Totally Agree with your opening summary about suspension and power. I ride only off road and get lots of elevation changes on every ride( usually several thousand feet). The stock fork sucked and would pack up on chattery stuff until there was no suspension left and then just slam me to a stop. Fox 40's were a huge improvement. I'm also running an 18" x 3.5" rear wheel which was another game changer. Tomorrow I'm installing an Emoto Bros BAC 4000 controller and bypass kit. Hopefully no more lugging the end of long climbs. Bring on the 7 kw!
While a game changer for the masses, more aggressive riders are going full Fox suspension, custom wheelsets(I use a super aggressive 21" front/16"rear),solid mount bars and peg extenders and support strut. I also use the EMoto Bros controller/bypass kit. It's bluetooth so you can change dozens of parameters with an Android device for different racing types. I'm setup for CO Hare Scrambles, have 8k in it and this old mtb DHer couldn't be happier.
rode sur ron 200 km on concrete parking lot just 50 feet behind houses complex - no one even knew i was there - supermoto wheel set - i have 6 supermoto MC and have never been able to ride on concrete for more than a minute - it’s surprising how Good the grip on ruff ish concrete is even with stock sm tires -
I have one of these and have $1000 +worth of upgrades on it and haven't even done a battery ($1700) or controller ($900) upgrade. These things need a lot of work and are expensive. I did a Manitou Dorado front fork swap but in reality....the thing needs a CR85 or a YZ85 front fork. The front end flexes like a rubber band with the Manitou. If you're going to upgrade to a 21inch front wheel and real dirt rubber you are going to be stressing the hell out of the flimsy downhill mtb forks.

What is making it a really attractive option to me is the aftermarket options. I’m keeping an eye out for parts on sale. If I can get a good condition frame/motor, the rest of the parts are easily sourced (cheaper) from the people doing upgrades and don’t want their used batteries/controllers/forks/wheels. Horrible time to purchase one right now but if they drop back down by May I’ll probably be unable to resist a purchase.
imo the wheels are the only stock thing worth purchasing. The stock controller is sluggish and the forks are crap. Esp when a BAC4000 is only $800. If you're gonna use it as a street bike only the stock suspension is fine though. I imagine finding a frame and motor might be hard, I can't imagine why a non-retailer would have one around. Maybe a frame, since people are poaching the motors for go-karts
@@sagesends I was also thinking about what alternative parts would fit. Might be able to find the motor and frame by a different name in China. This is just going to be a trail bike (I live in a cabin in the woods) and something to tool around on occasionally.
hmm, well for small stuff the DNM and fastace forks are okay, especially if you add oil to the DNMs (they come with no fork oil). The RST killah forks should be avoided at all costs, they're awful. But yeah I think if you can find one for a good deal and ship it you might be okay. I think you could get away with shipping it through Bike flights, in which case it would only be $200 or so
I’m stressing on getting the pedal kit or not. So much plausible deniability there still. My e-mtb easily hits 35 with a few modifications but I’ve never had a cop look twice. This thing would really be pushing what they will tolerate around here lol.

@@RandomVidz9_ This is a copy paste from Luna Cycles website; IMPORTANT NOTE: These bikes are shipped limited to lower speed/power to make them road legal in most states (in road legal mode this bike also has over 40 miles of range), a 5 minute modification will take all limits off the bike to make it power and speed unlimited and illegal for road use in most states. (Some users report success working with Dirt Legal to get their bikes plated for road use at full power. Please note if you ride on the road it is at your own risk) I would look up the e-bike laws in the state that you live in just to double check.
Just a comment on the linkage... While I can't see what you see in the video, the upper arm, which you say 'looks too thin' may be too thin or it may not be -- here's why. The upper link arm is in tension which is less of a problem than links in compression because they need to be able to deal with buckling issues that don't really exist with arms in tension. Not saying you're wrong, again, you can see what I can't, but I just wanted to explain the difference in engineering terms between items in compression and items under tension. Have a look at this wikipedia article about truss bridges -- it explains the difference between tension and compression and how that affects the size (diameter, thickness, etc). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truss_bridge
Yeah I understand, I think the main issue is a heavy bottom out will put a lot of stress on that link, esp since the suspension is somewhat undersprung. That link is the only part ive seen break on these bikes (although to be fair when I made this video I had not seen one broken yet).
@@sagesends -- Oh, has there been documented cases of it breaking, that would certainly increase the chance the component is under-designed? That does happen, particularly in something like F1 where every gram matters and the engineer things as close to the point of failure possible to reduce mass, but they shouldn't be quite so aggressive in weight reduction for an e-bike.
You can go with a Talaria sting. Slightly larger, slightly more expensive , slightly more power, slightly more weight. All that togeather equals about the same performance as the Sur on. One last bad thing, you have to deal with gearbox oil/ posibly changing etc, but it might be a little more robust then the Sur on. I have the Sur on @ 200lb and its ok stock, with a few upgrades wouldn't even be a issure even with your 220 weight. Best of luck, -Cheers

fat riders on ebikes do more damage to my local mountain bike trails than any other entity and it's pretty clear they're not out there digging while we're all busting ass maintaining trails (nobody gets paid to maintain em). So, apologies if I'm not being mindful of their feelings, but it sucks working hard to make a trail ride good, then working hard to ride up the climb trail, just to see some dude who is not putting in the work blasting past you just to ride that trail twice as many times as you get to. I ride fire roads, ohv trails, and hard packed jumps, but I don't take the sur ron on any of the mtb trails out of respect for myself and others who put in so much work maintaining trails. hope you can understand where I am coming from. cheers.

ridden and raced mtb for over 20 years, folk bitching about a bike ripping up trails are clearly wank riders and in my opinion you want trails torn up as that is what makes them technical and tough, if you want smooth then i suggest mtb is not for you, this said, suron or whatever should be no issue on a mtb trail to users - get a grip and stop moaning.

it's TH-cam. 75% of people seem to prefer it. Many people hate it, which I understand.
My dogs Name is Sage. any how I want one Just to broke but if I was patient I ran into some money but already spent most of it On Building up my Hardtail Frame My Gf got me a chromag stylus. oh well maybe a sur ron will Just make me Fatter. btw some good Points you made I have yet to see one in person But I was wondering why they Made that Linkage so thin.
the only other sage I've know what's a golden retriever so that's cool. and yeah I'd take my mountain bike over the surron any day
@@sagesends lol Nice Iv always Liked The Name. we are in SoCal have a Lot of white Sage growing in the hills and He is a white Husky my Gf wanted to call him white Sage lol I was Like how about Just Sage.. and Yeah Man Bikes are the Best! my gf Has a Mid drive kit on one of her Bikes Its fun and all but Just so heavy Nothing Like the Feeling of a Light and Nimbleness of a Good ol Bike + Gravity..
@@mountaingoat8788 nothing can replace the feeling of control over a bike. So easy to make them do what you want. the surron is fun for high speed stuff but anything technical I'd rather be on my bike
@@sagesends I might agree with you back in my youth but now I'm 53 and I'll take a throttle any day LOL
Yo what's the name of the intro song? I love it.
it's from artist Mondo Loops. Not sure which one but he makes a lot of good stuff with a similar sound
Do u have to cut the green wire to make it go faster on the battery??
yeah ofc
You don't have to do that on the new models
Song?
it's a loop by Mondo Loops
How fast this thing go bro you were zipping
bout 45 miles an hour
@@sagesends how long does it last with you ripping it around like not doing a hyper mile..lol but going hard??
Also love your vids bro I got the meepo v3 and that’s how I found ya! Keep it up bro!
like 20 miles if your ripping, 40 if your being conservative
You can upgrade the power and it's said to do 80 miles per hour but it will cost you about 2 Grand
I've heard the stock suspension is horrible for any type of real off roading. True?
not great, but not awful
I really offroad my surron and the suspensions are totally fine for most of the riders, if you're more experienced you want to look into upgrading the rear shock, and the front forks, but honestly it's more than capable for 80% of the riders
@@JulienBrami Good to know. Thanks
anyone know the song?
which one?
kaha milega sir Pey Kitana he

if you plan on jumping it theres a small poll your suppose to put in between the pegs to stop them from bending in words but for the life of me i dont remember what it was called are were that one youtuber got it
yee I haven't had that issue lol
@@sagesends really? that's good to hear
theyve bent a bit from me lowsiding the bike but if your landing hard enough to bend the peg mounts your ankle health is gonna be a bigger issue
@@sagesends not really I've bent and snapped the other side bicycle peddle bars landing on them while they were horizontal, with no issue to my ankles. Many people just say over time and jumping the part the pegs attached to start to bend as there's no support but there's a part on Luna's web site you can get to brace them
AWESOME
background song?
not sure the exact one, but the artist is Mondo loops, he does a lotta guitar improv and it's all very good
Congress is proposing an e-bike tax credit act. The Act, according to Congressman Panetta's public press release, would create a 30 per cent consumer tax credit for anyone purchasing an electric bike - with overall cost capped at $8,000. I wonder if the Sur Ron qualifies?
probably not since it's not street legal
@@sagesends I’m pretty sure they come road legal. They only become illegal when you cut the wire to remove the limiter.
@@D.C.. frs? Then Ima buy a surron cuz I don’t want to get in trouble lol
@@RandomVidz9_ This is a copy paste from Luna Cycles website;
IMPORTANT NOTE: These bikes are shipped limited to lower speed/power to make them road legal in most states (in road legal mode this bike also has over 40 miles of range), a 5 minute modification will take all limits off the bike to make it power and speed unlimited and illegal for road use in most states. (Some users report success working with Dirt Legal to get their bikes plated for road use at full power. Please note if you ride on the road it is at your own risk)
I would look up the e-bike laws in the state that you live in just to double check.
ride surron on street in slow mode - death wish
I saw one snap in person, but online I've only seen the middle rocker link broken. It is possible both were poor casts, as it is super rare
can you send me a link for a $1500 used 450 dirt bike? lol
yeah but it might need a top end rebuild 😂
@@sagesends ya thats cheap. I just bought another 250r 2006 for $4700, these are not cheap
i want one but im kind a bigger guy. 6ft 220lbs :(
with risers and a seat extender it will still be comfortable, albeit small.
Stiffin the shocks and get a sadle lift.
Sick! I lived in Santa Cruz for 6 years, had a 125 motoped and would take it everywhere...only really got yelled at once and when stopped by ucsc cops I told them it was a 70cc, blatant lie lol but I still had functional pedals. I don't get how you guys don't get messed with or automatically classified as an e motorcycle because you have no crank arms??
I upgraded to hope v3 and a man. 140 yx, then About 8 months ago my motoped got stolen out of my dad's communal garage down in Dana point, butt hurt ever since.
Lol I'd always hit those jumps by Safeway too. There's some solid ones over by Capitola off east cliff
yeah I know the ones. The safeway ones suck these days, they used to be much bigger. The surron gets a pass cause it's quiet, nobody cares if there's no pedals
I think you need the 72v 17kw upgrade lol. Then it becomes a dirt bike.
if I had 2 grand to spare I'd be down

I’m torn on aerial Ryder grizzly and this lol
the grizzly might be better for the street but if your planning to do anything remotely off-road the sur Ron will be significantly more capable
@@sagesends they advertise the grizzly for off road too that has 1000watt dual motor (one I’m looking at) full motorcycle suspension. I’m looking for it to do both, upgrades too are swaying factor

You say Santa Cruz, but that looks like Aptos.
aight lol. must not know where I live
200 isn't a fat dude. Just a grown man and not a teenage size boy.
I am 22, but yes 200 not fat usually just tall.
I get what you mean just. Word it better next time more thoughtful. Sure some larger/heavier dudes watch your channel. Just saying fat riders on e bikes just comes off a bit offensive. Take it's easy and safe riding!
fat riders on ebikes do more damage to my local mountain bike trails than any other entity and it's pretty clear they're not out there digging while we're all busting ass maintaining trails (nobody gets paid to maintain em). So, apologies if I'm not being mindful of their feelings, but it sucks working hard to make a trail ride good, then working hard to ride up the climb trail, just to see some dude who is not putting in the work blasting past you just to ride that trail twice as many times as you get to. I ride fire roads, ohv trails, and hard packed jumps, but I don't take the sur ron on any of the mtb trails out of respect for myself and others who put in so much work maintaining trails.
hope you can understand where I am coming from. cheers.
If modifying these bikes like with bigger mx wheels you will lose power due to xtra weight remember.
with the BAC4000 that is no problem
You will gain more than you will lose
3600 is cheap af dam
👍 Best hands on, feet on, drive on, whatever you want to fucking call it!!!
Very good vid, bro!
I personally would appreciate a vid from you on the best of the best upgrades to install on the bike?
Like you said earlier, China or not?
They all come from China!
🤙 Thanks again!!!
Aloha!!! 🍻
ridden and raced mtb for over 20 years, folk bitching about a bike ripping up trails are clearly wank riders and in my opinion you want trails torn up as that is what makes them technical and tough, if you want smooth then i suggest mtb is not for you, this said, suron or whatever should be no issue on a mtb trail to users - get a grip and stop moaning.
yee idk if the trails are legal and professionally maintained it's fine but if people are putting in work digging trails with no pay and you got and rip a fat rut in them that would be considered a dick move
