard time describing to neurotylical people. "No, you don't understand. This has nothing to do with my life right now. My life is great. My brain just sucks."

    This is one of my absolute favorite songs because sometimes, I'm not okay and wanna fight myself.
    However, on the outside, I'm still highly functioning and able to communicate brightly with others, so the mix of the lyrical matter and the instrumental/beat makes so sense to me personally in that way.
    This song just really resonates with me, right down to being teased by peace, because I know it exists, I've felt it before, and I know it's obtainable, but when I'm not okay, I just can't reach it.

    It's hard to gauge how I would have felt about this song when I was sitting in the abyss. And while I'm not out of it entirely, (Depression isn't something people just get over. For most, it lasts a lifetime and ebbs and flows.) I do feel like this song is easy to listen to because I know what's on the other side of self-loathing. Is it sad to not be able to help him find his worth? Yes. But I know there is hope for him because there was for me. It's difficult to not be able to steer someone into happiness. But NF is always "searching" - and that means he hasn't given up hope even though he says he has. People who have given up don't put in work. They sit on their asses and do nothing.

  • @cakecatlady263
    @cakecatlady263 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    About hope: I never really questioned why the search was for hope - to me it made perfect sense. But that's probably because of my own experience. This is how I see it; I realized that hope was the most important thing i my life when I lost it - you can live without love or happiness as long as you hope for better in the future. You can live without anything as long as you believe things will get better. When you lose that (which is pretty normal to do when you spiral into a depression), that's when shit hits the fan. That's when you start to wonder if life is even worth the effort. That's when the self-loathing and self-hatred defeats you, because you can no longer invision yourself without it. Looking for hope is the most brave thing a person can do then. Even if you fundamentelly cannot see the end of suffering, you keep hoping, even if it seems futile and stupid. One of my favorite qoutes about this is "There is hope, and if I feel like there isn't hope, my brain is lying to me." -John Green. It's so simple, but it can keep people alive. Thanks for listening to my Ted-talk lol. Hope you have a good day!

  • @traviswallace
    @traviswallace 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    It’s fair to say that NF is in a better place now with self acceptance (I say this because of a line he raps in Clouds, towards the end he says “Just who I am, and I don't regret it”) I feel like when we get this part of NF, we have to remember that it’s for a particular season in his life. With him going to therapy, his wife being big on mental and physical wellness, it’s fair to say that he’s not always in this headspace. And when he isn’t; when he’s happy and life is going well for him. He savours those moments to himself (he says “keep it to myself when I celebrate” line in The Search). I try not to make any conclusions about NF based songs like this one, I just try to keep an open mind and hope for the best.

    Love the reaction!
    I advise you to listen to the Interlude before this song.
    He wrote this song when he was in a really bad place mentally. As the Interlude says it was when he realized that everything he had dreamed of his entire life, everything he had worked on, had not made him happy. So he felt like since all of this didn't make him happy, then he could never be happy.
    It was the most depressed time in his life. He was having a mental breakdown.
    He was doing interviews, and then sound check, and then meet and greets, and then he was meeting people and then he was doing the show, and it was like "hey when can you do this?" "when can you do that?". He had so many people looking at the things he had created, and talking about it and giving opinions. He went from none of this to experiencing it every day. His anxiety had become terrible and he felt less passionate. He was just so hopeless that he felt he would feel better if he wasn't alive. And that's why he went to that therapy place for four days, to disconnect himself from the world, and that's where he started working on Nate. In fact, for the song Nate took inspiration from one of the exercises that made him do it in that place. For this exercise he had to imagine talking to the younger version of himself and then he had to imagine being his younger version and talking to the bigger one. And because of this that he began to see a therapist normally. And this was also the period when he was diagnosed with OCD.
    So, that's the backstory of the song.
    Nate said sometimes things have to get a lot worse before they can get better.
    I hope the best for him! I recommend you to watch this interview. It hasn't come out in full yet, but Nate seems happier in this interview, so if you wanna check it out!

    A couple thoughts you put into words really struck me in this reaction. Money is absolutely a tool. Yes, it is necessary to survive, but it's not everything. Make it work for you. Second, we are always being sold to in some way our another. The most effective sales pitch is the one you don't realize is happening. The last one was the idea of helping yourself first. It seems selfish to some. But, if you aren't in a good place mentally, spiritually, financially, or otherwise, then you won't be able to adequately help others.

    I think this song is linked to the Interlude he’s added to the album. And also, I’m quite shocked that you didn’t refer to any personification in this song. NF says that “these voices keep speaking to me” and a few other words and if you remember in intro 3, after burying fear, he said he will keep anger with him cause he will need him to “that song” and here he’s talking about not being able to find hope or peace and that could be frustrating and make him angry hence the demonic kind of voice when he says “I can’t have it” 🤷🏽‍♂️ just a thought I got from your reaction to the song. Never saw it that way before

    • @AltSpace
      @AltSpace  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I haven't listened to interlude yet, just debating whether to do this in my own time or make a video on it! Thank you for the indpeth insight, how you feeling about the upcoming mixtape?

    • @samluabeya9660

      @@AltSpace depending on you but I guess it’s best in your own time cause it’s not even a minute unless you feel like sharing what you think about what it says which might just be great! And as for the mixtape ? I’m on my toes for it! Super excited
      I met NF through a girl who I loved and was going through so much and she told me his music would have helped me get to know her better and more and I’ve been attached to NF since then cause besides the « dark and sad songs » his music still hits hard and I just can’t wait! Been excited since mansion and he’s never disappointed anyone so I guess the more excited you are, the more satisfying the mixtape will be

    Trauma. In my opinion, what you just listened to was trauma, or what goes on inside of the mind AND heart of someone who has gone, or is going through trauma. I know he has a song titled "Trauma" as well, but this is just a different way of basically conveying a similar message.

    On Spotify there's also a short track called interlude. It comes right before hate myself and kind of belongs to the song so you should listen to it. It's kinda interesting as well

  • @claytonweems4184

    If you haven’t already, you should go back and listen to Interlude. It’s just before Hate Myself on the album, and it gives some additional context and significance to Hate Myself (imo).

    Maybe if you hear interlude it will put you in the right context.
    Think about to how many people NF helped with his music.
    People feel like they are not alone when they hear him and it is OK to feel bad.
    For me literally changed my life.
    I will never forget him.
    This NF in my veins if you ... you know the rest ;)

    Outta the features on Nate's upcoming mixtape, are you most excited about the track 'Lost' with Hopsin, or the track 'Trust' with Tech N9ne? In the context of the two features, everyone knew that a collab with Hopsin was in the works, but I feel like Tech N9ne was so left field and unexpected. Either way, I'm looking forward to the mixtape. From the Clouds video/song, I seems as though Nate is a lot more confident and self aware of how under appreciated his talent is. Like he's more comfortable with showing some cockiness. It suits him, and so I hope we'll get more tracks like that on this mixtape
