My dad was super controlling over the thermostat and I was always miserable in the summer, sweating and getting sick from the heat. I vowed I would NEVER be that uncomfortable in my own home once I was an adult and paying the bills. I've kept that promise to myself and no matter what, my comfort is one thing I refuse to compromise on. I'm not wearing a coat in the house during winter time and I refuse to be sweating and miserable in the summer.

It was probably more to do with being poor than controlling. Heating or cooling the house costs money, I bet your dad felt bad deep down that he couldn’t maintain the costs comfortably.

@@DavidYates-x8d I didn't mean that I thought he wanted to be psychologically controlling. I mean he was literally controlling the thermostat. Yes, he was being cheap and wanted to save money.

I'm like the wife on this call but I've had to ask myself- how much would this actually save us? Even if it was $500 through the winter, it wouldn't make a huge dent in their debt. Heat the house.

Our thermostat is at 72. I let it get down to 64 in the house before I turned the heat on.

There has been shown to be a correlation between the warmth of your home and clinical depression. If you can afford it, keep the thermostat turned up to a reasonable level.

I lived without heat for about three weeks due to bad planning by a landlord. Heat is an absolute necessity.

Maybe he just has some swelling that increases when the heats on and when it makes the air more dry. Some people have that in high air conditioning too.

Turning the heat off while living in Boston is not good. Plus making 150k a year, the pipes will freeze and burst to boot.

If you turn your heat down too low you will not save money if you are setting it low and cranking it back up daily. Everything in the house to the drywall gets to that cold temp and it takes a ton of energy to warm that up. Set it back a few degrees only. If you're going to be gone for week that's different. But daily? No, it doesn't help and may make it worse. If you have a heat pump definitely do not let it get too cold.

I thought he was being whiny till she said the temperature. I keep it at 68 during the day in the winter, 63 at night. My family complains about it, but I hate having to do a wardrobe change every time I go in or out of the house. If I'm wearing a sweater outside, I don't want to change into shorts and a t-shirt when I come inside. Same thing in the summer. I want to wear shorts outside and not have to switch into sweats when I come inside.

I make my family dress warm and turn the heat down. We will not dress in shorts and tanks in the winter! It's to hot! We use pj's and blankets and turn it down at night too. And turn it off if we are away from home.
