One of my very favourite games ever is Freelancer. For 18 years nothing have topped it. One game came very close. That was the original Rebel Galaxy. I am beyond hyped for this game!
No, it didn't. Freespace 2 and Freelancer are still far above anything else. Rebel Galaxy didn't even have a proper 3D flight model with decent controls. That's as far from the established classics as you can get.
If you liked freelancer I would suggest to try the next games. Wing Commander Privateer (my favourite)(same lead dev as free lancer, Ed Maurer), Privateer 2, DarkStar One. As stated on another video, I will certainly be buying this one, I liked the original Rebel Galaxy, but the combat wasn't exactly what I like, this one looks exactly what I am searching for.
Same here, even though the first Rebel Galaxy didn't appeal to me that much. The space sim genre has been in a crisis since Freelancer. Just saying the 3 biggest titles in the genre are currently Star Citizen, Elite: Dangerous and No Man's Sky says a lot about how big of a crisis. I don't want to get my hopes too high but a part of me is also wishing this to be the next Freelancer.
I love everything about your game. The sound, the feel, the gameplay. I'm so happy that you've been able to tackle such an ambitious project. And by the way fantastic video.
Full ship painting in game?!?!??? Whaaaattt!!!! I am totally painting a picture of my IRL 18wheeler on the side of the ship and doing some space trucking!!!!
I need this ASAP. It’s basically everything I would put in a game if I could make one. Story with a unique, interesting protagonist. No signs of microtransactions or loot boxes. Shades of X-wing, Wing Commander/Privateer and maybe even some Star Control in the design and scope. And you keep throwing in more throughout the vid. "Oh by the way there’s also a full Photoshop-level 3D painting app for customization and you can order a 3D printed, painted model of your ship" WHAT. And this is a $30 game? Holy balls.
Fine. You win. You get my money. Is that what you wanted? ;) guys this totally changed my mind. The one thing that really turned me around was the auto pursuit because you are so right about the space jousting. Everything else was just delicious gravy. I cant help but think I'm gonna end up playing the minigames as much or more than the main game. More games really need mini games. Really good job. I cant wait. :)
Hey Travis, I enjoyed working with you in Rebel Galaxy during a few bug fixes. Your skill, speed, and enthusiasm is amazing. Thank you for Rebel Galaxy. I still play this game a lot.
This is so Privateer Origin is gonna sue somebody. I hope not. but man, from photon torps to IR missiles, automatic landing zones, the merch and mercs guild offices, the ship cockpit, everything says Privateer in 3d. e: And oh god they have Retros. They actually have Retros. 50 credit docking fee, just like privateer! the more i watch the more it looks like they took everything good right from Priv. Don't know if to feel good or mad at that. The first rebel galaxy was great cause it was it's own thing, but when the intro guy says 'we wanted to try things our own way' or whatever, and then the game looks like an updated rip of Privateer... I dunno man. I'm excited and conflicted.
Yep, privateer. And that is good, loved it, this game adds fresh paint and that with HOTAS support and Music featuring Blues Saraceno. This'll be awesome!
Oh god, the audio design! It's maybe not the most flashy and instantly noticeable thing but I just love the low hum of the engines that revs up when the speed increases, and especially the weapons which sound very physical and have a lot of impact. More like having some artillery mounted to the ship as opposed to a brightly flashing light that goes 'pew-pew!'
This is the space game we have waited years for. Day One purchase for me. Thank you for making this. And you are right - that auto pursuit mechanic, and making it optional...brilliant!
You just made my day . I was playing StarTrek online and was bored as hell . So i thought to myself ..maybe i should play Rebel Galaxy again for the 4-rth time or go back to Freelancer and give it one more go for old times sake . So i decided to check Rebel Galaxy and then the bomb dropped . I don't usually get exited over new games since the industry has gone downhill with loot boxes and microtransactions but , to be honest i can't wait to play this game . The first Rebel was amazing , pure joy and fun , this one is gonna be even better . Damn i'm actually exited for a new game...who knew )
Watching the one hour gameplay, I'm listening to the voice, the attitude and I couldn't help but think "damn. Is that the badass Aunt Juno from the first?!" I fecking LOVED the first for the feel and setting as much as the broadside combat. I don't mind combat changes (please do another in the future as well please) so I'm stoked for this! I MADE several family members buy the original and bought it on both xbox and ps4 (my preference). Just keep them coming guys.
Hey. You. Making the awesome space game (again). Thanks. Seriously. With the gaming landscape the way it is, a lot of us are really appreciative of smaller developers making solid, well made games. You keep making things with this level of polish and respect for your customers and we'll keep buying. Honestly, man...thanks for making this. This is the sort of stuff we need. There are too few space games out there and too few games not trying to drain your wallet with crap.
I concur with this statement and sentiment. Too few studios will take the risk and plunge into making a game like this for us. This will be a day one purchase for me.
I absolutely love both your games working towards a destroyer in Rebel Galaxy and will be picking up Outlaw tomorrow. You are an absolute legend my friend!
Love the vibe you are going for. Rebel Galaxy was great, the new pov, the decorations, the way you are travel between places in a station is really cool. Thanks a lot for keeping the same feeling :)
I need this game NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! So much freelancer vibes, already enjoyed the previous one quite a lot...but this...this is something else!! Thank you for the awesome job you guys are doing!!!
This is looking absolutely amazing! The sheer attention to detail as well as the overall game mechanics, style, feel, menus, atmosphere (or lack thereof)... all spot on! I'm really excited for it and would even be willing to pre-order if it's any help to the work you are all doing. And I say that as someone who *rarely* pre-orders. Loving the Firefly/Serenity vibe of cowboys in space. Futuristic games are cool, but there's something about this which is more charming. Great job on the walkthrough/demo too. Very well spoken, earnest, and calm. I feel like _Captain Malcolm Reynolds_ is telling me what's what.
Why did I only discover this now?? Have I been hiding under a rock? I absolutely loved Rebel Galaxy and played the hell out of it. This is just what I have been waiting for since. Oh boy. Here's to being hyped. PS. You guys definitely deserve succes.
I'm sold. Looks like you took inspiration from Privateer which I loved and played the heck out back in the day. All I need now is a possibility to create custom radio station to establish ♪Gemini Radio Station♫ which will play that awesome Privateer soundtrack by Nenad Vugrinec.
I absolutely love this video. I bought this game today based on this video. Thank you for showing me your game and explaining it so thoroughly. I can't wait to dive in. I have the original Rebel Galaxy and loved it, but I used a trainer to help me with some of the issues I had. Your stories are great, this reminds me of the old Wing Commander series that I loved as a younger man. Thanks again for a great game! (someone mentioned Freelancer, also a great game but I never finished it unlike the first Rebel Galaxy)
Purchased the first game on day one, and loved every hour of it. As such, I've been waiting for another Rebel Galaxy ever since, and let me just say that you've really nailed it with this one. The details are stunning, especially those cockpits (I could eat them, they're so delicious), not to mention the atmosphere. I'm totally sold, especially if it's as fun to play as it looks!
I do not agree with that, either. I mean Rebel Galaxy didn't even have 3D flight model ffs. Outlaw still seems very consolized. The standards for space sims were set by Freespace 2. Anything that doesn't uphold them does not interest me and RG:Outlaw won't uphold them.
I love that you are keeping an eye to accessibility without compromising on the gameplay (how many were bummed that X-wing Alliance straight up refused to load without a joystick plugged in? Not a problem for me personally but damn if that was a short-sighted choice), there are so many gameplay features that weren't in the original Privateer even if the control scheme fits into a pad. And finally someone noticed that with modern 3D engines you could get away with the colorful Wing Commander/Privateer art style without the downside of sprites scaling in weird ways and in general screwing with your sense of perspective and distance. Also GTA-style radio stations in an open world spacesim: it's one of these things you don't know you need until you see them.
As much as i like games like "Elite: Dangerous" or the (overambitious?) "Star Citizen" for their approach to modern space games. This looks far more promising if you craved for a new "Freelancer" like game since freakin 2003.
"Who are you that flies so good?..Are you insane!?!" "No...it's just got a load of cargo in the hold, and a lot of bills to pay at home." :). Seriously Double Damage, this looks amazing, and the Privateer vibe is really cool. I can't wait to try the game for myself.
Love the 1990's Privateer look and feel it was one of my all time favorite games! Rebel Galaxy was a fun game but this is more my cup-o-tea. So glad I found out about this today!
honestly I love this, but the menu.. I would honestly like to see some kind of UI element when you're dealing with your ship parts, as it's confusing when you have just text to tell you what you've installed, what you're buying, what you're swapping.. Perhaps even just a couple columns that stipulate (visually mind you) whether a component is installed, sitting in inventory, being purchased, being sold. Even just a simple topdown style layout of your ship, showing components in various locations or something? Hell I'd be fine with vertical lists. But the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom is just too confusing. This also goes for the missions. It kind of feels like they're all just shoved down to the bottom of your screen for no reason, and this makes them rather difficult to read out and separate. Just my opinion though.. Maybe I'm just too used to vertical lists, rather than building everything horizontally.
Now THIS is a game! And compared to the competition, this one is genuinely nice to just watch someone play. It just seems so much more professional to see the complete, finished package all come together for once. Thank you for all your hard work in creating this game! I can't wait to play it. 21 hours of radio? I'll certainly be playing this for a lot longer than that! EDIT: I'm sorry. That was my reaction BEFORE "fully simulated 8-Ball" and... that custom paintjob feature. OMG. I think I love you guys.
i thank you for including me in the video joking aside: if RG Outlaw what realease today i would buy it instantly... looks absolutely amazing.... i wish a game like this would come out now during the holidays..
There is a strong freespace/xwing/wing commander of old vibe here. You managed to keep the stellar audio design and graphical style of your first game and capture what made these old classics great. I'm in love. There was even a capital ship that showed up at some point of the video. I really hope that the story mode will give us those big 'army vs army' star warsian battles. Also, kudos for the super smooth comments along the video. Great work.
The first game that i ever played about spaceships was Tachion, a few weeks ago i downloaded the first rebel galaxy by the epic store ofert, now, i know that im going to buy this game when i can, great job guys, you did a wonderful memory of mine come back, love you!!
this game is not rebel galaxy. it shares almost nothing with the first game. do not buy it. it is in beta and it a trash heap. the controls are garbage, the menu ui is terrible and outdated. hard pass
Is there an option to disable the cinematic camera during jumps? I kinda liked the warp jumps in the first one (or in any game like that, really). Its just that IMO that kinda takes you out of the experience, breaks the immersion a bit (especially when you're playing in first person). Apart from that little 'issue', this could very well be a first day purchase for me :)
I feel the same. The warps in RG are awsome and really makes the space experience whole. The first thing i noticed in Outlaw i dont really like is this cinematic, fast travel like warping in a system. I dont feel the scale of the system, no cool highspeed traversing next to planets and suns. This feels way more boring.
I absolutely love what you've got here so far. The Privateer/Freelancer feel and retro-futuristic cockpits and everything just, it's beautiful! I'm most definitely looking to get this one. Hopefully you'll have enough different ships to fly and try out though.
I actually really liked the 'naval' aspect of rebel galaxy. Not many games at all do that anymore. Let you command a capital ship. Heck even X Rebirth screwed that up and cut it out. While I'm glad you are making more games as I really enjoyed the vibe and the story in Rebel Galaxy was interesting enough space fighters has just been done to death for me and I'm not sure it will be my cup of tea. But keep on being creative, will be nice to see your future titles.
Losing the ability to pilot larger ships is kind of a shame, but being limited to the 2d plane was... limiting. More than a few times I couldn't shoot at fighters because they were above/below me and I didn't have any turrets there. Quite frustrating. There is always the possibility that they'll add in larger freighters to the game though.
@@LordVader1094 To be fair, as he stated in the announce trailer making fun of Star Citizen and how Elite Dangerous turned out, there really aren't. Star Citizen is barely a thing that exists, and Elite is more... numbers based exploration? It's not the same at all really.
Big time Privateer and Freelancer player here...been waiting for something to come close to those games....finally it looks like it's here. Looks fantastic.
Too cool. I like the features like the paint job editor for the ship and the screenshot/film mode. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for this title.
Last comment for now. If this is what space trucking is like in the future then I am ALL IN! so far it looks better than I thought it would and I will be buying this game for sure!
I appreciate the vibrant colors and soft atmospheric visual effects. Give the world a lively feel to it. I can't wait to get my hands on it and max it out on my gaming Rig.! Please optimise for us Mega Rig Builders! Wishing you success....!
Looking absolutely incredible. I'm in agreement with some others that this looks already like it's going to be an absolute steal at a $30 price point, and would be interested in ways to show further support of your team. In a world where so many of the major players seem far more interested in maximizing profits than in actually providing a great product, you guys are a breath of fresh air.
Privateer was literally the first computer game I ever bought, in a dual set with Strike Commander. Absolutely legendary, I still play the GOG version. Rebel Galaxy definitely had a similar vibe (besides the combat), so I can't wait for this new Outlaw approach.
Nacogdoches in the Texas system. THAT is awesome, man. I go there regularly to visit one of my sites for work. Weird hearing a place I'm so close to. XD Cheers!
Congrats on this gem i can tell you all at double damage put lots of love into this new game. i cant wait to get my hands on this keep up the great vids!
With the game using mostly small ships it leaves one major question. How will the Rasputin factor in? After all, it was owned by Juno. Also hope we meet some of the characters from the first game who were former associates of Juno (Orzo and Sandar for example).
I cherish the day I found the little gem called Rebel galaxy on steam. I loved the gameplay, the story and boy did I adore this soundtrack (lot's of it's songs are still on my daily playlists). I can't tell you how excited I am that it is getting a successor/predecessor. I just hope that the garbage can that is my PC can still run it.
As an old school gamer that plays games on hardest difficulty for the most part and hates easy games. I like the idea of "Auto Pursuit" as it fits the realism and expected tech. You figure a ship of that time would have a feature as such. Now....Can you upgrade it?? That would be cool. Looking forward to this!
Can't wait for this one. Reminds me of Freelancer. As somebody said earlier, Freelancer really hasn't been beaten for it's type. This is going to be the long awaited new Freelancer for me.
The game looks like a lot of fun! Love the style of the ships, characters and the music. It's good to see more features, it really helps to flesh out the world. Now I need to reinstall Rebel Galaxy. I got the urge to play it again, for some reason...
What a really well designed space sim! I will surely buy it! The only thing that I would probably miss is the possibility of creating your own character, to get a little more immersion. I'm on the hype, fellas! Good job!
I wonder if you can choose to travel the long distances and not just cut scenes. Not that I really enjoy the boring travels but it does put into perspective how big the universe (you are in, in the game, really is) I see the autopilot icon being pressed when traversing :)
You could fly there, but it would take a loooong time. And I think the continuity of the space becomes pretty apparent as you play because some things ARE near each other and you'll fly between them. It doesn't feel like skyboxes.
Also I guess it will be like in the first Privateer, basically you can use autopilot when safe but if you are getting away from pursuers you'll need to fly manually to get to a safe place.
Wasn't that interested in this game (tired of space genre) BUT after watching your sincere video and seeing clearly how the game is a labor of love for your team, you sold me. I was so impressed with what I saw, I went ahead and bought your original game. Good luck to you and your team. Can't wait to play your latest when it's released. BTW putting in a nod to "the last starfighter" in your minigame is just too damn cool!
Game looks awesome! I haven't played a bunch of Rebel Galaxy however I enjoyed what I did play and this appears to expand and add on everything I may have wanted in the original - Addition of mini-games, a deeper focus on characters, dialogue and story imo will take Rebel Galaxy to that next level, er, far flung galaxy. I know many enjoyed the naval combat of RB, however, personally I'm more a fan of the cock-pit/fighter style Outlaw is going for. This game reminds me of Firefly in many ways, now, if only we had a crew ;-) Maybe after Outlaw? Best of luck, I cannot wait to play the game when it releases.
Holy shit I'm somewhat excited... Getting Wing Commander / Freespace vibes in addition to all the rest. Wish you guys all the best man, can't wait for the game!
Bravo this looks AMAZING! If you're not already planning it or I didn't miss it a suggestion on the ship loadout screen, a way to see how much power all the various systems will be pulling on the reactor. Shields, weapons, engines, etc and an easy way to compare the installed equipment with what you want to replace it with. Elite Dangerous does this quite well. I'll be buying this as soon as it hits Steam. Cheers all and again, amazing looking game.

I can't wait to play it. 21 hours of radio? I'll certainly be playing this for a lot longer than that!
EDIT: I'm sorry. That was my reaction BEFORE "fully simulated 8-Ball" and... that custom paintjob feature. OMG. I think I love you guys.
i thank you for including me in the video
joking aside: if RG Outlaw what realease today i would buy it instantly... looks absolutely amazing.... i wish a game like this would come out now during the holidays..
Great work.
I am SO HAPPY that is the Aunt! I played so much RG thinking about my bad-arse aunt and all her adventures.
This, the cinematic camera seems to kill the pacing.
The first games warp was so cinematic already. Especially if you were in the map and it zoomed back in.
unless you got near an asteroid
Pretty sure he said early on that you can skip the cinematic but he likes to let them play because they're cool, which they are imo
@@JZStudiosonline I personally quite liked being limited to a 2D plane. It made the game stand out from all the rest to me.
Wait wait wait... what other 'space fighter' games even are there?
@@warmlycalculated390 Are you not aware of the genre?
@@LordVader1094 To be fair, as he stated in the announce trailer making fun of Star Citizen and how Elite Dangerous turned out, there really aren't. Star Citizen is barely a thing that exists, and Elite is more... numbers based exploration? It's not the same at all really.
Absolutely LOVE this game - thank you - it's the dream successor to Privateer I always wanted!
Looks like this is going to be great fun. Only a few days to go,, I can;t wait
Big time Privateer and Freelancer player here...been waiting for something to come close to those games....finally it looks like it's here. Looks fantastic.
I loved this game, such a great gameplay demonstration, now i need this! XD
Too cool. I like the features like the paint job editor for the ship and the screenshot/film mode. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for this title.
Last comment for now. If this is what space trucking is like in the future then I am ALL IN! so far it looks better than I thought it would and I will be buying this game for sure!
Cant wait for this! I love that it is single player only, offline, and arcade style.
I love the soundtrack where your kitting out your little pirate ship at around 28 minutes in.
I'm loving what I am seeing here, cheers for the sneak peek Travis and co :-)
I appreciate the vibrant colors and soft atmospheric visual effects. Give the world a lively feel to it. I can't wait to get my hands on it and max it out on my gaming Rig.! Please optimise for us Mega Rig Builders! Wishing you success....!
As someone who doesn't usually seek out flight games, I am excited as hell for this! Loved the first game, can't wait for the prequel :D
OMG... you are the Casey Kasem of Space Sim developers! Great voice and you really know how to use it! Great storyteller!
This needs more attention. It’s a sin that it’s not blowing up.
Privateer was literally the first computer game I ever bought, in a dual set with Strike Commander. Absolutely legendary, I still play the GOG version. Rebel Galaxy definitely had a similar vibe (besides the combat), so I can't wait for this new Outlaw approach.
“If you get the high score it will open up a mission a’la The Last Starfighter” love it. I was like 8 when that came out. Blew my mind.
Nacogdoches in the Texas system. THAT is awesome, man. I go there regularly to visit one of my sites for work. Weird hearing a place I'm so close to. XD Cheers!
I just found this to day. YEEEEESSSSSSS. I will take weeks off of work for this.
Congrats on this gem i can tell you all at double damage put lots of love into this new game. i cant wait to get my hands on this keep up the great vids!
Huge bonus - Looks like it doesn’t have the same floaty / “ship hanging on the end of a rope” physics as SC.
Totally reminds me on the 22 year old game "Schleichfahrt" (Blue Byte) :D loved it, I might try this one
With the game using mostly small ships it leaves one major question. How will the Rasputin factor in? After all, it was owned by Juno.
Also hope we meet some of the characters from the first game who were former associates of Juno (Orzo and Sandar for example).
Agree, i personaly dont know, i would prefer back to big ships
Wow this looks so good, I loved the Rebel Galaxy cannot wait for this!
I loved the gameplay showing. Looking forward to release.
looks interesting, will keep an eye on it, specially love the music and the space radio thing ;)
This looks like Elite Dangerous on a chill pill - I'm sold!!!
Runs smooth asf. I love it! And it's a worthy Colony Wars successor.
That ship painting doh! :D Cant wait for this!
hope you list it on steam so i can book mark it for buying when its out... looking kinda fun. Great Job RG.
So cool. Wish we could walk around the stations but it's still visually better than sifting through menus in ED, even if they're functionally the same
What a really well designed space sim! I will surely buy it! The only thing that I would probably miss is the possibility of creating your own character, to get a little more immersion. I'm on the hype, fellas! Good job!
Love Rebel Galaxy. The soundtrack is superb.
Think the option for you to "fast travel" to the mission point appears in the top right corner.
I just wana know if there are gona be big ships for me to pilot or just the fighter freighter tipe?
This looks like a mighty fine game! Looking forward to getting my hands on it.
I'm hyped!
I loved Freelancer and this throws me back to the good old times, i'm sure it will be a great game!
Awesome game, looking foward to playing it soon. Keep on, guys:)
Privateer reborn.
Anyone catch that your "PDA" uses the same font as the Commodore Amiga logo? Retro indeed.
omg that lighting is awesome, looks amazing,
Game looks awesome!
If I could wish for one more thing, it would be the possibility to do coop mission with 2-3 players :)
Yeah, that one isn't happen. The developer stated he never wants to do MP ever again.
Found this because of cradle audiobook. Took too long to figure out why I recognized your voice!
Freelancer is coming back baby! WOOOT! Love everything about it!
LOL... 39:43 "We may have gone a slight bit overboard"... Ya think? This game looks amazing. Will be buying it day 0.
This brings back so many galaxy on fire 2 memories :')
That's game looks amazing! Like a true labour of love. Great job, devs! Keep going, please.
@RebelGalaxy Will it still be possible to jump into bigger ships like Dreadnoughts?
Is this going to be permanently exclusive to the EPIC store? Would love to play but I'm never going to touch that store :/
